Calside Primary Home Learning January 2021
Home Learning will begin from 11th January. Our programme for home learning is carefully planned by the teachers to give each child continuity of learning and to build on the progress your child was making in class up to Christmas. It is also planned to allow for family learning activities as we know that home learning can be stressful, particularly when you have children of different ages, learning styles and needs.
A few general things to remember:
● A school day is made up of a range of activities, breaks and social time. Your child does not sit at a desk all day.
● Nor do they sit in front of a screen all day: too much screen time can over-stimulate and you may find they then struggle to sleep.
● Children benefit from routine. All our classes have visual timetables so children know what to expect. They include regular breaks, daily exercise and a mix of creative & imaginative activities as well as screen time. If you want some help devising a schedule that suits your family, please email the class teacher, Mrs Gamble or the school office.
● However, judge the children in front of you: we all had days in the first lockdown where we needed a break to do something else.
● All of us learn best in different ways. Your child may prefer to be active, like to listen or be a visual learner. Your child’s class teacher knows them well, and can advise how best to keep them stimulated if you find they are struggling.
● The children benefit from social interaction. Each Class Team has a chat channel so they can keep in touch with their friends. If you cannot access Teams, please let the class teacher know and they can help.
● Family activities such as baking, playing games, helping with chores or doing craft are all valuable learning activities.
● During this difficult time, the children are learning to be resilient and care for others. These social skills are very important, and doing things to help people on their own or who are vulnerable are also great learning opportunities.
● As well as teaching core skills in school, we also ensure that they can transfer these skills in real-life situations. We will set a Challenge on a Friday which encourages the children to think creatively and solve problems: remember to share these on Teams as both the children and the staff enjoy seeing their solutions!
Most importantly, remember that the staff are available for support and advice. Please let us know if you need any help or a chat about how things are going.
Home Learning Outline
○ A weekly activity grid will be sent each Monday. This will be emailed to parents of pupils in P1-P4 and in the Rainbow Room, and to the children’s own emails for P5-P7. It will also be available on the Class Team. If you do not receive this, please let the school office know.
○ The weekly activity grids contain similar activities to allow families to work together sometimes.
○ Literacy and Numeracy will be set on a Monday and a Wednesday. This is tailored to the Literacy and Numeracy groups that your child works within while in class. This will be emailed to parents of P1-P4 and to the pupils directly in P5-P7.
○ Work should be uploaded to the Class Team Homework channel or emailed to the class teacher. Teachers will be checking progress on Tuesdays and Thursdays in order to plan the next core tasks.
○ Class teachers can be contacted by email or via the Class Team. As staff are also providing childcare in school, they will answer as promptly as they can, but this may not be immediate.
○ All children have Sumdog accounts: teachers tailor the activities on Sumdog to match your child’s Literacy and Numeracy ability. They will monitor progress and adapt your child’s activities as needed. There will also be Class Challenges on Sumdog which we know they love!
○ Mrs Gamble will set a Headteacher Challenge on a Friday. This is designed to build resilience, perseverance and problem-solving skills, as well as having some fun! Remember to upload your efforts onto Teams as the children and the staff love seeing what everyone has tried.
Support for Learning
Some children will also receive intervention packs such as Literacy Ladders or Closing the Literacy Gap. This is to ensure that children who were already working on these programmes continue to progress.
