# This week in P1HD

In Numeracy, we learned how to read and write the number 20 and made this amount in different ways, for example by stamping 20 times, identifying 20 on the number line, counting out 20 using the tens frames etc. We continued to develop our addition skills and used a variety of active strategies to find different ways to make an amount.

In Literacy, we consolidated all of the sounds we have learned so far. We were able to learn through various literacy activities, for example building CVC words on whiteboards, identifying rhyming words and playing matching games. We also wrote a set of instructions for the first time and it was called ‘How to make a spell’. This linked in with our new fairy tale, Cinderella.

In IDL, we read the story of Cinderella and based much of our learning around this. We took part in drama activities to help us understand the characters and we made predictions on what we thought might happen next in the story.

# This week in P1HD

In Numeracy, we learned how to read and write the number 19 and have had many opportunities to count within 20. We became more familiar with the part, part, whole method for addition and used this, alongside our cubes, to find different ways to make 6 and 7. We also continued to develop our data handling skills by going outside to find out the colour of the cars in our staff car park. We then made a bar graph to display these results.

In Literacy, we learned the sound ‘j’ and consolidated the sounds we have learned so far. We had opportunities to write  our taught sounds through an activity called ‘roll and write’. We also wrote an account of our soup making from last week and had to draw a detailed picture to match.

In Health and Wellbeing, we continued to learn about different ways to be a good friend. We discussed ways we could make others happy and were able to identify people who we had made happy that day.

# This week in P1HD

In Numeracy, we have been continuing to develop our skills in addition and were introduced to the ‘part, part, whole’ method. We really enjoyed using this as a different way to add numbers together. We also continued our work on data handling by carrying out another survey and then displaying this using a bar graph.

In Literacy, we learned three new sounds: l, f and b. We watched Geraldine the Giraffe and then created our own word wall for each sound. We also created a poster to encourage people to be safe around fireworks, making sure we used a full stop and finger spaces in our writing.

In IDL, we read a fairytale called The Enormous Turnip. We stopped at a particular point in the book and had to predict what might happen next, using the clues from the book so far. We also had great fun making and tasting our own turnip soup!

# This week in P1HD

In Numeracy, we have been learning to count, recognise and correctly form numbers to 20. We introduced the numbers 15 and 16 and used our new counting stick to count forwards and backwards from a given number within 20. We have also been learning to add basic amounts and have had lots of opportunities to use concrete materials to support this e.g. cubes and tens frames. We enjoyed carrying out a survey in other classes around the school to find out people’s favourite type of fruit and we recorded this on a tally chart and pictograph.

In Literacy, we learned two new sounds: o and u. We had lots of opportunities for word building and had to say, make, read and write CVC words, using our initial sounds. We also had various opportunities to discuss our likes and dislikes from the stories that we read, as part of our 3 Sharings, and even identified some things that puzzled us. In writing, we created a WANTED poster to help find the wicked witch from Hansel and Gretel. We also made our own sweetie houses from the story and used adjectives to describe them.

In Health and Wellbeing, we read a story called You Be You. This story is all about celebrating our differences and recognising that we are all unique. We designed our own fish using different lines and patterns, just like the ones from the story, to represent our differences.

In Numeracy, we have been learning to count, recognise and correctly form numbers to 10. We had lots of fun inviting parents/carers in to observe a numeracy lesson. We also identified basic 2D shapes and focused on a triangle, discussing its properties and where we may see it in the environment. We introduced numbers in between and used our number lines to help.

We showed parents how to count with the number lines and number fans.” – Faith

In Literacy, we learned three new sounds: e, h and r. We had lots of opportunities for word building and had to say, make, read and write CVC words, using our initial sounds. We also read our ORT 1st words books to Miss Duncan. In writing, we wrote a personal account called A Day Out.

In Health and Wellbeing, we read a story called The Grumpycorn and linked this into our Emotion Works. We identified the emotion word for the character and used words to describe his behaviours throughout the book. We drew pictures to illustrate good choices that he could have made in the story rather than shouting and throwing things.

In Numeracy, we have been consolidating numbers within 10 by practising our formation and playing counting games. We also made links with our homework and made some finger patterns, using both hands. We played a teddy bear game to help us visualise this. We even made some patterns using peg boards, beads, cubes and superhero pictures. We then learned how to use iPads to take pictures of our work as evidence.

In Literacy, we learned two new sounds: c and k. We had lots of opportunities for word building and had to say, make, read and write CVC words, using our satipn sounds. We had a formation station in our classroom where we could practice writing our names. We also each wrote a story called The Friendly Dragon, as this linked in with our Fairyland topic.

In Health and Wellbeing, we read a story called We are gentle…we don’t hurt others. We explored the story and discussed ways we could be gentle towards others.

In Numeracy, we read the story of 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and we practiced our number formation of these numbers both independently and with the teacher. We engaged in some counting games, including a game where we had to count dots on apples and put them in the correct fruit basket. We also revised numbers after and introduced numbers before, using a number line.

We were looking for numbers after and showed them on our number fans.” – Abigail

I liked finding the right card to put in the basket with a number on it.” – Sarah

In Literacy, we revised the sounds s, a, t, i, p and n. We began to build CVC words using these sounds for example sat, pan, tin etc. We also wrote basic sentences using our character names from the ORT books and drew pictures to match.

In Health and Wellbeing, we read a story called We work hard…we don’t waste time. We discussed the key points in a circle time activity and identified things we can do to look after our classroom.

In Numeracy, we read the story of 4 and 5 and we practiced our number formation of 0-5. We engaged in some counting games, including a game where we had to count the number of beats of the drum. We also looked at numbers after, using a number line.

In Literacy, we read more Biff, Chip and Kipper books during story time. We also learned new sounds: i, p and n and learned the Jolly Phonics actions. We had lots of opportunities to write these sounds around the classroom. We watched Geraldine the Giraffe clips on Youtube and identified words beginning with these sounds.

In Numeracy, we introduced some counting songs and practiced our number formation of 1, 2 and 3. We learned what  a pattern is and  began to continue some colour patterns.

In Literacy, we introduced the main characters in the Oxford Reading Tree books: Biff, Chip, Kipper, Mum, Dad and Floppy. We had opportunities to read and find these words. We also learned the sounds s, a, t and i, using Jolly Phonics.

In Numeracy, we have been learning to measure and compare lengths. We have been using non-standard units to do this, for example pens and gym shoes. We have also been consolidating our work on subtraction within 10.

In Literacy, we have been revising the sounds ch, air, j and fr. We realised that ‘ch’ and ‘air’ together made ‘chair’. We wrote a set of instructions titled How to draw a house.

For Health and Wellbeing, we continued to identify ways to stay safe. We looked at objects that are safe/ unsafe to touch and learned about staying safe around harmful substances (medicine).
