Gunpowder, Treason and Plot!

Hello there! A short week for us here at Longhaugh Primary school as the school is shut Thursday and Friday to pupils for staff in-service training.

We learned our last sound this week. The sound is ‘ar‘. The action for ‘ar’ is to open your mouth as if the doctor is looking at your throat and say, ‘ar,ar,ar,ar,ar’.

                             

We have learned a total of 39 sounds! Can you believe that? We think we are pretty amazing managing to learn all those sounds already!!

We have also been looking at the alphabet this week. We know that letters have a sound and a name. Now that we have learned all our Jolly Phonic sounds we are learning all the names of their matching capital letters. We have been singing alphabet songs to help us remember.

              

We were working again this week with Luke. He’s been helping us to use the number tracks and number lines He’s also been helping us to count on 2 more and 3 more.

              

As it was Bonfire Night on Monday we talked about what we would do/not do to keep ourselves safe if we went to see the bonfire and fireworks displays. We also made our own rockets and firework pictures.

  

 

This Sunday is Rememberence Sunday. We won’t be at school that day but we talked about the men and women we will be remembering, why we wear a poppy and what a poppy represents. A few of us in school had family and friends who have served or are serving in the armed forces. We all agreed it was very important to remember all the men and woman who had died serving their country.

Who is the tallest? Who is the smallest? P1 know the answer!

Hello everyone, welcome back to Longhaugh Primary 1’s Blog!

We have learned another 4 sounds this week. They are ‘z’, ‘w’, ‘ng’ and ‘v’.

              

                  

Our favourite action was ‘ng’. We had to pretend we were a weight lifter lifting a dumb bell and say, “ng,ng,ng.”

We have been using lots of different materials this week to make our sounds. Dylan even made ‘ng’ from our construction blocks. Well done Dylan! We’ve also been using our sounds to make words.

  

We also used shaving foam to practise writing the sound ‘z’ and ‘z’ words.

              

We also enjoy learning together and working in pairs and in teams. Here we worked together to build a wall of words.    

                        

This week in maths we were comparing size and looking at the language we need to use when we talk about size; biggest, smallest, taller, smaller, fat, thin, etc. We also did activities that made us think about the language we use. We saw who could throw the furthest, who could get the most beanbags into a hoop. We put our classmates in order by height. We cut out pictures and put them in the correct order starting with the tallest and ending with the smallest.

              

                  

In P1A this week we were junk modelling making pirate ships. We had to think what a pirate ship would need and see if we could find the correct shaped box, tube, carton etc., to make it. We think Captain Hook and Peter Pan would be rather pleased with our efforts.

              

In P1C we were also junk modelling but this time we were making Rapunzel’s castle. This time we had to think what a castle looked like. Would it need towers? Would it need turrets? Another very good job done! We are becoming junk modelling Kings and Queens!!

              

In 1B this week we made crowns for  Sleeping Beauty’s wedding. We designed our own crowns using jewels, sequins and feathers. We think we will look very regal at the wedding.

              

We also looked at an extract from the story and we worked in pairs to look for a certain sound in the text. When we found that sound we coloured it in with a pencil. We all did a splendid job!

              

In gym this week we went outside and used hoola hoops. We had to use our hoops in lots of different ways. We rolled them, we skipped with them, we jumped over them and we threw them. We also had to use different parts of our body to swing the hoop. This certainly was much trickier than it sounds!!

Patterns All Around

Hi there and welcome back to our blog!

It’s all go here in P1 at Longhaugh Primary School and we’re constantly learning and discovering new things.

We learned another 4 sounds this week, they were ‘l’, ‘f’, ‘b’ and ‘ai’. Our favourite Jolly Phonics action was ‘l’ where we pretend we are licking a lolly…..yum!

               

               

We have been continuing with lots of sounds games and activities.

  

We’ve been re-capping our numbers to 10 this week and we will continue to do that but we also looked at pattern. We walked around our class rooms looking to spot different patterns. We sorted out patterns on the interactive white board and we copied patterns using beads and cubes. We even made some patterns of our own. We’re on the lookout for all sorts of patterns, I wonder how many we’ll be able to find?

