Primary 4 – Thurs 23rd April Numeracy

Today if you can I’d like you to get on Sumdog to see if you can complete the challenge Sumdog has chosen for you. We have 6 people already working on it so it would be good to see a few different names coming up.

Today give this game a go. Cubes and cylinders, we did number sequences in a recent assessment so see what you can remember. Pyramids we have also done number sequences, so give this a go too. Choose your level and within the level you can also choose how tricky the sequences will be as they will start removing some of the numbers to add to the excitement!

Primary 4 -outdoor multiplication fun

Today we took our numeracy outside. We had a race in teams to gather sticks, stones and pine cones, gave each item a value and then had to calculate what each individual collection was worth by writing a multiplication sentence. Working with a partner we then used dice to give us multiples and had to collect everything we needed to display the product in an array. In P4 we love to apply our skills in all sorts of different ways and what a great way to enjoy a beautiful sunny day and learn at the same time!

primary 4 – multiplication and division extravaganza!

We had an afternoon of fun practical numeracy activities. We created an amazing multiplication array village. We pretended the Kapla were hot sausage rolls and the bakers had to share them evenly between plates – knowing our tables was a real help with this. We then wrote fact family number sentences and took photos to evidence this for the Bakery Boss (Mrs O) We played some great times table games using playing cards, counters, egg boxes, plastic cups, counters and fingers! Ask us to show you/tell you at home what they were all about!

Primary 4 – Problem solving extravaganza!

This week in Numeracy we worked with the Numicon rods in a train challenge. First of all we had to work out what the rods added up to. Then we had to build as many trains as we could that added to the same value, while only using a colour once in each train. There were many skills in use; investigating, experimenting, predicting, explaining, discussing, comparing, solving and calculating!

P4-Function Machines and Algebra

This week in maths some of us have been working on the following skills
– Use symbols or words ‘equal to’, ‘not equal to’, ‘less than’, ‘greater than’, correctly to describe & show number relationships

– Within numbers to 100, complete number statements using the symbols for less than, greater than and equals

– Within numbers to 100, create number statements using the symbols for less than, greater than or equals

– Within numbers to 100, use Numicon and/or my knowledge of Fact families to find the missing numbers in given statements when pictures or symbols are used to replace a number.

As usual, we are active in our learning and we played a great game where we had to run to corners with the greater than or less than symbol when we had worked out the answer. We ran to the middle if the equation balanced. For extra challenge there was some mental calculating involved in some of the equations before we could decide.

There are also some good online games to help reinforce our learning.

Some of us worked with function machines. A Function Machine is a diagram that represents a machine that takes an input, applies a rule and delivers the answer as an output.
The task is either to determine the input, the output or whatever operations take place inside the machine. We will all be using function machines as another way of applying our numeracy learning.

P4 – Music movement and maths!

1,2, skip 4,5 jump!
This week we have been looking at number patterns on the 100 square and talking about what we see. We have been looking for repeated patterns of number and particularly liked all the things there were to discuss about counting in 3s. We then used musical score of three beats in a bar to dance a waltz to some beautiful classical music adding a little skip or bounce every time we reached a multiple of 3! It was a fun way to get the 3s to stick in our head. Using music and movement together in maths really keeps us engaged and learning in a different way.
