Yesterday we were very excited to be visiting the Sheltered Housing and spend time with the ladies and men that live there. We did jigsaws together, read some books and then we sang some songs together. We really enjoy our visits there and look forward to the next time.
Class Literacy
This week in our class literacy time we continued with learning about the elements of a story. Last week we spent time learning all about the characters in a story and what they do and we added this bead to our bracelet. This week we have been learning about the setting of a story and we worked through some books as a class, talking about where and when the story takes place and looking for clues that can help us identify the setting, we were very good at noticing things such as snowflakes in the background told us it was Winter and probably quite cold.
We added the setting bead to our bracelets and we worked with a partner in our new groups to chat about a book and decide where the story took place and look for clues about when it took place. We then shared this with the class which we enjoyed.
Well done Primary 1!
Learning about doubles
This week in numeracy we have been learning all about doubles. We started off having a discussion about what a double is and that to make a double we need to make an identical set or number on the other side, with the hoops we took it in turns to stand in the hoop, then Mrs Paton called out double 1 and one of us would jump in the other hoop to show the double of 1. This was lots of fun and we were able to work up to double 7 before we ran out of space in the hoops!
We then worked around different stations to help us learn more about doubling. We used mirrors and objects to work out doubles, played a doubles froggy game and also used paint to make double splats which we then wrote the number sentence underneath.
Happy Birthday Lorena
Today Lorena turned 6, here she is with her badge on and her card from her classmates. We sang Happy Birthday and she told us all about the party she had, sounds like lots of fun! Happy Birthday Lorena!
Numeracy Event
We had a lovely time at the open morning showing off some of our numeracy skills and we enjoyed playing some of the games with our parents. Thanks for coming!
Happy Birthday Noah!
Noah celebrated his 6th birthday yesterday, here he is with his lovely card from his classmates! We sang Happy Birthday and Noah told us about some of his lovely presents. Happy Birthday Noah!
Learning about money
On Friday afternoon we were learning all about money and before we started our activities we had a discussion about what money is and what we need it for. We were able to tell Mrs Paton where we get money and what sorts of things we use money for – we also could sort items into what we need and what we want. We decided that we need food and clothes but things like toys and holidays are things we want.
We then worked around different activities, we had a little shop set up and we took it in turns to be the shopkeeper and the shopper, this was lots of fun and we used our adding skills to work out how much we needed to pay. We also played a money game on the whiteboard and made some caterpillar pictures by drawing around the coins. In the sand tray we had to find the coins, pick them out with the tongs and then match the coin to the Numicon shape, we were also able to work out that a 5p and a 2p adds to 7p and placed this beside the shape. We worked very hard!
Class Literacy
In our class literacy time this term we are learning how to retell a story, we started this week with learning all about characters and what is/is not a character. We are working in new co-operative groups for some of our literacy time this term and we have given our groups a name, we really enjoyed this and are looking forward to working together next week.
A Visit from PC Morag
On Friday we had a visit from PC Morag, she was in visiting the nursery and popped into our classroom. We were all very excited to see her and we went outside and sat in the police van and had a go at turning the lights and siren on!
Buddy Time
This afternoon we spent time with our P6/7 buddies. We went outside and played some games with them, our favourite was rounders football, we loved it! Then we spent time designing a penguin that is going to be part of the Maggie’s Penguin Parade. The winning design will be used on our school penguin and once the Penguin Parade is finished the penguin will return to our school, it is very exciting!