              

  

In our topic work this week we were looking at the characters in our stories. We looked at what makes a good character and what makes a bad character. Our teacher gave us a character and we listened to the story and we had to shout out a phrase when we heard our characters name.

We have also been thinking about the role play areas in our class rooms and what we would like to see there and what we would need to make it. P1a have been making Captain Hook’s pirate ship and thinking about all the things a pirate ship needs. P1B and P1c have made a castle in their class rooms and had to think what a castle looked like and what a castle needs to make it look like a castle. We had to do a lot of thinking!! This was definately an ‘extra hard thinking’ week!!

Part Timers no more….

This is our last week of being in school only in the mornings. From Monday we are here all day and we’re all excited and ready to be full time school boys and girls!!

We continued to learn new sounds this week and we learned ‘e’, ‘h‘, ‘r’ and ‘m’. Our favourite sound action was ‘r’. We had to pretend we were a puppy who was pulling his rag in his mouth and say ‘rrrrrrr’.

              

              

We have been practising our sounds in lots of different ways. We have been using the ipad, matching sounds, using our sounds bibs and practising on our whiteboards.

  

           

We also learned the numbers 5, 6, 7, and 8. We have been singing lots of number rhymes and songs. We have been making  numbers out of playdough and matching digits and pictures that are the same, e.g., 5 dots, 5 lines, the number 5 and a 5p. We’ve been practising writing our numbers on our whiteboards. This can be tricky as some of the numbers aren’t easy to master!

  

              

              

At the end of each week we look in our planners and decide how we have felt our learning has gone. If we felt it has gone well and we found our jobs quite easy we colour in the green traffic light. If we felt things were ok but we found some of the jobs a little bit tricky we colour in the orange traffic light. If we thought our jobs were really quite difficult and we needed lots of help with them we colour in the red traffic light. We all coloured in the traffic lights green or orange as we are all smart cookies and managed all our sounds and number jobs really well.

              

As we will be in school for a full day on Monday, we had an early school lunch to familiarise ourselves with the dinner hall and what we will have to do when we go for lunch next week. We all had a lovely lunch and a very big thank you to the cook and the dinner ladies who helped us!

Numbers, Numbers All Around, Numbers All Around!

Hello and welcome back to the second P1 blog of this new school year!

We are so busy in P1 even though we are still only in school for the morning.

We learned 4 new sounds this week. They were ‘n’, ‘p’, ‘i’ and ‘ck’. When we are learning our sounds, we sing the Jolly Phonics song and do the matching action to help us remember them.

The action for ‘n’ is to stretch our arms out wide and pretend we’re an aeroplane and say, “nnnnnn”. The action for ‘p’ is to put our finger to our lips pretending our finger is a candle and blow the candle out saying, “ppppp”. The action for ‘i’ is to put our hands at either side of our face wiggling our fingers like whiskers and say, “iiiiii”. the action for ‘c’ is to click our fingers like castanets and for ‘k’ to wave our hand in the air like a kite flying in the sky.

We’ve also been making our new sounds using playdough, playing sound games on the interactive whiteboard, finding sounds in the sand and practising writing our sounds on our whiteboards.

We’ve also learned the numbers ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘4′ this week. We have been listening to number stories and singing number songs and rhymes. We have been doing lots of number activities. We have been matching numbers on our teddy bear number washing line, we have been throwing bean bags and balls into coloured hoops, but we had to make sure we matched the correct colour and the correct number to the correct hoop! Trickier than it looks!

We also cut strips of paper very carefully and glued them together to make the number ‘4’.

We also went outside to do some investigating and see how many ‘number’ things we could find. We think we did very well indeed. We found 1 bin and 1 tree. We found 2 arrows on 2 doors and 2 stones. We found 3 trees and 3 coloured spots on the playground. We found 4 picnic benches and 4 boys and girls. We are wonderful number detectives!

We also painted our portraits with Mrs Lynch this week. We had to think about the colour of our hair and our eyes and put our features all in the right place. They will be going up in our corridor wall and everyone will know who we all are in P1!

