P4 are working hard to calculate money calculations this term.
Each pupil drew an item for our class “virtual” shop and decided on a price for that item. These items are to be displayed on our class washing line for our 9 o’clock maths challenge. Pupils will choose 2 items and write the prices of these items as a chimney sum and add them together. The total cost will then be deducted from either £5, £10 or £20 with the change written as various money combinations.
This is helping pupils to gain a better understanding of the addition and subtraction of decimals (money) – skills for life, learning and work.
This will also help us when making preparations for our enterprise project for the school summer fayre.
This term, P4 are receiving weekly sessions from Barnardos to help encourage pupils to think about “oppression” and “liberation”. Pupils take part in circle time style games and take part in discussions to share their views and opinions.
Primary 4 are enjoying Mindfulness Sessions this term. Pupils have learned to relax their bodies through a 3 minutes body scan, they have learned about being in the “present moment” and how to be mindful of their breathing, hearing and seeing.
Pupils in P4 enjoy listening to Mindful/Relaxation Stories which help them to bring a sense of calm to their minds and bodies.
On Friday, we listened to “Peaceful Butterfly” in the outdoor classroom. Then pupils coloured in a butterfly printout and/or sketched and coloured on our own butterfly pictures.
P4 thoroughly enjoyed Fit Thursday last week having participated in football, rugby, gymnastics and hockey sessions.
Pupils also had the opportunity to use the scooters, played playground games with Mr McCormack, had dance with Miss Cumming and took part in a Whole School Run-A-Mile.
As part of our “Questioning Minds” classroom focus and Data Handling in Numeracy this term, Primary 4 are enjoying regular opportunities to conduct surveys amongst their classmates.
Pupils have constructed their own interview questions as well as being given set questions to gain more information about the likes and dislikes of classmates.
This term, P4 are learning about Data Handling. Pupils have conducted their own survey to find out information about their classmates and presented their findings in a bar graph.
P4 also surveyed each other to find favourite fruit, cereal, crisps and pets. This information was collected in the form of tally marks in tables. Numicon and Cuisenaire rods were used as visual aids to represent each answer prior to the construction of bar graphs on a bar graph template. Pupils were then challenged to create their own graphs on squared paper.
Today P4 learned about the different parts of the brain and what they are responsible for.
Pupils were encouraged to look at, then recall items under a blanket, test starch in test tubes with various amounts of iodine, investigate the process of dissolution, build a structure that can withhold a heavy book using paper and match images of seals using their features.
P4 had great fun being scientists for the day. Please take a look at some of the tasks they were involved in.
