This week the gardeners and plenty of other helpers were sprucing up the front of our school. The girls and boys planted some trailing plants and beautiful, bright sunflowers in the pots. They then filled the hanging baskets that are now displayed on the fence. Let us know what you think!

As a celebratory end to the Primary’s Daily Mile participation this session, the Nursery and Primary are holding their very own Race for Life event for Cancer Research UK.
Our youngsters are the generation that could see ground-breaking treatments and cures for cancer in their lifetime. They’re the young warriors who could be the researchers and lifesavers of tomorrow. By taking part in Race for Life and uniting against cancer, they’ll be doing something really special together.
We’ll Race for Life:
At Dalry School playing field
On Thursday 30th June at 10am-1.15pm (family picnic after)
We want to make this a fun, end of term event and will be hosting a Family Picnic (during school lunchtime) after the race takes place. Please bring along a yummy picnic for you and your child(ren) to eat together. Bring along grannies, grandpas, aunties and uncles too, to watch your child participate in this special event. We’ll also have face painting, performances, raffle and more!
Families have been given their very own paper sponsor form to start collecting sponsors for their child’s Race for Life. Alternatively we have set up a Dalry School Just Giving page where you can donate online:

Some of the P5/6/7’s have been practicing their graph work out in the sun!
We started by collecting flowers, stones and sticks.
Here is Campbell and Jessica looking very happy and relaxed in the sun picking flowers.

We then totalled up all the flowers, sticks and stones we found (this took a while) and calculated the percentage of each. This was new maths for us but we managed to figure it out

Now came the pie part! We roughly calculated how much of the circle was going to be given to each item and divided it up accordingly. We added in the different objects to represent the areas of our pie chart:

We all had great fun creating out first pie in the sun.
Especially Alex, he was very happy!

As part of our IDL work for People Who Help Us, P1/2 have begun to set up their very own Post Office in the role play area of the classroom and have been using DVDs and books to learn about how the people who work there, help us.
This morning we took advantage of the beautiful weather, to take a walk in the village, to visit Lyndsey and her staff in the village shop and Post Office and do some real-life shopping in the shop and Post Office.
Whilst we were at the shop. We got some shopping for some of the teachers. Mrs Devlin needed some teabags, Miss Brown needed a packet of biscuits and Mrs Turner needed a stamp for her letter. None of the teachers had given the correct amount of money to buy these things, so the girls and boys had to work hard to identify the coins, count them up and some of the P2 children could even work out how much change they needed! It’s a good job we have been doing lots of money work, in class, over the past few weeks.
Once Imogen and Molly had put the stamp on the envelope, the letter was ready to post and Esme and Mrs McNally carefully crossed the road to put it in the post box. Our tip out helped us learn lots about how people help us in shops and post offices.

After some more disappointing vandalism in the School Garden at the weekend, the Garden Club members and teachers are very sad to say that the plants we’ve tended, watered and cared for have had to be replanted, yet again.
Can I strongly suggest to those that use our school garden out of school hours, that they treat the place where we work and play together with respect. We enjoy every day using our garden and it is heartbreaking for all when we visit our area to see things missing, moved, litter such as empty water bombs lying around and items damaged. We would love to share the space with you as we know it’s a really lovely spot, but please treat it with the care and respect that we do.

The children in P1/2 have been investigating different coins and notes this week. P1 have been sorting coins, to identify the different denominations and using the different coins in role-play. Yesterday they had their very own shop and took it in turns to be the customers and shopkeeper. They have also been taking part in other activities to help them add 1p and £1 coins.
P2 have used what they learned about different coins, last year and their mental addition skills to practice counting on to add coins of different values. Next week they will be learning about giving change when they don’t have the correct amount of money, to pay for something.
All the children have enjoyed making rubbings of the different coins. The P2 children have worked well to help the P1 children to find the coin they need to make a rubbing of and this work has also helped them to recall what each coin looks like; its shape, colour and size.

P3,4,5 have been learning about the skeletal system (the skeleton) as part of our IDL. During a topic lesson last week we had a number of carousel activities where we had to investigate, create and build skeletons. We learned the names of the bones and labelled them correctly. Our favourite bone is the top arm bone, called the humerous…how funny!
Here we are actively participating in the tasks and learning together…

P1/2 were very excited to hear that PC Ross was going to visit them, last Thursday afternoon, to tell them about how she and her colleagues at Castle Douglas Police Station helped us.
On Thursday they morning the children talked to each other about what they would like to ask PC Ross, to find out more about her job. Each child wrote their best question down, to ask her when she arrived that afternoon.
These are some of the questions they asked. If you’d like to know PC Ross’s answers, ask a P1/2 child to tell you as they all listened very well to her answers.

After the visit many of girls and boys said that a Police Officer’s job sounded very exciting and they’d like to be a Police Officer when they grow up! As you can see from the photos below, they all suit a police hat very well!

Pumpkins and Greenhouses…
This afternoon’s session was another busy one! Miss Brown, some of the keen gardeners and a few strong helpers put together our shiny-new greenhouse, after the old one sadly fell to bits when we rebuilt it last week!
We then planted our very own pumpkin seed with some compost into a small pot, which have now been placed in the cosy greenhouse to germinate and grow.
We’ll have to tend to our pumpkins carefully as there might be a competition later on in the year… Watch this sprouting space!