The Start of a New School Year

Hello everyone!! Welcome back to Longhaugh Primary 1’s blog. It’s lovely to be back at school and this year in primary 1 we are welcoming 46 new children.

We have all settled in very well in our first week here at Longhhaugh Primary and we have already been working very hard.

We learned 3 new sounds in our first week. We learned ‘s’, ‘a’ and ‘t’. We also learn songs and actions to go along with our sounds, this makes our learning fun and it’s much easier to remember them too.

The action for ‘s’ is to move your hand as if it was a snake. The action for ‘a’ is to move your hand up and down your opposite arm as if ants are crawling up your arm and the action for ‘t’ is to move your head from side to side as if you are watching a tennis match.

  

We hope you will be practicing doing these actions when saying the sounds, because we will be practising.

We practised writing our sounds on our whiteboards and we made a ssssnake using tissue paper.

  

We looked at colours this week too and sorted coloured objects into coloured hoops. We also looked at colour words. These words were printed in their coloured ink and also in black ink. It was quite tricky to match up the words and put them into the correct hoop.

  

              

We also had a walk around our school to get to know the other adults and the important places we will be visiting e.g. the gym hall, the assembly hall and the dinner hall.

  

We also got our blue homework packets home this week. It has our daily planner in it. Our teacher writes all the things that our parents/carers need to know and if we have any homework it is also written in our planner. We need to bring our blue packets to school every day.

The Primary 1 school day ends at 12.15pm lunchtime for the first 3 weeks. They will be in a full school day, coming back in the afternoon and finishing at 3.15pm from Monday 3rd September 2012.

Mid Term

Hello and welcome everyone! A short week at school this week as we are closed to pupils on Thursday for staff in-service training and also on Friday and Monday for the mid term holiday!

We learned our last sound this week, we have learned 40 sounds in total! Wow! This week’s sound was ‘ar’.             

The action for ‘ar’ is to open your mouth as if the doctor is checking your throat and say ‘ar,ar,ar,ar’.

              

This week in our number work we have continued to practise recognising and writing our numbers to 10, ordering them and finding the number before, after and in between. We have, however, also been learning our number doubles and near doubles.

         

In our water topic this week we did a “waterproof and not waterproof” experiment. We  had an object  each and we tested it in the water to see if it was waterproof or not waterproof. We found out that a raincoat was waterproof as the water just ran off but woolly socks, although they would keep us warm, were not waterproof and they soaked up the water. We recorded our findings on a sheet.

  

We also looked at another sea creature this week. We read a factual book about an octopus. We found out they have 8 legs called tentacles and they squirt ink when they feel threatened. They do this to scare off other creatures that want to attack them. Miss simpson made a playdough octopus and put it into a glass bowl filled with water. She then squirted ink into the water just as an octopus would do if it got scared. The ink transformed the water and the octopus was completely hidden!

  

We made our own Octopus by tearing and sticking pieces of paper on to a plastic cup, then curling paper strips and gluing them on to make the 8 legs.

  

We read the Lighthouse Keeper’s Picnic and added this to our storybook chain. We drew a picture about this story and wrote a sentence in our thinking books.

The Lighthouse Keeper

Hello everyone!

Apologies that there wasn’t a P1 blog  last week, Mrs Lynch was ill and unfortuately wasn’t able to post any of our news. Here is a brief snapshot of what we learned last week:

We learned the sounds ‘ou’ and ‘oi’. In our number work we continued to use our ladybird maths box and coat hangers and pegs to help us with our adding. Our teachers introduced our new water topic and we talked about lighthouses and how they help ships in very stormy waters. We talked about the Bell Rock lighthouse that is near us and we watched a power point. We will be reading the ‘Lighthouse Keepers’ books and Mr Gringling, the lighthouse keeper, left his large wellies in our classroom!! Each of the classes made a lighthouse for their room. We also read the Rainbow Fish and cut out scales from shiny paper and stuck them on to our fish.

Now on to this week.

We learned the sounds ‘ue’ and ‘er’ this week.

