School Improvement
Improvement planning and priorities
Each year the school will publish a School Improvement Plan which outlines the key priorities for the school during the year ahead, following engagement with staff, pupils and parents. The plan indicates the expected impact of priorities on pupil learning, as well as providing brief information about the key tasks to be taken forward. Both the report and the plan are published on the school’s website and are also available in hard copy, on request. A copy can also be found by searching for your school at Schools – Dumfries and Galloway Council.
All staff, pupils, parents and partners should be involved in improving the life and work of the school. A School Improvement Plan is written by the Headteacher and staff but should reflect a range of stakeholders who take lead roles in aspects of school improvement. The Parent Council plays a key role in this, and Parent Councils should have arrangements in place for gathering the views of parents.
It is important to acknowledge that the gathering of views is significant to creating a strong sense of school community that will help to inform decision making.
However ultimately decisions will be made by the Headteacher who has the responsibility for:
- Staffing and how best to allocate resources.
- Curriculum design and how best to deliver this to meet the needs of learners.
- Classroom organisation and timetabling to support individual needs as part of the whole school ethos.
The Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team of the school are best placed to deliver the necessary support and provide appropriate communication to key stakeholders regarding the application and impact of Council policy, improvement planning and the school priorities, so we would always encourage parents and carers to engage with their school in the first instance.
