{"id":225,"date":"2011-06-02T10:49:32","date_gmt":"2011-06-02T10:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/LeswaltPrimarySchool\/?p=225"},"modified":"2011-06-02T11:03:34","modified_gmt":"2011-06-02T11:03:34","slug":"eggs-tra-special-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/LeswaltPrimarySchool\/2011\/06\/02\/eggs-tra-special-trip\/","title":{"rendered":"Eggs-tra special trip!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Leswalt Primary School have continued their study of \u201cFarming\u201d by a trip to Glenhead poultry unit, near Leswalt.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">\u00a0The whole school set off on a sunny afternoon for a hike up to Glenhead Farm.\u00a0 Pupils passed through Aldouran Wetland Gardens before the scenic and sensory experience of the Glen walk, which was alive with the smell of wild garlic.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">On arriving at the top of the Glen pupils were met by Mr James Baxter at his recently purpose built unit.\u00a0 Pupils were just in time to see the hens coming out to play. The unit is home to 32,000 hens \u2013 which did get very noisy!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">Once inside the shed pupils learned about the conditions \u201cHappy Eggs\u201d are produced in.\u00a0 The children saw the range of egg yolk colours and were fascinated to hear how different countries like Japan and America all had a preference for different coloured yolk.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">Pupils saw thousands of hens- both inside and outside before the conveyor belt was started up and thousands of eggs moved along the line.\u00a0 After cleaning and checking all the eggs were stamped with the Baxter\u2019s special code before being placed in trays and sent away.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">It was a very interesting visit for all the staff and pupils of Leswalt.
