{"id":194,"date":"2025-02-06T09:22:27","date_gmt":"2025-02-06T09:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/dgschoolsconnect\/?page_id=194"},"modified":"2025-03-10T15:07:21","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T15:07:21","slug":"advanced-higher-mathematics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/dgschoolsconnect\/?page_id=194","title":{"rendered":"Advanced Higher Mathematics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advanced Higher Mathematics<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mathematics at Advanced Higher provides the foundation for many developments in the sciences and in technology as well as having its own intrinsic value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pupils studying Advanced Higher Maths will develop the following skills:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>select and apply complex mathematical techniques in a variety of mathematical situations, both practical and abstract<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>extend and apply skills in problem solving and logical thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>extending skills in interpreting, analysing, communicating and managing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>information in mathematical form, while exploring more advanced techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clarify their thinking through the process of rigorous proof<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Units of study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This qualification is made up of three units of work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Methods of Algebra and Calculus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications of Algebra and Calculus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geometry, Proofs and Systems of Equations<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assessment methods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The exam consists of 2 papers; a 1-hour non-calculator paper and a 2 hour 30 minute calculator paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Entry requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Higher Mathematics grade A or B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The course develops and expands a range of mathematical skills. It allows the learner to develop further skills in calculus and algebra. Areas such as number theory (which helps keep the internet secure), complex numbers (the uses of which are ubiquitous, ranging from the solution of equations to the description of electronic circuits) and matrices (used in game theory and economics) are introduced.
