The Puppet Show

Well, this is our last full week in Primary one before we break for the summer holidays! Where has the time gone.

We have been busy continuing with subtraction this week, this time we had to find the missing number. That was quite a tricky job!

We planted the beanstalks, that we had been growing, into our school garden this week. Hopefully they will grow over the summer holidays. We’re not sure if we want to find a giant at the top of them though!!

We also wrote 2 sentences in our thinking books saying what we had planted in the garden.

We used the giant characters that we had created a few weeks ago and we wrote a story about them. We had given them a name and some of us took them on an adventure. Some of us talked about what they would like to eat, what games they would like to play and places they would like to visit.

We had our inter house sports this week. We joined P2, P2/3 and P3 and we split into our houses. Longhaugh Primary has 4 houses – Mains, Claypotts, Dudhope and Broughty. We then were split into 4 teams within our houses and we had to do an obstacle course. We were all timed and the quickest team will be announced on Monday!

We had a very special treat this week. A story teller was visiting Longhaugh Nursery and they invited us to come and listen to his tales and watch his puppet show. His name was Steven and he told us, with his puppets, the traditional tales The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Jack and the Beanstalk.

We all enjoyed it very much and it was lovely to visit all the boys and girls in the Nursery.

Whole school trip to the Cinema!

We’ve had a very short week this week as the school was closed Monday and Tuesday for Victoria Day and Jubilee Day!

We have, however, continued this week to revise all our sounds and go over all the words on our word wall. We have been doing more phonic activities around the classroom and have been working on our blends so we can continue to sound out and make new and more difficult words.

Again we have been looking at subtraction and we have been practising our take away sums on our white boards.

On Friday was our whole school trip to the cinema to see Journey to the Mysterious Island. We had hoped we would be able to go to Camperdown Park and play games and have a picnic lunch. Unfortunately, our Scottish weather has not been kind to us and we had to change our plans.

We did manage, however, an hour or so in the park to eat our lunch and have a play in the park. We got back to school just in time as the heavens opened!! We were very lucky indeed.

This trip is to reward all the boys and girls at Longhaugh Primary School who have behaved well throughout the whole year and who have made Mr Munro and Mrs Jenkins proud.

Thank you Mr Munro and Mrs Jenkins very much, we really, really enjoyed our day!

P1a Assembly

Welcome back to Longhaugh P1’s blog!

We have continued to revise all our sounds this week but have also moved on to blends such as; cl, fl, sm, gr, etc. We have been using them to sound out and write longer and more difficult words.

We have continued to work on subtraction this week, looking at the number before and less than. We used Jack’s magic beans to help us and we wrote our take away sums on our white boards.

We built up our own character in our topic work this week. We had to create our own giant. Firstly thinking about his feet and legs, we then drew them on a section of a piece of paper. Then we had to think about his body and his arms and imagine what they would look like and draw them on another section of the paper. Lastly we had to create our character’s head and face. We had to use our imaginations and draw them on another section of the paper. When we had completed all our character’s body parts, we had made a whole giant. Our final thing was to give our character a name.

This week was the turn of P1a to show family, friends and the whole shcool their assembly. They decided to show everyone all the work they’ve been doing on Jack and the Beanstalk and they even acted out parts of the story. They did a fabulous job and everyone enjoyed it very much indeed!

Finally this week we all went on our P1 trip to Active Kids in Stanley! We had a fantastic time. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t as sunny as it has been over the last few weeks, but we didn’t let that stop us having fun.

We went on the trampolines, the go-carts, the fort, the jelly belly, the flying fox and all sorts of things.

We also went round with our teachers and had a look at all the animals that they have on the land. It was an excellent day out and we thoroughly enjoyed it!

Sensation Science Centre

We have only a few weeks left of P1 and we still have lots of things to do!

No matter how busy we are though, we are still doing our words and sounds every day. We were also using the phonics BeeBot, games and the sounds bibs to make words.

We’re still working on subtraction to 10, but this week we started to work out our take away sums using the number in your head number line! How smart are we??

We were back out into our school garden again this week, weeding and generally trying to keep it neat and tidy. We also planted the pumpkin plants and the petunias that we didn’t manage to sell at our garden centre.

At the end of our plants topic we have been looking at our garden and how nice it’s now looking, and we thought it would be nice to brighten up the shelter in our playground which is just beside our garden. We discussed what would be a good design to paint in the shelter and we all got letters home to make sure we bring old clothes into school on painting days. Luckily, Mrs Lynch’s son is an art student so he is coming in to help us chalk the outline of our design on the shelter walls.

Finally this week we went on our trip to Dundee’s Sensation Science Centre. What fun we had! We were able to climb in a giant head and slide down the nose! We looked at models of inside our eyes, checked our balance, sniffed all sorts of very peculiar smells of plants and animals. As you can tell the exhibition downstairs was all about our senses.

We then got a tour of the dinosaur exhibition and learned all about dinosaurs and how they lived and died millions of years ago. It was a fantastic day!

Sports Day

Hello again and welcome back to Longhaugh Primary’s P1 Blog!

We’re still going over our words and sounds every day and continuing to practice making new and familiar words. This is important as we are writing short sentences all by ourselves. This week we read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We talked about all the things that Jack found at the top of the beanstalk. We had to use our imagination and write a sentence about what we would like to find.

