All They’re Doing Is Splashing, Right?
Wrong! Water play fosters learning in all developmental areas. It provides opportunities for children to experiment with math and science concepts, strengthen their physical skills, advance their social and emotional skills, and enhance language development.

Campfires

Yesterday we made campfires with Ms Connor. First we talked about how to stay safe and discussed what campfire rules we had to follow. (We are learning how to manage risks independently). Next we lit our fire using firelights, sticks and a match. The we cooked popcorn. Ms Connor let us see what the popcorn looked like before it was cooked. When it was cooked we all had some to try. Most of us thought it tasted yummy!!! We can’t wait to do this again

BUG HOTEL

The nursery boys and girls helped create a bug hotel outside today. We had to gather lots of sticks (different lengths and thickness) leaves, seeds, branches etc. We worked together with Ms Connor to create a place that we hope lots of insects and bugs will love to come and stay.

Body Percussion

Over the last few week as part of BBC 10 pieces we have been listening to Anna Meredith’s music. She makes music using body percussion. We’ve been making music too by clapping, stamping, clicking and shouting. We watched an orchestra play some of Anna music. Here is a link to another of her pieces. Our sparkle words were a capella (music without instruments), title, audience, body percussion and composer.

Music BBC Ten Pieces

The boys and girls in the nursery are involved in The BBC Ten Pieces.

About BBC Ten Pieces

Ten Pieces is an exciting new initiative for nursery & primary schools, led by BBC Learning and the BBC Performing Groups, focusing on classical music and creativity.

When?

Ten Pieces will run over a school year. Starting in the autumn term 2014 , the project will culminate in a major celebratory finale in the summer of 2015.

 Why?

Ten Pieces aims to open up the world of classical music to children – and inspire them to develop their own creative responses to the pieces through music, dance or digital art. The repertoire includes a range of music from baroque to contemporary.

We have been listening to Mussorgsky: A Night on the Bare Mountain. If you would like to listen to this piece of music, here is a link to it.

We have been learning about  music through sparkle words. Our sparkle words are composer, conductor, tempo, fanfare, orchestra and notes. We have been learning to keep the beat with the orchestra with our egg shakers and moving to the music with coloured scarves.

Supertato

We are currently reading  “Supertato” in nursery as part of our Literacy programme ABC and Beyond. This story is about an “evil” pea who escapes from the freezer one night and is mean to lots of vegetables. He is finally stopped by “Supertato” -a superhero potato. The children have been very busy exploring different activities relating to this story, Vegetable printing at art, setting up a supermarket for roleplay, threading/counting vegetables/fruit, trying different vegetables at snack, going on a pea hunt in the sand tray, catching all the peas, carrots and potatoes in the water tray, learned songs/rhymes and action songs, making models at playdough etc. Each group has also been discussing, explaining, re-inforcing and extending the children knowledge and understanding of the sparkle words: icy, rescue, super & distress during group times. Some of the children made models of “Supertato”.

OUTDOOR LEARNING PEEP SESSIONS

We will be running 4 consecutive outdoor learning PEEP sessions starting January 28th at 10:00-11:15. These session will have an outdoor learning theme. Your child’s key worker will be handing out  an information flyer. If you and your child would like to attend please return the tear off slip by Friday 23rd January. As these PEEP session will be outdoors please wear old clothes and suitable outdoor clothes/footwear. Each session will begin with a quick chat about what we will be doing, then outside for activity, we will then come inside where you will have the opportunity to fill in a page in your child’s diary (each child will create a diary over the 4 weeks to keep) and depending on time we will finish with a story and/or song. If you have any questions or would like anymore information please see Ms Connor (Orange Group) or Mrs McGlone (HT).
