P1- Telling the Time
We have been learning all about time. We have focussed on-
. What we already know including hearing time spoken about throughout the day at home and school, seeing the time on clocks, watches, phones, iPads, TVs and computer and units of time including days, weeks, months, years and even hours, minutes and seconds!
.We sang songs to help us to remember the days of the week and months of the year and are working in the order of these.
.We sorted everyday activities into things we do in the morning, afternoon or evening and learned about day and night.
.We learned about the structure of an analogue clock 🕰 It has a clock face, hands which tell us different parts of the time and numbers from 1-12 with 12 always being at the very top. When the big long minute hand points here it means o’clock!
.We worked in teams to create our own clock using hula hoops, sticks, flash cards and numicon. It was challenging but lots of fun!
.We played time bingo to help us to tell o’clock times.
.We have been telling our teacher the time during the school day.
P1- Happy 5th Birthday Daisy
Daisy turned 5 on one of the Inset days last week but don’t worry, we managed to get this lovely photo of the birthday girl with her two friends Georgia and Amelia.
P1- Monsters Love Colour
We combined literacy (rhyme) and art to explore colour mixing using the story Monsters Love Colours. We discovered that from the 3 primary colours we could make many more colours including orange, green and purple.

We also discovered that mixing black and white together makes grey. The more white we added made the grey colour created get lighter and lighter! But more black made it darker in shade.
Messy fun, cooperation and lots of learning!
P1- Writing for a purpose
Look out for your invitation to our ‘Bookbug Gifting Event and Picture Book Prize Ceremony’. Our buddies will be coming along too to help us to vote for our favourite story, before we get to take our Bookbug bag home forever!
We had a great time writing our invites today and decorating them before putting them into an envelope to give to our mums, dads and special grown-ups at home. We hope lots of you can come along and see what we have been up to in school with our Bookbug bags.
P1- Learning to become a writer
We have been learning that writing is a way to communicate. Sharing our ideas verbally and in picture format is very important in learning to be a successful writer as ‘you can’t write it until you can say it first!’ Here are a few examples of our news sharing writing task.
P1- Local library trip
We visited the new Menziehill library for the second time with our p7 buddies. We chose a story for them to read to us and even tried to read some of the words ourselves using our sounds learning to decode words. We spoke about he characters, what happened and our likes and dislikes.
P1- Firework Fun!
As part of our learning about festivals and celebrations around this time of year, we learned a little about Bonfire Night, how to stay safe and used our art skills to create wonderful firework pictures and sparklers to take home. We loved blowing the paint to make different patterns and shapes and playing with our ‘fire-free sparklers!’
P1- Teach a Teddy (feedback)
We have been learning how to extend our learning and deepen our understanding of concepts by ‘talking our loud’ and explaining our thinking. This week we worked in partners to ‘teach a teddy’ all we know about teen numbers. It was quite tricky but this is something we will continue to develop over the course of this year.
P1- Partner Reading Fun
We are getting so good at blending our sounds into words and can now work with a partner in class to practise reading with accuracy and speed using our fabulous mini reading books!
We hope you have enjoyed hearing us reading these at home too!
