Throughout the visit, our P7 pupils took great care in supporting their nursery buddies, demonstrating kindness, patience and encouragement as they helped them along the route.

When we arrived, we were lucky enough to see the oyster boat leaving the harbour to head out onto Loch Ryan to collect oysters from the local oyster beds ready for the festival. Watching the boat set off gave everyone a real insight into the work that takes place behind the scenes before the festival begins.

We also enjoyed a tour of the festival site with Allana, who showed us around the different tents and explained some of the preparations taking place ahead of the weekend.

One of the highlights of our visit was meeting Tristen from the oyster company. He shared fascinating facts about oysters, Loch Ryan and the work involved in bringing the oysters from the loch to the festival. Our pupils had the chance to ask thoughtful questions and learn more about the history and importance of this local industry.

Then came the moment many of us had been waiting for—trying an oyster! 🦪 Some of our pupils, along with a few adults, were brave enough to give one a taste. It certainly sparked plenty of conversation and some memorable reactions!

It was fantastic to see our Primary 7 pupils leading by example throughout the visit, showing maturity and responsibility while helping to create a positive experience for their nursery buddies. The trip also gave everyone the chance to make meaningful connections with our local community and experience first-hand something that makes Stranraer and Loch Ryan so special.

Links to learning

UNCRC: Article 29 – the right to develop talents, abilities and respect for the community and environment

Meta-skills: Leadership, self-management, communicating, collaborating, curiosity and critical thinking

SHANARRI: Safe, Healthy, Included, Active and Responsible

Four Capacities: Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors

Today, our Primary 7 pupils had the opportunity to put their leadership and responsibility skills into practice as they accompanied our Nursery children on a walk to the Oyster Festival site, where preparations are well underway for this weekend’s festival.
