Question Marks and Exclamation Marks

This week we have been learning about punctuation. WALT told use we were learning to find questions marks and exclamation marks and speech bubbles.

We have talked about why the author might put some marks on the page and that these marks help us when we are reading the story. We used the Promethean Board to rub out and find the question mark, exclamation mark and a speech bubble.

We looked at the Three Little Pigs book and Mrs Munro read it to us. We had to find the exclamation marks and the question marks on the page. We found lots of exclamation marks in the book we looked at!

Then we had some question mark shapes and exclamation mark shapes that we made using some beans. We worked with a friend to help us learn.

We drew some question marks and some exclamation marks on the Promethean Board too!

Characters

This week we have been learning about the characters in a story. Our WALT was We are Learning to think about characters in a story. Our WILF was listening to each other’s ideas, talking about the three little pigs and talking about the wolf.

Mrs Munro clicked on the first little pig and up popped the first little pig. He told usĀ that he likes to build houses and his favourite material is straw. Click on the link to watch the VOKI.

We had lots of ideas about the first little pig character.

Then we clicked on the second little pig character. Up he popped and he told us that he likes to build houses using sticks. Click on the link to watch the VOKI.

We had lots of ideas about the second little pig character.

Then the third little pig character popped up. He told us that he loves bricks. He also likes making houses but they must be strong . Click on the link to watch the VOKI.

We had lots of ideas about the third little pig.

Then the big bad wolf popped up. He was a bit scary. He said he liked to blow down houses and eat pigs. Click on the link to watch the VOKI.

We had lots of great ideas for the wolf character.

We told everyone about our favourite character from the three little pigs story and why we liked that character the best. Then we drew a picture of our character and Mrs Munro asked us what our characters was saying. She wrote it on a speech bubble for us and wee stuck it on our picture. I think you will agree some of our wolves look very scary!

Letter And Word’s

This week we have been learning all about letters and words. Mrs Munro told us all about WALT and WILF who help us learn. WALT told us that we were learning to tell the difference between a letter and a word. WILF told us what Mrs Munro wanted us to do. We had to look at the letter or word, talk about it and sort it.

We all got a turn to come up to the Promethean Board and move a letter or a word into the correct place. We had to wait our turn and listen carefully. We also had to help each other too.

Then Mrs Munro had a bag with lots of letters and words that were all mixed up. We had to sort them out for her. We went round the circle and took turns. We were really good and telling the difference between a letter and a word. The letter is all by itself and the word is letters joined together. We even counted to see how many letters were in a word. Chimney is a long word, it has seven letters in it. Pig is a short word, it only had three letters in it.

Putting a Story in Order

This week we have been learning to put the three little pigs story in the correct order because if you don’t put a story in the correct order,it doesn’t make sense!

Ā We used a Promethean board flipchart to drag the pictures into the correct order, then we told the story again to make sure we were right.

We also matched some words to the pictures. We found short words and long words. Our last page was magic! There was a magic looking glass that found words hidden in the picture, we found lots of them.

Thinking Skills

This week we watched a YouTube clip of Three Little Pigs.Ā  It was really funny and at the end of the film the wolf got a very hot bottom by falling into a big pot of hot water. We had to use super listening skills and looking skills during the film. You can watch a the film again by clicking on this YouTube link.

Mrs Munro then asked us questi0ns. She showed us a triangle that she called a thinking triangle. The thinking triangle was lots of different colours. We had to use super thinking skills which made our brains work really hard.

Then we had questions to answer. Here are some of the questions and some of our answers.

We said Straw!

Harley – Because it was too strong.

Rabeeah – Because there was glue on it.

Lennon and Nairn – Because it has cement.

We pretended to be the big bad wolf and Mrs Munro pretended to be the little pigs. We had to blow her house down with a great big huff and puff.

Mhairi – the big bad wolf was gonna trick the three little pigs to eat the three little pigs.

Harley – Cos he want to eat the piggies.

Nairn – Cos he thinks to get in the house.

Jamie M – Cos he is in disguise.