We were working on our subtraction to 10 again this week, we used the number washing line, number rhymes and our butterfly subtraction bag.

We have been working with our P7 gaming partners on the playstation Eyepet game. This week we all went to the Assembly hall and made our own junk model Eyepet. There were lots of different and wonderful Eyepets constructed from all kinds of boxes, bottles, yoghurt tubs etc.

Thursday this week was our infant sports day. It was a little windy and some of our sacks blew away but we had lots of fun and we all enjoyed joining in all of the races. There was a running race, a three-legged race, a potato and spoon race, a sack race and a skipping race. Many congratulation to all of the winners!!

Visiting the Garden Centres

Hello! Welcome back to Longhaugh Primary’s P1 Blog!

We go over our words and sounds every day and we are getting really good at making new words using our phonics games and the phonics bibs.

We have continued to work on subtraction this week with the butterfly bag and the butterfly washing line. We also talked again about the things we know about money and sorted out lots of coins and pegged and matched coins on the washing line.

Mrs Johnstone made up cups of fruit and we opened our fruit shop. We were all given a bag of coins and we had to write a price tag for our cup of fruit, then go to the till and pay for it using the correct coin. We also got to eat our fruit when we had paid for it! Yum!

As you know from the last few weeks, we have been planting seeds and making things to sell in our garden centre. This week we made seed packets and put seeds inside to sell. We coloured in the packets and drew the flowers on the front and labelled them so customers will know what they are buying.

It was exciting this week as we visited 2 garden centres, Turriffs in Broughty Ferry and Dobbies in Monifieth. We met Mr Turriff and we walked around the nurseries looking at all the plants. We also went into the room where the ladies make up the bouquets and floral displays.

At Dobbies we looked at all the things that they sell e.g., flowers, plants, garden ornaments, pots, compost, paving stones, fencing, fish, chickens, toys, cards, books etc. We went into the summer house and we all planted a pumpkin seed. We then finished our day by going to the cafe and having juice and a biscuit. We had a lovely time.

After visiting the garden centres we thought it was a good idea to go into our school garden and tidy it up a bit. We took turns at weeding and planting some potato tubors.

Gardening Mama

We have continued to practice and learn new words this week. We have played phonics games, matching games, used the word bee bot mat and our phonics bibs. We are getting really good at spelling out all our words!

We are still learning about subtraction. We had large hoops in the classroom and some of us had to stand in them. The teacher then took one of us away from the hoop and we had to work out the subtraction sum. We used the butterfly bag again this week and we were practicing take away with the butterflies and leaves and we wrote our sums on leaf books. We also used the butterfly washing line and discussed what was one less, two less etc.

This week we painted our clay pots with Mrs Lynch and stuck sparkly jewels on them ready to sell in our garden centre.

We also decorated paint pots with brightly coloured tissued paper and then painted them with glue to make them shiney and hard.

We each got a pot which we filled with soil and we were all given seeds. There were four different types of flower seeds and we planted them in our pots. We are looking after them and carefully watering them so they will grow into strong, healthy plants we can sell at our garden centre.

We looked at the beans we put into the glass jars last week. The beans that have had sunlight and water have started to sprout and we can see the shoots and the roots. The other beans are not doing so well, but we’re keeping an eye on them. We also planted cress seeds this week so we’re hoping we have cress to put in our sandwiches soon!

This week Mrs Adams and Miss Simpson introduced Gardening Mama on the DS. We were all given a learning partner and we discussed what makes a good learning partner. We were all very excited about playing this game on the DS’s!

Bean Experiment

This week we have been extremely busy even though we’ve only been at school for 3 days due to the May holiday and the election.

We have been working hard on our 3 letter words again this week, using matching games, board games, bee bot mats and our phonic vests.

Our teachers introduced subtraction to us this week. We discussed that subtraction means take away and we looked at the sign (-). The butterfly bag was used for the first time. We were given leaves and 5 butterflies and we had to take some butterflies away and practice, with our teacher, writing the sums on the whiteboards. We also used our currant buns masks and sang the song.

As part of our Plants topic, we intend to open a garden centre (details to follow) and make and grow things to sell, just like a real garden centre. This week we made clay tea light holders. We had to make sure they were big enough to hold a candle. Next week we are going to paint them with Mrs Lynch.

We also did a bean experiment. We talked about what beans need to grow and we decided that they need sunlight and water. We had 4 jars and filled the jars with paper and cotton wool. We split into groups and one group put their beans in a jar and watered it and put it on the window sill where it could get light. Another group put their beans into a jar and put it on the window sill but didn’t give it any water. The third group put their beans in a jar, watered it but put it into a dark cupboard away from the light. The fourth group put their beans into a jar and gave it no water and put it into the dark cupboard. We’re going to see how many of the beans grow. We drew the picture and wrote what we thought would happen in our Thinking Books.

In Mrs Lynch’s room the role play area is a pet Shop and we have been learning how to care for animals. There is also to be a gaming pod and this week we have just found out that we are going to have an Eye Pet. The P7’s are going to help us and we all have a learning partner.

We are very excited! We start next week!