              

The action for ‘ue’ is to point your finger at people and say, ‘ue,ue,ue,ue.’ The action for ‘er’ is to roll your hands round and around each other as if they were a mixer and say ‘er,er,er,er.’

              

In number we met Luke and the lily pads again and he helped us with place value. We worked on ordering numbers and finding the number before, after and in between. We also used our Teddy Bear washing lines to help us with this too.

We still continued to work on our addition but this time we were using a number line, and……we are getting very good at it!

This week in our water topic we did a floating and sinking experiment. Our teachers gave us lots of objects. We talked about what they were made of and we had to predict whether we thought they would float or sink. After the experiment we recorded our findings on a sheet.

  

We read a factual book about sea creatures, specifically star fish and we learned how many legs they have and that their mouths are on the bottom of the starfish and not on the top. We made a star fish by tearing and scrunching tissue paper and carefully gluing it on.

  

In health this week we looked at healthy eating and the foods that are good for us and give us energy and the foods that are not so good. We designed a healthy sandwich for Mr Gringling, the lighthouse keeper. We drew the filling and then wrote what we had chosen for him.

Two Letters Arrive!

A very warm welcome back to Longhaugh Primary 1’s blog.

This week we learned another 2 sounds. They were ‘th’ and ‘qu’.

              

The action for ‘th’ is to stick your tongue out and pretend you are a cheeky clown and say “th,th,th.” The action for ‘qu’ is to open and shut your hands pretending they are a ducks beak  and say ‘qu,qu,qu.’

              

We have continued using the ladybird maths box and divided circles this week helping us with our addition to 10. We have also used our flip flop books. They are very clever books that help us work our the different number stories to 10 when we fold them in different ways.

  

In the Land of Me this week we received 2 special letters. The first one was from Yama San, the monkey. He invited us to look at shape, size and colour with him. We changed Buddy Boo, Willow and Eric into different objects. We played a game of pretend and play and talked about what we would look like if we changed our shape, or our size, or our colour. We drew our ideas in our thinking books. 

   

Our second letter was from Anthony the aardvark. He and his ants live in the desert and build lots of things using lots of different materials. He invited us to try and build things with him using all sorts of materials, e.g., a castle made from jelly! We discovered that some materials are no use for building. We found out that a pedalo made from paper would sink in the water. That’s no use. We drew our own pictures. Some of us drew things made from strong building materials like brick and wood and some of us drew pictures of buildings made from jelly or custard or something very silly.

Your child has received a copy of the scottish poem, “Pussie at the Fireside”. Please help your child to learn this poem.

“We Three Kings”

Welcome back to our last full week at school before the Christmas holidays.

This time of year is very busy and we have been fighting colds and sickness bugs to get all our activities done!

We learned 2 sounds this week, they were ‘ng’ and ‘oo’.

                       

The action for ‘ng’ is to pretend you are a weight lifter and push your  hands above your head as if your were lifting a dumb bell and say, ‘ng ng ng ng’. The action for ‘oo’ is to move the top half of you body backwards and forwards mimicing a cuckoo coming in and out of a cuckoo clock and say ‘oo oo oo oo’.

              

We continued working with our ladybird maths box again this week, this time working on the stories of 8. We used playdough spots on the ladybirds then wrote our number stories on our white boards.

We received another letter this week from Buddy Boo, Eric and Willow from the Land of Me. They thanked us for taking them on so many wonderful adventures and that they will see us after the holidays. They are going back to Bramble Woods and are getting ready for winter there. It is very cold and they set us a challenge. We had to design winter clothes for Buddy Boo, Eric and Willow to wear and Granny Olive was to judge the best designs!

We still had some Christmas craft to finish and we made our Christmas cards and our calenders. As you can see we made a very good job of both!

  

  

Finally, this week we performed our nativity, “We Three Kings” to our families. We had 2 fully booked performances and everyone thought we did a splendid job. Everyone remembered their lines and the singing was fantastic! Our parents and families joined us after the performance for a cup of tea/coffee and mince pie in the dinner hall.

  

Well done P1a, P1b and P1c of Longhaugh Primary School, you are all stars!
