We held a Wear It Pink day at school today in aide of Cancer Research Uk. We each donated 50p and in return we got a pink ribbon to show our support and we got to wear our own pink clothes or play clothes. We did really well and raised a wonderful £147 ! We even got a tweet from Cancer Reasearch to thank us all!
Fit Friday – September 2013
Wowee!
We are all feeling very fit and healthy after our first Fit Friday of the year! We all had a range of activities to do with our classes and everyone got to try at least one health and wellbeing activity. The upper school were having taster sessions in basketball and hockey. They also met with the school nurse to discuss different aspects of healthy living. The younger boys and girls had a visit from the Play on Wheels Bus which gives them the opportunity to explore a range of resources and build on their imaginative play, co-operation skills as well as their fitness and balance. They also got a surprise when the local Firefighters came to visit us in the afternoon. We were very grateful to Firefighter Gorge who gave us a talk and showed us all the different parts of the fire engine, Firefighter Scott who ‘helped’ us use the very powerful fire hose and also to Firefighters Ewen and Steve who showed us what all the equipment inside the cab of the fire engine was. It was brilliant!
The whole school is looking forward to their next Fit Friday in November (please see diaries, twitter and our website calendar for details).
Primary 1 are here full time!
We have all loved meeting our new Primary One pupils and we are thrilled that they are now at school full time. Coming to school full time means lots of exciting things can happen including coming to school for lunch although we can go home with an adult if that suits better. To get the P1 boys and girls and their families used to what will happen we had a family lunch day for everyone. It was very tasty and everyone enjoyed their chosen food. When we go to school dinners we can choose from three options. Now that we are here full time we are all enjoying being with our friends and eating our school dinner and packed lunches.
P7 Activities and Dalguise Week
Primary 7 have had a fun start to the new term by going on their adventure week to Dalguise Outdoor Activity Centre. They all had a brilliant (but exhausting) week with Mrs Bradbury, Mr Robertson and Mrs Bell. All the activities meant that we had to use lots of skills and we learnt lots of new ones too. The activities ranged from raft building to archery… they were all fun!
Artist Donation
We have been very lucky to have had a donation of a print to our Library. Shonna Bucaroff is an artist who lives in San Diego in the United States. When Mrs Munro was helping set up the Library she contacted Shonna to ask permission to use an image from her website. http://twistedfigures.blogspot.co.uk/
The image is entitled READING IS DREAMING WITH OPEN EYES.
Mrs Munro felt this would fit perfectly into our new Library. Shonna asked that instead of just using the image she would send us one of her prints of this image free of charge. All the way from the USA.
A huge thank you to Shonna and the print now has pride of place in our Library.
Revamped Library
Our Library has had a bit of a revamp!
We now have lots of areas in our Library and the whole school got to visit the Library on Thursday 23rd May to see what it had to offer. It has a Library Activities area where there are word searches, colouring in sheets, book activity sheets and blank paper for drawing favourite characters or creating our own.
There is a Comic Zone. Here you will find comics, annuals, magazines, Beano and Dandy and more and last but not least Graphic Novels. At the moment we only have a few Graphic Novels but we are hoping to fundraise to get some more.
The ActivTable with lots of learning content to support pupils and extend learning taking place in the classroom.
A Listening Centre. At the moment we have a small selection of tapes and books but we hope that through our fundraising we will raise enough funds to buy some CDs and books.
A Promethean Board. We have a board now in our library area and this will give teachers the opportunity to deliver lessons to small groups of children or for children to practise their literacy skills through using the board.
A Story Corner area. A cosy story corner area for children to cosy down and read a book.
A multicultural area where we will have a diverse range of books and materials that will celebrate the cultures within our school.
And lastly…the Library area where children can browse for fiction or non-fiction books and sit and read or work at the table area.
When everyone visited the Library on Thursday they all wrote down their favourite book and we made an amazing display of the whole school’s favourite books. We are hoping to make sure that we can add all these books to our Library as soon as we can.
This Friday 31st May we will be having a Book Sale to raise funds for new books for our Library. We need to bring in old books in good condition from home and then the Librarians will see these on Friday afternoon to raise money to buy some new books, CDs and Graphic Novels. Any donations welcome. Please hand into the main reception of the school by Friday 31st May.
The ActivTable Arrives at Dens Road
AMAZING!
The ActivTable has arrived at Dens Road PS and everyone is very excited to get their hands on it. It has lots of activities pre-loaded on it and our IT department have been working hard to make sure we can access as much as possible from this amazing Table. It will take pride of place in our newly revamped library which will be open very soon to pupils. The School’s Digital Leaders are currently training up on how to add pupils and open the activities and they will be showing our new P6 Digital Leaders how to do this so they can take things forward in the new school year.
Watch out for more information about how we will be using the ActivTable to support our learning.
New Roles as P6 Digital Leaders
This week has been a busy one for our Digital Leaders at Dens Road Primary. They have been involved in the recruitment of Primary 6 Digital Leaders. These new Digital Leaders will support our Nursery with their Blog and their SMART board. They will also be responsible for supporting P3 with ICT. Our current Digital Leaders interviewed all the interested primary 6 pupils, and there were lots of them! They then discussed who they felt had the best skills for the jobs based on their experience of being a Digital Leader. Our new appointments are as follows…
Nursery Blog Support
Kade, Jake and Kaylah
Nursery SMART board support
Ronan, Abdul Samad, Noam and Kaitlyn
P3 ICT support
Darren, Anna, Kelsey and Drew
Well done to all who took part in the interview process. There was lots of butterflies in tummies!
All of the successful candidates take up their new responsibilities next week.
Using QR Codes
The school have recently created a QR code which you can use to take you directly to our School Website.
If you scan this code with a SMART phone which has a QR code app this will open our school website.
All children should have a sticker with the QR code on their Homework Diary. This will give you quick and easy access to find our school website.
Happy scanning!
Infant Christmas Show – A Little Nativity
This year the children from the Infant classes have been learning songs and words for their show for a long time. This has helped us also learn about the Christian story of Christmas and learning how to perform to an audience. Our show is called A Little Nativity. We have angels, stars, sheep, shepherds, wise men, a donkey, innkeepers and Mary and Joseph. We learned the story of Christmas and the baby Jesus which helped us understand why we were doing our Show. Lots of parents and carers came to watch it and we hope they had a great time. We did!