Sean – I want a brick house cos I like the bricks.

Lucas – Straw

Sean – the wolf would easily blow down your house.

Lucas – I would run to Sean and Nairn’s house.

Harley – Bricks and stones cos I don’t want my house blown down.

Rayyan – Bricks. Cos the big b ad wolf couldn’t come in my house and get me.

Macy – I would eat him in wolf soup.

Richard – I would like him to die so the three little pigs would be safe.

Rayyan – I want the big bad wolf to drop his phone number on a piece of paper and the pigs to find the phone number and phone his mum and dad to come and get him.

Please leave a comment and let us know what you are telling everyone at home about the three little pigs.

Three Little Pigs Wall Display

This week in the nursery we made a wall display of the three little pigs, We made a house from actual straw, a house from lollipop sticks and we couldn’t use bricks for the third house so we used cardboard and painted it to look like bricks.

We did a puppet show with the three little pigs and the big bad wolf and we enjoyed it.

We also put on masks and acted out the story.

In the Active Learning Zone we looked at the six books we have been reading. We had to pick our favourite book and we had to think about why we like it. We recorded our ideas on a recordable speech bubble.

Then we looked at our 3 Little Pigs Floor book. We looked at the pictures we took last week. Then we found our name and stuck it in the book beside our favourite book.

Bits Of The Book

We haveĀ  been learning about the title, Author and Illustrator in a book. We found out that the Author writes the story, the Illustrator draws the beautiful pictures and the title is the name of the book. We looked at the back of the book and found the blurb. The blurb tells us a little bit about whats inside the book. We thoughtĀ  ‘blurb’ was quite a funny word. We looked inside the book at the pictures. We found pictures of the characters in theĀ story. The characters are The Three Little Pigs andĀ the BIG BAD WOLF!

We have a floor book – In our floor book we have pictures of what we have been learning.

These are some of the quotes that the morning children said:

“I know what a fairytale is. Where other people live like ponies, Red Riding Hood’s and Grandma’s” -Ebony

“I have a fairytale. I know Rapunzel.” -Ceylina

“It’s a book about fairytales.” -Lennon

“Is it a speech bubble?” -Richard

“It’s an oval.” -Ilma

In the afternoon we looked at a different Three Little Pigs Book. We took pictures of all the parts of the book again. Here they are…

Here is some of the quotes they afternoon children said…

“He’s not afraid of the Big Ā Bad Wolf!” – Wayne

“The wolf wants to eat them!” – Raffay

“There’s writing in the book.” – Jamie

“That’s a speech bubble.” – Krystal

Story Tellers

We got a surprise and had to solve clue’sĀ about the three little pigs. We have looked at different Ā Three Little Pig story videos and we are also starting to read different three little pigs stories. Here are all the books that we are finding out about.

Mystery Letter

The Nursery children came into nursery and found a letter. The letter was addressed to the boys and girls. It asked them to solve the clues. Inside the box there was a pig, a hammer, a toolbox, straw, a brick, a stick and a number 3. They had to think why someone left these clues. We talked about what stories might have a pig and the number 3 in it. We decided that it must have been the 3 little pigs that wrote the letter. We are going to be investigating the story of the 3 little pigs.

These are some of the quotes by the children.

“What is the problem?”

“It is crunchy. It smells like hay”

“This is a bit scarey cosĀ I don’t know what the clue is?”

“It’s about a pig who’s three”

“The wolf’s got a big mouth”

“He eats the ones with the sticks and the straw house”

“The wolf’s face went red when he couldn’t blow the brick house down”

Dens Road Nursery Class

Hello world, welcome to our nursery blog.
We are one of the oldest nurseries in Dundee being established in 1938 to cater for the needs of the local community most of whom were employed in the Jute Mills.
We can offer 40 places in both the morning and afternoon for children between the ages of 3 and 5.
We have been having great fun over the last few weeks with our play experiences being about demolition and building, with many of the children experiencing the demolition of the Alexander Street Multis during the Summer.
