{"id":6,"date":"2026-06-13T12:11:40","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T11:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/careexperience\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2026-06-13T16:25:05","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T15:25:05","slug":"what-is-care-experienced","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/careexperience\/what-is-care-experienced\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Care Experienced?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Scotland, Care Experienced is a term that is used to refer to children and young people who have either legally or informally had alternative arrangements in place in terms of their primary caregivers\/parents.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/thepromise.scot\/what-is-the-promise\/care-experienced-people\">The Promise Scotland<\/a> highlights that the term Care Experienced is used in reference to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201ca description of the situation [a child or young person] has grown up in;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>a recognition that this situation may grant them additional support and protection under law, and<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>an understanding of their personal identity.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is care experience?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k4x81Xwgj0M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under the \u2018Care Experienced\u2019 term, children and young people will sit within one of the following groupings:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Looked after at home (previously referred to as LAC)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These care experienced children and young people will have been identified through legal process.\u00a0 They will be subject to a compulsory supervision order (CSO) and living with their birth parent(s).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Looked After Away from Home (LAAC) \/ Looked After and Accommodated <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These Care Experienced children and young people often will reside in foster care, kinship care (formally through a CSO and\/or a residency order), residential care, or secure care.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Adopted<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These Care Experienced children and young people will have previously been looked after and are now adopted.
