P5-7 Term 1

Butter Making Challenge

For our topic this term we have focused on materials and substances. We have been busy investigating solids, liquids and gases and changes of state. In order to do this, we took part in a butter making challenge! Working in teams, we had to take it in turns to shake tubs of cream. We knew that cream was a liquid. Eventually we discovered that, due to our application of force, the cream had turned into butter! We had successfully managed to change a liquid into a solid. After all of our hard work we got to taste it. Much to our surprise it tasted nice and just like the butter you buy in the shops.

Investigating Jam

With the help of some fantastic adult helpers we also got to experience the process of making jam whilst learning a little bit about the science behind it. Using berries that had been grown and picked from our own school garden, we made lots of jars of jam to sell. We got to try some too alongside of some delicious bread! In class, we discussed the setting point of jam which is 105 degrees Celsius. We discovered that water has a boiling point and a freezing point that result in the liquid changing states. This led us to have a go at recording different temperatures using real glass thermometers. In one learning experience we had explored science, maths and technology!

Mini Movies and Greenscreen Technology

As part of our learning in R.M.E, we have been exploring the story of the Buddha. First of all, we created storyboards in order to develop our understanding of Prince Siddhartha’s journey. Next, we worked together in groups to create, rehearse and film our own mini movies of the story. We made some props and costumes to bring our movies to life. Using greenscreen technology- just like they use in in real film studios- we have been able to begin adding special effects to our movies. We have added the background of a Buddhist temple and even some scenery of a town! Our editors will be busy putting all of the scenes together very soon so watch this space!
