P1- Shapes are everywhere!

We have been learning all about 2d shapes. We were shape detectives and went out on a shape hunt, sorted and drew our own shapes, made shape families and our own creative shape pictures. We have been learning the names and properties of lots of different shapes and used the computers to help apply our learning in a new way. Next we will learn a little about shapes which are not flat, but instead have 3 dimensions.

P1- Christmas Trees Outdoors

We were very busy with Christmas crafts this afternoon. We created some lovely Christmas cards using fine motor skills and creativity to take home to our special grown ups, made some bird feeders to hang outside in our garden to help the birds find food whilst we are away on our Christmas school holidays and lastly worked in pairs or trios to create our own Christmas tree representations using outdoor resources in our environment. Take a look at some of our wonderfully imaginative designs.

We thought about the shape of the tree, how to fit it into our working space, teamwork and sharing. We also included a trunk, a stand, some lights, tinsel, decorations and a star on the top of some of our designs!

P1- Buddy Pod Time

We spend time catching up with our big buddies at the Pod earlier this week. Some of the creations from this time were an obstacle course to help balancing skills and fitness, a team game with a ‘net’ to try to throw across to get points, a car used to drive us to work and lastly, a house which kept growing and growing. Very imaginative and creative ideas Primary 1!

P1- A Leafy Start to Term 2

As part of our learning about the world around us and the changing seasons, lots of our learning across the curriculum this week has been themed to leaves.🍁

We learned about what happens in autumn and were interested in discovering why the leaves fall and change colour. We went out to collect leaves which we used for some different learning opportunities.

In numeracy we used leaves to sort and group, estimate and count and sequence. We even tried some leaf rubbings in the outdoor classroom and tried to choose autumnal colours.

We helped each other to make lovely leaf necklaces. It was very tricky to tie the string to the stick and to carefully poke a little hole into each leave as we added it on. We even made a nice headband for Mrs MacPhail and she was very pleased with it!

Finally through the story Leaf Man we developed our literacy and expressive art skills. We loved how all of the illustrations in the story are made from leaves and even created some of our own. They look great!

Overall, some lovely leafy learning to kick start term 2!

P1 – learning to rhyme and write

We have been working hard on our understanding of rhyme. We know that words that rhyme sound the same at the end and we hear them lots in stories, nursery rhymes and in songs. We listened to rhyming stories, did some rhyming word matching jobs and worked with partners to spot the odd word out- the one that didn’t rhyme! Our funny rhyming hats helped us to stand up and explain to the others why we made our choice using the words and pictures to help.

We have also been trying hard to write our sounds and names in lots of different ways and our new favourite was water painting these outside. We had to be fast before the sun dried them up and made our hard work disappear!

P1 – Our Garden Plans Are Well Underway

We are independent learners who can make decisions, contribute to and influence our learning environment. We have been making grand plans to develop our very own P1 garden area into an outdoor learning space with lots of opportunities for us to grow and develop life and learning skills.

We have already focussed on what things we already have in the area, worked together to share and compare spaces we would like to play with those we wouldn’t, measured and figured out the shape of the space  and came up with some ideas of things we would like to play and learn in our garden.

Managing risk and having fun learning in the mud

We loved our muddy morning playing and learning together in the digging pit and mud kitchen. We worked safely and shared tools and resources, being kind and considerate to those around us. We saw lots of worms and placed them safely inside the tyres. We looked for treasure in the soil and saw how deep into the earth we could dig with the different sized tools. In the mud kitchen we used different pots, pans, bowls, bottles and things to mix and stir to make all kinds of tasty treats such as mud milkshakes, hot chocolate, worm soup and magic potions! We practised our pouring, measuring and comparing skills and best of all had lots of muddy fun!  Continue reading Managing risk and having fun learning in the mud
