In a safeguarding context, advocacy helps ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of the child, with their experiences, wishes, and feelings at the centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is advocacy?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NnOk2tTz468?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Scotland, advocacy is closely aligned with the principles of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/policies\/girfec\/\">Getting it Right for Every Child<\/a> and the rights outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org.uk\/what-we-do\/un-convention-child-rights\/\">United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child<\/a>, particularly the right of children to express their views in matters affecting them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Advocacy Looks Like in Practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Education staff play an important role in promoting and enabling advocacy by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Listening carefully and taking children\u2019s views seriously<\/li>\n<li>Creating safe, trusting environments where young people feel able to speak<\/li>\n<li>Supporting children to understand their rights and options<\/li>\n<li>Helping them communicate their views to others (e.g. social work, meetings, hearings)<\/li>\n<li>Recognising when an independent advocate may be needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some children, particularly those who are care experienced, involved in child protection processes, or facing complex circumstances., may require independent advocacy services to ensure their voice is not overshadowed by adults or systems.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Identifying When Advocacy Is Needed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A child may benefit from advocacy where:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They struggle to express their views or feel unheard<\/li>\n<li>There are significant decisions being made about their care or wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>There is conflict between what adults think is best and what the child wants<\/li>\n<li>They are involved in formal processes (e.g. child protection meetings, hearings)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responding and Taking Action<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you believe a child would benefit from advocacy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss this with your Child Protection Coordinator or Named Person<\/li>\n<li>Follow local authority procedures for referral to advocacy service &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/glowscotland.sharepoint.com\/:f:\/r\/sites\/dumfriesandgallowaycouncil\/D%26GCouncil\/DG%20GIRFEC\/Advocacy%20Service?csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=n2goEb\">Advocacy Service<\/a> (<em>requires GLOW Login<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Continue to support the child\u2019s participation and understanding throughout<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Advocacy is not about speaking for a child, it is about ensuring they are supported to speak for themselves.
