Book Week: Picture Book Awards – Reading, activities and vote

Today, P6 went to P1 to carry out the Picture Book Awards project. The Primary 6 pupils have worked very hard to develop their story-telling skills, develop activities linked to their stories and design questions to get the P1 pupils to really think about their story books.

We had the chance today to read to small groups of P1s. We set up reading and activity stations for our four stories – “Love Monster and the Perfect Present”, “The Snuggle Sandwich”, “My Busy Being Bella Day” and “Oh Dear, Geoffrey”. We really enjoyed carrying out our roles within our team, and we feel the P1s enjoyed the chance to hear our stories.

At the end of the session, we carried out a vote to see which book was most popular. Each P1 chose their favourite book from the 4 books, and the winning book was “Love Monster and the Perfect Present”. Well done to all the teams for working so hard on their book presentations and the P1s for taking part so enthusiastically in the project!

Open Morning – Health and Wellbeing: It’s an emergency!

Recently in class, we have been looking at keeping ourselves safe in health and wellbeing. During our open morning, we were looking at how to react in an emergency situation. We learned through a presentation and videos how to assess a casualty and how to react in an emergency. We were shown how to place someone in the recovery position and discussed when it is appropriate to call 999. We also learned about the seriousness of prank calls and how they waste the time of the emergency services and risk lives.

We had 4 different activity stations which we used to learn more about personal satety and helping others in times of need. On the Interactive Whiteboard, we played a game where we were in charge of a control centre for the emergency services, and we had to sort real calls from prank calls. We were provided with instruction card reminders at another station, and we had the chance to practice our skills in placing someone in the recovery position. At another station, we had scenario cards and had to decide whether each scenario would require an emergency (999) call, and if so which service they would most likely require. Finally, we had great fun using Mr Sturrock’s iPad when playing the “emergency call coach” game, which developed our skills in making emergency calls.

We had a busy but fun morning where we learned very important life skills.

Fab Fit Friday: February 2014

For our February Fab Fit Friday, we had the chance to take part in three very different activities. We experienced outdoor hockey, where we developed stick and control skills and played mini games. We also had the chance to develop our team-playing skills and shooting abilities with the basketball activity. Finally, to end our active morning, we had the chance to chill out in the “relaxation room”, where we got comfortable and meditated whilst listening to relaxation stories.

Mr Sturrock’s Maths Group – Time work

In Mr Sturrock’s Maths setting group, we have been working on time. We have been looking at 12 and 24 hour time conversions and onversions between minutes, seconds and hours. We have carried out lots of fun and exciting activities, including a Maths hunt based on time conversions, loop card group games and co-operative problem solving activities.

P.E. – Planning our stations

For our gymnastics work in P.E, we had the chance to create our own activity stations. We used a web programme called “Espresso” to create plans for an activity station. We set this station up safely in the gym hall, planned a linked sequence for the station and shared this with the Primary 2’s. We had great fun designing our own gymnastics activity.

Virgin Money Project – The Winners!

The Virgin Money enterprise project results are in! We all worked very hard at Christmas time to sell the enterprise products at our craft sale, and Gillian came to present the winning group with their prizes (a £5 gift voucher each!). The winning group, “Santa’s Little Helpers” designed and made Christmas t-shirts to sell at the fayre. Well done to all teams for making a profit!

Mr Sturrock’s Maths Group – Co-operative decimals work

We love carrying out tarsia puzzles in Mr Sturrock’s Maths group. Everyone in our co-operative group is given a role within the group and cards to sort and match together to create a large shape. The tarsia puzzles have lots of maths and numeracy questions on them. The challenge is to sort the cards together as a group as quickly and accurately as possible. We have recently been working on decimals puzzles.
