What Have We Been Up to?

  Session 2025-2026

P4/7 held a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle afternoon.  Parents and families were invited in to purchase items that the children had made from recycled items.  Tea coffee and cakes were served and the sum of £111.93 was raised which has been sent to the Solway Firth Partnership which helps keep our local waterways clear.

 

Burns Poetry Competition.  Well done to the pupils who represented Caerlaverock at the competition.

The Caerlaverock pupils joined the Brownhall pupils for a Brownrock day this week.  Pancake making and litter picking were two of the activities that took place on a super sunny Spring day.

Some of our pupils volunteered to attend the Remembrance Ceremony at Caerlaverock War Memorial and lay a wreath on behalf of the school.  They also attending the beacon lighting at the Quay at the end of Remembrance Sunday.

P1/3 enjoyed reading The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch.  They finished off their topic by making their own picnic lunch – just like in the story!

Drax Education welcomed P5/7 class to Tongland Water Power Station and explained about making electricity, the hydro scheme and the environment.

At a recent Assembly the pupils voted for their new captains, vice captains and JRSOs.  The new team is:-

As you can see, the children had a great time visiting the Cocoabean Company for their end of year excursion.

Fishing for the Future Project

The children were very fortunate to be invited to Drumlanrig Castle to learn more about our waterways, the vegetation along our river banks and what invertebrates live in our rivers. They then had a go at identifying different families and looking under a digital microscope.  The project is funded by the Holywood Trust and the Misses Robinsons’ Charitable Trust and delivered by the Nith Catchment Fishery Trust and Nith District Salmon Fishery Board.

The Cairn Cup was held recently at Raydale Park, Gretna.  Below are the pupils who represented the school in the tournament and another photo, holding their certificates. Well done team Caerlaverock.

P1/3, Mrs McCubbin and the lifecycle of a butterfly!

Mrs McCubbin has been teaching the P1/3 class the netball rules and they have been learning to play the game in teams.

P4/7 were invited to Dumfries High School Science Department to take part in a “Solids Liquids and Gas” workshop with Miss Henry.

Caerlaverock children had great fun at the latest Brownrock day which took place at Brownhall Primary. There were lots of spring and Easter activities in school and in the Crichton grounds.

Brownrock P1/3 classes had a super fun morning in the Spring sunshine at Caerlaverock Castle.  Although we couldn’t actually enter the inside of the Castle, the children still had great fun trying out the activities that had been provided.  Trying on the costumes was lots of fun as was hobby horse racing!  The morning was finished off in the Adventure Playpark!

P4/7 Brownrock classes visited the Devil’s Porridge Museum as part of their topic on WWII.  Miss Cochrane was on hand to guide them round the exhibits.  It was a great for the class to learn about the history of our area and its role in the wartime efforts.

We had a whole school trip to Dumfries Ice Bowl to try out ice skating. Some pupils used the penguins to support them and others went straight to ice skating boots but definitely some potential ice skaters of the future in the school!

Caerlaverock Primary supporting the local D&G Canine Rescue Centre by holding a dress as you please day.  £43 was raised for the charity and little Rommie the Dachshund came to thank the children.

Celebrating the life and times of Rabbie Burns by visiting the Robert Burns Museum and the Burns Mausoleum at St Michael’s Cemetery.

The results are in for the Burns Poetry Competition! Well done to our winners.

Visit from the Nith Catchment Fishery Trust teaching the children about the life  cycle of  a salmon.  They left the children a tank of salmon eggs to watch them hatch.

The pupils enjoyed a wonderful Christmas lunch cooked by Mrs Bonar, bringing lots of festive cheer to the school.  Yum!

Check out this amazing knitted Nativity scene hand crafted for the school by Mrs Thomson’s mum.

 

P1/3 are celebrating! They raised £290 doing a pyjama-sponsored walk to raise funds for Christmas treats and trips.  Well done P1/3 and Mrs McCubbin.

Our amazing P4/7 class have also completed their “Grow a Fiver” challenge and what an amazing effort they have made raising £700 as a class for special trips and treats over the course of the academic year.  Well done P4/7.

Remembering on Remembrance Day.  Some pupils also represented Caerlaverock Primary by laying a wreath at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday.

Continuing with our career talks, we had a Chef,  Nurse,  Nurse who also works in Nursing Education, Police Officer, Occupational Therapist Assistant and an Environmental Scientist visit. Each informative talk provided the children with inspirational and engaging thoughts for the future. Thank you to everyone who took the time to come into school.

 

Raising £74.77 for the Children in Need charity.  Thank you for all donations on our spot themed fundraising day.

Bonfire Night: What’s a firepit without some toasty gooey marshmallows roasted over it?

As part of Scottish Careers Week we’re excited to welcome a variety of parent and community members from different occupations who will be visiting to talk to the children about their careers. Our first guest was a farmer.  (See above for more info!)

Pupils wore eye patches as part of a learning activity to help them understand and experience visual disabilities.

Dumfries and Galloway Outdoor and Woodland Learning Group delivered an outdoor numeracy session showcasing fun activities that parents and carers can enjoy with their child in local parks, woods, beaches or even in their own gardens.

We had so much spooky fun at Caerlaverock from creative costumes to Halloween themed games. It was a fantastic day with just the right amount of spooky!

Hayley from Active Schools has been in school keeping the pupils active.  Hayley, assisted by Courtney Scriven, also gave the pupils coaching in Boccia.
