To begin the new year, the whole school have been working together on an Olympics mini topic, this week.
each class chose a country they would like to find out about and the athletes who represent their country.
P1/2 chose Portugal
P3/4/5 chose Australia, and
P5/6/7 chose Brazil
Flags, maps, medals and even Top Trump cards have been made and in the course of these activities, we have all learned lots more about the different sports that are represented in the Olympic games.
Today, we celebrated our achievements by holding a Mini, Dalry Olympics! All the children had worked hard, at home to make an Olympic torch for our opening ceremony and each any every one looked super as they were paraded around the school field. The children then went on to take part in some Olympic events…with a twist (as you can see from the photos below!) After lunch we discussed and made plans for adapting the events for Paralympians and had a go at trying some of these ideas out. After our Daily Mile, in the form of The Road To Rio, the day ended with a Closing Ceremony. Medals were awarded and the national anthems of the three countries where listened to. Some braver pupils even tried to sing along in Portuguese (we had less trouble with Australia Fair!)
By 3.25pm there were a lot of happy, but tired children. We all agreed we’d had a great day!
Now we are looking forward to 5th September and watching the Paralympics from Rio.
