WaterAid Fundraising

To help the children begin to understand the wider world, we have been talking to them about the importance of water in our lives and they have been learning that, in some parts of the world, access to clean water and toilets is limited. We talked about what water tastes like in our country and some even tried out what it might feel like to carry a bucket of water on their head and they agreed that it would be very difficult.
As part of this work on global citizenship, we have put an empty water container in Nursery for the children to add any spare coins that you may have to make a contribution to the charity WaterAid. The container sits between the two cloakroom areas so that everyone can see it when they come to Nursery. We are delighted that the children have engaged well with these discussions and some have already kindly put coins in our bottle.
WaterAid is an international not-for-profit organisation, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. They work in 38 countries across Africa, Asia, Central America and the Pacific Region to transform lives in some of the world’s poorest communities.
Around 289,000 children die each year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation. That’s nearly 800 children each day, or one child every two minutes. We would like to make a small contribution to make a difference for these children by collecting any spare change you may have.

If you would like to find out more about WaterAid, you can visit www.wateraid.org, follow @WaterAidUK on Twitter or visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/wateraid.

We would appreciate your support in our efforts to help the children in this project and any spare coins in our water container will be gratefully received. Thank you to those who have already been kind enough to make a contribution.

Who Is Your Friend?

As part of our recent Health and Wellbeing focus on friendship, we talked to the children about who their friends are and what shows them that they are a friend. We would like to share some of their comments.

Kai: Dave’s my friend. We play with Lego.
Louie: Leah. She helps me to tidy up.
Archie: Nancy and Joshua are my friends.
Matthew: Archie’s my friend. We make a water slide together.
Fern: Marnie. She plays with the house with me.
Sophia: Evelyn’s my friend.
Imogen: Cole – he’s nice.
Remy: Kobe, my brother – he plays with me.
Kendall: I like to play in the park with my sister Ellie.
Alisha: I like to play with Nancy in the mud.
William: James plays with me and Doreen.
Leo: Fern. We play with the bricks.
Jasmin: little Cole. He plays with the Lego. Ellie: Evan. We dress up together.
Ally-May: I like to play toys with my friends.
Ellie: Evan – we do dress-up together.

Technologies

Some of the children have been developing their technologies skills as they learned how to safely use a hammer. They certainly experienced challenge as they had to follow instructions to stay safe, have an awareness of risk and show concentration and perseverance with this tricky activity. Hammering the nails into the wood and then positioning the elastic bands on their work developed the children’s motor skills and they experienced another area of technologies when they took their own photos of their work. There was a great sense of achievement after this activity and the children were very enthusiastic to try it again.

Word Of The Week

As the season changes and we begin to learn about Autumn, our “Word of the Week” this week is indeed Autumn. This may be a new word to the children so we will be using it a lot in Nursery and explaining what it means. Hopefully the conversations you have with your child will help to reinforce this learning in Nursery.

Growing Carrots

Over the summer one of our pupils learned to grow carrots, taking care of them herself in the family garden. By the time she returned to Nursery they were ready to harvest so she kindly brought them in to share with her friends. The children who stayed for lunch one day helped to wash and chop the carrots so that everyone could have a little extra treat with their lunch. Well done – it seems that we have another great gardener in our Nursery.

Well Done Fern

Fern’s family has been looking at the photo of her receiving her recent certificate:

“Fern was delighted to share her achievement with her family and was very proud of herself. Her confidence at nursery has grown enormously since starting and we now hear lots of stories about nursery and all her friends.”

It’s always lovely to hear that the children appreciate their achievements in Nursery and we are delighted that Fern felt rightly proud of herself. Very well done Fern! We are all impressed with the way you have grown in confidence.

Learning About Maths

National Maths Week Scotland brought a range of activities in Nursery to focus on learning in this area of the curriculum. We were delighted that some children brought in examples of numbers and shapes that they had found with their families. The children also talked about shapes as they printed in the art area and produced a great effort when faced with the challenge of making the biggest tower they could in the construction area. Counting the number of bricks in their towers was tricky but the children pointed carefully to help them count and were able to use the language of measure to talk about their construction, for example, using words like ‘bigger’, smaller’, ‘taller’ etc.

Happy Families

Two of our parents have been enjoying photos of different recent activities in Nursery.

Evelyn’s family said, “looks like Evelyn is doing well in nursery. I love seeing pictures of her and that’s she’s safe near the fire. 🙂 xx “

We are pleased that you like our little snapshots of Nursery life. The children are certainly learning the rules of staying safe near fire and are becoming confident near fire.

Leo’s Mummy was one of those parents who participated in this week’s “Rhyme and Storytime” taster session:

“Leo and mummy had lots of fun at the rhyme session. Look forward to the next one 😊”

It certainly looked like good fun with Eileen. She is checking the times that suited people most and we are hoping that lots of our families will join in with our sessions.

Thank you both for visiting the blog and taking the time to leave us a comment.

Rhyme And Storytime

Eileen, our Family Learning Co-ordinator, has shared these photos and detail of what happened at her taster session today.
“We had fun at our Rhyme and Storytime taster session this morning. We read a story about Incy Wincy and found out that he managed to get up the water spout. We learned some other rhymes about spiders, then we bounced our spiders up to the ceiling.”

This sounds like great fun. Eileen will be collating the results from her questionnaire about preferred sessions and will contact everyone to let them know when she plans to run more sessions.
