Run, run, as fast as you can….you can’t catch me, Im the Gingerbread Man!

This week in P1 we have continued to revise all our sounds and tricky words and practised writing CVC words and simple sentences. Have a look at our stories about our World Book Day character, I think you’ll agree we’ve been trying very hard with our sentence writing.

In number we have continued with addition and we have also looked at sharing. We have talked about halves, quarters whole and equal parts. We cut up cakes to show us the different equal parts. We were allowed to eat the cake when we had finished. Yum!

We were invited to Longhaugh Nursery this week to see ‘The Gingerbread Man’. It was a puppet show and we laughed at all the things the puppets did. We knew the story of The Gingerbread Man already so it was extra nice to see the story re-told in a puppet show.

Our p5/6 and P6 have been studying Victorians and they held an exhibition in the assembly hall. The whole school was invited to view the exhibition. We were excited when it came to our turn to go and see it. They had researched all about the Victorians and they had made models, drawn pictures and written stories about the food Victorians ate, the clothes they wore, the houses they lived in, the toys the children played with and the schools they went to. We had been looking at toys, schools etc., from the past in our own topic so it was very interesting to see all the work P5/6 and P6 had done.

Thursday 7th of March was World Book Day. We all came into school dressed as a character from a book. There was Harry Potter, Rapunzel, Spiderman, the Gruffalo, the Lion King etc., all in class.  Even some of the teachers dressed up as their favourite character!

We also wrote about our favourite character.

It is also Mothers Day on Sunday so we made a card to give to our Mummy. It was a card of three parts and we had to use our best hand writing, our best colouring and our best cutting out to make sure we did  the best job we could for our Mums‘. What do you think?

Ruby Bear

Hello there and welcome to P1’s blog!

We have continued to revise all our sounds and to practise putting the sounds together to make words. This can be quite tricky to begin with so we will be continuing to do this for several weeks so that we become really, really good at blending our sounds and hearing the words they make.

Our teachers introduced money to us this week. We made a mind map of all the things we knew about money already. We looked at coins. We looked at the size, shape and colour of the different coins. We pegged up all the different coins onto our washing line starting with the lowest value, a 1p coin,  going all the way up to a £2.oo coin! Miss Simpson also tipped all the coins from the tray onto the floor, mixed them all up in a right mess and we had to tidy them up and sort them into the correct trays! If this was not tricky enough we also had the large 5 minute timer and had to finish the job before the sand ran out in the timer! Phew! It was hard work but great fun!

We read the Ruby Bear story. It’s a story about a bear who is very special indeed. We talked about all the the things that made Ruby different but very special. We had a picture of Ruby and we labelled all the things that made her stand out from all the other bears; squint mouth, orange eyes, spotty tummy etc. We also painted our own Ruby with Mrs Lynch. We think, just like Ruby, our bears are very special.

As it is Mother’s Day on Sunday we made our own Mother’s Day cards. We all thought that our mummys worked very hard and deserved a treat so we made our cards with a cup on them and popped a tea bag in so they can relax with a nice cup of tea!

We are looking at the different things that keep us healthy. This week we made a healthy drink with Mrs Johnston. We made a fruit smoothie. We looked at all the ingredients needed to make this and next week we will be writing all the ingredients down. Our smoothies were delicious!

Last Week of Term

Hello again and welcome to Longhaugh Primary P1 blog!

We started this week by discussing our trip to Montrose Basin. We did two pieces of writing. On our first piece we wrote 2 sentences about the train journey to Montrose and what we saw from the train.

The second piece of writing was all about our time at Montrose Basin and all the things we found on the mud flats.

We continued with our topic of Grannies and Grandads this week. We looked at toys from the past and toys we play with today. We sorted the toys into hoops, one for toys from the past and one for toys we play with today. We discovered that some of the toys that our grandparents played with, we still play with today (skipping ropes, hoola hoops etc), so we had to have a third hoop filled with toys that were both old and new!

We played with some of the older toys and we had great fun. They are going to be in our classroom so we will have the chance to play with them again.

As it is Mother’s Day on Sunday we have been doing lots of craft activities. We painted our hands and put our hand prints on card with a very special poem on it.

We made love hearts out of clay and wrote ‘Mum’ on them. We then painted them with bright, glittery paint and put a ribbon on them.

On Friday we had a craft afternoon and Mrs Adams, Miss Simpson and Mrs Lynch helped us to make Easter pictures, Easter bonnets and Easter bunnies.

          Spring Lamb

          Easter Bunny

         Easter Bonnet

Although we’ve been very busy doing all sorts of craft we have still been working hard revising all our sounds and words, reading our reading books, continuing to work hard in our addition to 10 and revising our number doubles.

All of the children in P1, Mrs Adams, Miss Simpson and Mrs Lynch wish you all a very restful 2 week spring holiday and we look forward to seeing you all again on the week beginning 18th April!
