To develop our independence and application of subtraction strategies we had lots of fun using ‘chilli challenge’ subtraction cards to challenge ourselves to solve a range of subtraction problems. We worked hard to record our thinking too!

P1- Pick up a Puzzle
Some of us decided to spend some time on these alphabet and opposite jigsaw puzzles during our play this week. Well done Matthew and Libby for not giving up and working hard to fit all the pieces together independently!
P1- Super sense of touch
We are learning about our senses and focussed on touch earlier this week in a number of fun play to learn tasks including a mystery object game, an independent ‘textures to touch’ picture which our teacher asked us to explain later and got the opportunity to play in a range of different messy mediums such as spaghetti, icey water, lentils, gloop and mixed playdough! It was a busy learning time but lots of fun too!
P1- Learning to Login
We learned how to log onto the school computers in ICT this week.
It is quite a tricky process with lots of steps and buttons to remember to press in the right order. We did very well for our first time and will continue to practise this life skill throughout the coming weeks until we can to is unsupported, independently and a little faster!
We learned how to power on the parts of the computer, how to use our ‘bunny ears and Peter Pointer’ to unlock by pressing 3 keys at once (we look for the ones starting with C.A.D) and how to input our usernames and passwords. It was very tricky to find all of the correct keys but we all got on in time to play some online learning games.
Miss Thompson is sorry she didn’t get any pics but she was very busy helping us with our technology instead!
P1- Christmas Trees Outdoors
We were very busy with Christmas crafts this afternoon. We created some lovely Christmas cards using fine motor skills and creativity to take home to our special grown ups, made some bird feeders to hang outside in our garden to help the birds find food whilst we are away on our Christmas school holidays and lastly worked in pairs or trios to create our own Christmas tree representations using outdoor resources in our environment. Take a look at some of our wonderfully imaginative designs.
We thought about the shape of the tree, how to fit it into our working space, teamwork and sharing. We also included a trunk, a stand, some lights, tinsel, decorations and a star on the top of some of our designs!
P1- Representing characters through art
We cant wait to see all of our grown ups next week to help us to cast our votes for the Picture Book Prize 2020 through Bookbug and Scottish Book Trust.
Here we are working in groups to create collage characters which will form part of our display. We tried hard to notice colours, textures and space and worked so well together in this tricky and sticky job!
P1- Invention and play
We love learning and playing in our class and outdoor environment and this week lots of us made some very inventive and creative models using different construction materials. We can share our thinking and tell others about our designs and how we overcame challenges. Amongst other things we had a waterfall, a new floor, a house with a trampoline, a train, some tall tall towers, a Lego work truck and even a real stick man!
P1- Adding colour to the world
As part of our learning about colour, we read the book ‘The Colour Thief’ about an alien who is so miserable living on his planet where everything is grey, so flies to earth to steal all of the vibrant colours to take home with him.
We created this lovely colourful display using colour mixing techniques with paints, oil pastels to create our favourite colour balloons and some collage work to represent planet earth. We loved sharing why we love our favourite colour so much with everyone. Here are some examples…
”I love green like the grass, plants and dinosaurs”
”I love red like strawberries, hearts and fire engines”
”I love blue like the sky, the ocean and sharks”
”I love pink like cotton candy and milkshakes”
P1- Reading, sorting and writing words
We have been learning to spot vowels in 3 sound words. We had lots of fun hunting for word cards and worked either individually or with a partner to read it, identify the vowel and sort it into the correct place, before trying to write it down.
P1- Firework Fun!
As part of our learning about festivals and celebrations around this time of year, we learned a little about Bonfire Night, how to stay safe and used our art skills to create wonderful firework pictures and sparklers to take home. We loved blowing the paint to make different patterns and shapes and playing with our ‘fire-free sparklers!’
