Back for another term!

We’re back again after a lovely two week break!

At the beginning of the week we were really excited because we had our photograph taken by the school photographer.   We hope to get our copy of the photo soon!

This term our new topic is The Animal Kingdom. We spoke about what we already knew about animals and what we would like to know, then we wrote some of our ideas on the board to help us decide what learning we would have to do this term.  It looks like we’ll be very busy!

We now have a noticeboard for any Animal News…so we’ll have to remember to cut out any news and pictures we find in newspapers or magazines about animals and bring it into school.

On Tuesday we were going to visit the DCA to see The Gruffalo’s Child but it was postponed until next week.  We decided to make Gruffalo masks anyway.    We also used paint pads to make prints of animals and their footprints.   Here are some we made for our wall display.

As part of our Animal Topic we are going to be acting out the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  We started learning some of the songs we’re going to sing in our play.  One is called the Bear Song and  it describes each of the bears who live in the cottage.  We have our own Goldilocks and the three bears to play with in our activity corner.

We also listened to a funny story about another bear called Douglas, who just wanted to find a big hug.  The story is called Hugless Douglas by David Melling.  Poor Douglas just couldn’t find the right hug until he went home to his mum at the end.  Aaah!   Next week we’ll listen to another story about Douglas.

In our activity area in the classroom we have a Shop where we can practise using money.  We have a till, plastic coins and matching activity cards.  We have to try to match up the coins with the correct amounts on the cards.  We also have lots of other numeracy and literacy games we can choose to play with.

We also like to play Money games on the computer on the Education City website.

In Literacy we read our new reading books and learned words with the –ea sound and -igh sound.  We  played a game called the Letter Wizard, using a ‘special’ apron with cards in the pocket.  We read out the word on the card to the rest of the class, then had to identify the letter the word began with so we could put the card into the correct alphabet pocket on the wall.  It was tricky but we managed to read all the cards and put them in the right place.  Well done!

We’re getting very good at our grammar and punctuation. One of the activities we do each week is to try to identify deliberate mistakes in writing.  Tyler-Jay was particularly impressive this week because he spotted not one… but two sentences that needed capital letters and full stops.  Wow!  So it was no surprise who our Star of the Week was this week….well done, Tyler-Jay.

As part of our Animal Topic, our group names are all different this term.  We now have –

  • The Happy Hedgehogs
  • The Running Rabbits, and
  • The Fantastic Foxes.

Our Group of the week with most points was The Happy Hedgehogs!  Hurray!

This term we are earning Marbles in our Class jar for good behaviour.  See how well we’ve done so far –

Once we have filled our jar we’ll get a class treat.  We talked about what treats we would like.  A lot of us thought a Pyjama day would be good….. or extra Golden Time …..or a class party….We’ll have to wait and see.

On Friday we had a special Halloween-themed tuck shop and we were allowed to come to school dressed up in Halloween outfits.  Here we are trying to look very scary!

We also had some fun in the afternoon dancing in our Halloween outfits.

We hope we’ll have some more Halloween fun next week ….so we’ve left our Halloween decorations up in the classroom.

More from us next week.  Bye for now from P2a.

Hurray -we’re off!

Hurray – we’re off for 2 weeks!

Before we came off we started the week in the gymhall when we were busy being giants again. We acted out the next part of The Smartest Giant in Town.  This time the Giant met some mice whose house had burned down so the Giant took off one of his new shoes and gave it to the mice for a new home.  We pretended we were the mice, then we had to be the Giant hopping around the hall with only one shoe on.  It was fun!

Later in the week, we spoke about our classroom rules and decided to make new posters for our walls to help us remember what our rules are.  We used photographs of ourselves to illustrate our rules.  Here are some of them –  Can you guess what our rules are by looking at our pictures?

1.  We put our hands up and don’t interrupt.  We work together quietly.

2.  We share and take turns.

3.  We line up quietly and don’t push or skip the queue.

4.  We move safely – We walk…we don’t run.

5.  We listen so we can all learn… and we do what we are asked first time.

6.  We look after our classroom and equipment.  We put things away.

7.  We sit nicely in our seats.

In Maths we had some fun with symmetry.  We had pictures showing only half an object.  To find out what the other half of the picture looked like we had to use mirrors.  Then we were able to see the rest of the picture reflected in the mirror so we could complete the whole picture. It was very tricky and we had to concentrate very hard.

We have all been working very hard in class this term…but we’ve also been busy at home doing our homework.  We all tried very hard and were pleased when we got a Homework Award on Friday for all our hard work.  Well done P2a!

The star of the week  is Amy.  The Rockets are Group of the Week.  Well done!  (We wonder what our new Group names will be next term???)

So after an exciting term learning all about Space, subtraction, lots of spelling, reading and writing, we’re now off to have a well-earned rest for a couple of weeks.  Yes, Leo we can all sit back and relax!

until Monday 22nd October when we’ll be back for more!  (We wonder what our new Topic will be next term???)

P2a look forward to sharing more news then…bye for now!

(Oh…..and remember to bring back  permission slips so we can all go to see The Gruffalo’s Child at the DCA on the 23rd!)
