{"id":228,"date":"2025-06-23T14:25:31","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T13:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/educationalvisitors\/?page_id=228"},"modified":"2025-08-28T12:12:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:12:20","slug":"complex-additional-needs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/educationalvisitors\/complex-additional-needs\/","title":{"rendered":"Complex Additional Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Complex Additional Needs<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do we mean when we say, &#8220;complex additional needs&#8221;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"_N2QiuYMkmdsb4o\"><strong>Complex: <\/strong>Children who have complicated health and care needs due to <strong>multiple<\/strong> learning disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"_YrMCLij9uQZvO0\">A combination of, for example: sight loss, hearing loss, significant speech delay, non-verbal communication, requiring assistance to move, significant developmental delay (2 or more years).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"_zFSepVKJ4TAVbT\"><strong>Moderate: <\/strong>Children who have social, emotional and cognitive needs (but less likely to have significant and ongoing medical needs), due to profound and multiple learning disabilities.&nbsp;This may present as significant challenges in meeting&nbsp;milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"_vd6sqAA9Otd4H5\">A combination of, for example: neurodiversity, significant speech delay, non-verbal communication, significant developmental delay (2 or more years).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supporting Play<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learning through play, and opportunities for play, are essential for all children. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children with complex additional support needs may face challenges in developing play skills due to physical and\/or learning differences, and the environments they live in. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adults need to seek out and respond to any playfulness the learner shows, introducing simple structure and modelling interaction and sustained engagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ideas for Supporting Play<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sensory play<\/strong> \u2013 Stories, bubbles, water, sand, foam, gloop etc.\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Music<\/strong> \u2013 simple repetitive action songs such as twinkle twinkle, row your boat, etc. Exploring instruments&nbsp;and sound e.g., drums, everyday items such as pots and pans. \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Movement \u2013 <\/strong>parachute, trampoline, swings, spinning chairs. \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Art <\/strong>\u2013 using hands\/feet \/ body parts to make marks, different textures. \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cause and effect toys<\/strong> \u2013 e.g., musical, spinning, light up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Planning &amp;
