D&G Befriending Project | Enriching Young People’s Lives in Dumfries & Galloway
Address:
19 Bank Street, Dumfries, DG1 2NX
Who the service is aimed at:
Children and young people who may be facing challenges at home, school, or in the community, and who may need a break from day-to-day pressures, someone to talk to or the opportunity to undertake new experiences.
The service is not equipped to work with those who have extremely challenging behaviours, severe learning or physical disabilities or who require personal care.
This is an early intervention service, not a crisis service, and does not accept referrals from private care companies who accommodate looked after children and young people.
Support provided:
The Project offers young people experiencing challenges at home, school or in the community, the opportunity of extra support and regular positive adult attention.
Having a befriender can help the young person tackle difficulties before they get too big, introduce them to new activities and help them be the best they can be. The young people benefit from the energy and enthusiasm of their befrienders and gain confidence from forming a positive relationship with a supportive adult.
Age range:
8 to 18 years old.
Area covered:
Dumfries and Galloway
Who can make a referral?
Typically, referrals come from Social Work, Education, Health or other services. Children and young people can also be referred by a friend or family member.
To make a referral: Contact the service in the first instance by email or telephone to discuss the young person’s needs and how the service may be able to help. If appropriate, the service will send a referral form and the young person will be added to the waiting list.
Top tips for making a ‘good’ referral:
Befriending works best when:
- children and young people want to be involved
- when parents/guardians are on board
- when the referrer knows the young person well and can attend befriending review meetings
What needs to be in place before a referral is accepted (for example a Child’s Plan)?
A discussion with the service is needed before making the referral.
Is funding required for this service?
No, the service is free.
