Nursery celebrate Book Week Scotland

Mrs Banner, the school librarian, organised a trip to our local library to celebrate Book Week Scotland. The Nursery parents joined their children and we all walked up to the library together. Angela met us when we got there and shared a story about “Big Bill”, a Galloway Beltie.

After the story, the children and their parents enjoyed a library quiz and some of the children also took out library membership. We selected some books to take back to Nursery, on our library card.

Before we left, the parents all received a book for Book Week Scotland and the children all got special Book Week Scotland and Book Bug stickers.

It was a lovely visit and the children and parents had a great time.

Troy the Rescue Dog and our Fire Pit.

Today, the children in the Nursery, were doubly lucky to have two fabulous activities.

First we had a visit from Mrs Smith, the Headteacher and her beautiful Mountain Rescue Dog, Troy. Mrs Smith brought him to Nursery, so she could tell us about the job Troy does. She showed us his jacket and told us how he can go in and out of the helicopter, on a hoist.

We have been learning about Rescue Services and it was very interesting.

Later on in the morning, we learnt about Fire Safety and toasted marshmallows on the fire we made in the Fire Pit.

Mrs Moore showed us how to light the fire and how we have to kneel safely when we want to toast our marshmallows. We had a great time and it was nice to be by the fire in the frosty weather.

Children in Need 2016

The children of Dalry Nursery and Primary, all had a “Spotacular Day”.

We dressed up in spots, bought tickets for Lorna’s Cake and took part in a colouring competition. All our efforts were rewarded with a grand total of:

£178.63

This is absolutely brilliant. Well done to Alice, Christie and Campbell for winning the Colouring Competition. Miss Joss won the cake and Finlay also won a prize for his Poster.

In the Nursery, the children made Pudsey biscuits for snack and decorated them with Smarties.

Well done everyone and thanks once again.

Uniquely Ukulele!

Did you know the Ukulele originated in Hawaii? That’s just one thing P5/6/7 pupils have been learning each Friday morning, during their music sessions with Feis Rois!

Although we have only had two sessions, so far, everyone has made an excellent start at learning to play this stringed instrument; finding cords and perfecting strumming too. The sessions have also included learning and singing songs in Gaelic.

Our weekly sessions will continue, throughout the term. By the end we hope to be able to play a few tunes and hopefully perform these to friends and family at school events.

Remember, Remember…Bonfire Activities

Friday Fun Time – Bonfire Activities

On Friday the P1-7 pupils participated in learning experiences that developed their hazard awareness, fire safety and outdoor cookery skills. The pupils prepared and cooked apples on a campfire, lit mini fires using steel and flints, planted crocus bulbs and listened mindfully to their surroundings, creating sound postcards. Everyone went home happy, but slightly soggy after an afternoon of outdoor learning!

Huge thanks to our parent/grandparent helpers that offered their time and an extra pair of hands during the afternoon.

Pitch, Pulse, Magic!

Children in P5/6/7 were treated to an excellent music workshop, this morning, learning all about the role of ‘pulse’ in music.

We all learned about the history of tuba and trumpet and listened to a variety of different music, played on both instruments.

The children also took part in different activities, to add rhythms to the music being played; changing the pulse to alter the speed.

Everyone agreed they had learned a lot about the importance of rhythm in music and that they had had great fun learning all about it.

We’re now looking forward to visits, later in the year, from other musicians and learning about pitch and magic in music!

It’s that spooky time of year!

P1-7 took part in some spooktacular activities on Monday, very different from our usual first day of term!

Most pupils came dressed in their spooookiest costumes, they guddled in some gruesome gunge, made terrifying cakes and listened to some ‘chilling’ stories told by Anne Errington.

It was a blood-curdling kind of day!

It’s Harvest Time!

It’s Harvest time!

Most of the Gardening Club and some other green-fingered helpers collected in the last remaining vegetables from this year’s bumper crop. It’s been amazing how the pupils have given so much care and attention to their garden and is very inspiring to see!

The Gardening Club then prepared the Harvest gift bags after school, ready for delivery to the elderly members of our community on Friday. We packed 85 bags and every single one has something that the children have grown from seed, the gardeners should be VERY proud of themselves!

P3,4,5 Outdoor Learning – Pebble Poems

This term P3,4,5 have been learning about different aspects of grammar during their VCOP lessons. To show how secure they are, the class were asked to collect a selection of ‘pebbles’ and write a variety of nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, pronouns, proper nouns, punctuation, connectives and openers on them. We then brought them into class and correctly categorised them. The next day the pupils then made pebble poems about Autumn using the pebbles. The pebbles are now out in the playground for everyone to play with.

Aren’t they fantastic?!
