P6 have been very lucky to be chosen to take part in golf sessions with coaches from Dundee College. In our first week of golf, we worked on chipping. We were taught skills in stance and how to hold a golf club. We worked on lots of fun games to improve our aim.
Lent – Temptation
As part of our learning about lent, we have been looking at temptation and the story of Jesus in the desert. Mr Sturock put envelopes saying “do not touch” on the front. We also had party poppers on our tables at the start of the lesson. Mr Sturrock did not tell us any more about these envelopes, and for many of us the temptation was too much to touch the envelopes! We learned a valuable lesson about resisting the temptation to do wrong, and we had the chance to look at different rreal-life scenarios to discuss what we would do and how a Christian would act. We talked about how difficult it can be to resist temptation in life.
PDSA visit school
We had a visit from a PDSA nurse in St Pius recently. She came to talk to us about our pets and how we can ensure they are properly cared for and loved. We found out lots about the work of the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals through videos, talks, interactive votes and through looking at hands-on resource. We received a special magazine at the end of the workshop, and have lots of information to take away with us to ensure our pets are healthy and happy.
SSPCA visit
We had a visit from an officer from the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She talked about the work of this important charity, and we learned lots of important tips about what to do if we find an animal which we think needs help. We had a chance to ask the officer questions and share our animal stories with her! We learned some very important lessons about wildlife welfare during this workshop.
Reading Rings – Bloom’s Taxonomy
We have been making use of Bloom’s Taxonomy to structure questions during our reading rings times. This involves working on different levels of questions. We are currently working on questions designed to help us REMEMBER aspects of our story. Next term, we will be moving on to looking at questions to check our UNDERSTANDING skills.
Swimming!
We have been having great fun learning new skills at swimming. We go to swimming at St Paul’s Academy pool every Monday, and we have been learning new skills and techniques in the water. We have all been showing good improvements in the water each week. We have been discussing how swimming is a good activity for keeping fit.
World Book Week – School Book Hunt
We had great fun going on a Book Hunt as a whole school during World Book Week. We had to search for clues which led us to books hidden around the grounds of the school. Each book had a number and corresponding letter. When we ordered the numbers and letters we found a secret message linked to reading. We had such a good time on our hunt, especially when sharing the excitement and magic of the activity with the children from P1b.
World Book Week – Krispy Kreme Fundraising
As part of our World Book Week celebrations, we worked hard to raise some money for the Book Bus project which Mr Sturrock is taking part in this summer. We worked with Krispy Kreme in Edinburgh to “raise some dough” through their fundraising scheme. We had great fun selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts whilst making a profit for underprivileged children in Africa to provide them with books and craft resources to have fun learning different stories. We sold to pupils, parents and staff on Thursday 6th March. Our efforts even appeared in the Dundee Courier.
World Book Week – The World’s Biggest Book Show
As part of our World Book Week celebrations, we watched “The World’s Biggest Book Show” online. Dick and Tom took us through an enjoyable journey into the world of books, through looking at how writers create imaginative texts to how illustrators create art pieces to match the writers’ stories.
Shrove Tuesday – 4th March 2014
Happy Pancake Day! To signify the end of treats and the coming of lent, P6 were treated to pancakes at the end of the day today. Most of us chose chocolate spread for our pancake. 1 person preferred jam and another preferred their’s plain. Everyone really enjoyed their pancake.
Tomorrow (Ash Wednesday) is the beginning of Lent. Think about what you will give up for lent. Remember from class we talked about choosing something that is simple (can practically be carried out) but not easy (i.e. something you will miss).
