Primary 1EC

Week beginning 07.10.19

This week was a revision week for phonics P1EC. The children used active games and activities to consolidate their initial sounds. Our word building continues to progress with a lot of children developing in confidence when doing this independently.

For writing this week the children wrote an imaginative story about The Gingerbread Man’ Adventure. They came up with lots of super ideas.

‘The gingerbread man could go to a bakery.’ Hana

‘The gingerbread man could go to a wedding, he could marry a gingerbread girl’ Darcie

‘He could go to Asda’ Callen

‘The gingerbread man could go to the fun fayre.’ Jacob

The children are much more confident now at having a go at writing independently. The results are great!

On Thursday this week we started to look at addition. The children have picked this up very quickly. They are able to use pictures to help them complete simple addition sums. We used EducationCity and a game called Beach Holiday.

With Mrs Cuthbert we used the addition bus game and learned how to write out an addition sum using the + sign and the = sign.

‘I loved this game, can I play it again?’ Cooper

‘I know the + sign!’ Celestan

This week also look at estimation- we tried to make an sensible estimation of how many teddies we could see in the bags.

To go alongside our IDL topic of Fairyland we had planted our own beanstalk. The children have been learning how to care for it and what it needs to grow. Throughout the week Mrs Cuthbert has been doing a task with us. We had to label the different parts of a plant.

‘I know these are the roots’ Ryan M

The children were able to identify that plants needed the following things to help them grow:

  • Water
  • Sunlight
  • Somewhere warm

Melissa told us all about her swimming certificate that she was awarded. Great effort Melissa. Keep up the hard work!

This week all the children have had their learning journals updated. Please have a look with your child, there are 4 new observations, taken over the course of their first term in Primary 1.

Primary 1EC

Primary 1EC week beginning 30.09.19

We were very lucky this week to have a couple of different opportunities to have our parents and carers in the classroom working with us.

Numeracy and Maths:

This week saw the start of Maths Week Scotland. Our Numeracy Curriculum Workshop showcased some of the activities games we do in class.

We have been learning to correctly order and sequence numbers within 10 through filling in missing numbers on a number line. The children were given part of a number line and were to identify the missing numbers using taught strategies and then to select the correct number to place on the number line.

To consolidate and revise basic 2D shapes we made Shape Pizzas. We had to decide how many squares, rectangles, circles and triangles we wanted our pizza to have. We then needed to complete our recipe sheet. We needed to make sure that our recipe matched our finished pizza!

Literacy and IDL:

This week we learned three new sounds ‘e’, ‘h’ and ‘r’. We used different active game and activities to help us in our learning such as bingo games, EducationCity activities and practical games. Ask us to show you the actions and sing the songs!

Our focus story this week linked to our IDL Fairyland topic is ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We looked at a recipe for making gingerbread. To show our understanding of the different steps we worked in groups to made gingerbread men.

In pairs we brainstormed what we thought the Friendly Dragon looked like. We gathered together all our ideas and then created our own friendly dragon. The children worked really hard to create their vision of the dragon.

Open Afternoon:

During our Open Afternoon we had IDL: Fairyland. After baking the day before we decorated our gingerbread men.

‘I loved decorating the gingerbread men…’ Callen

‘Can I make another one for my mum?’ Melissa

Earlier on in the week the children discussed what they thought the friendly dragon looked like. We decided he had multi-coloured spikes, wings, a green body and an orange tummy. We painted him with our grown-ups and we will outline him and use craft materials when he is dry.

‘I think he should be multi-coloured’ Emily

‘I think his eyes should be black, I will get some black paint’ Ryan Mc

The children worked independently identifying initial sounds in our Gingerbread Man text. Mrs Cuthbert was very impressed at how well they were able to skim and scan the text so accurately.

Primary 1EC week beginning 23.09.19

Primary 1EC

This has been another busy week for Primary 1. At the beginning of the week we welcomed parents into our classroom to watch a Literacy Lesson. We loved having our grown-ups working with us and we look forward to seeing many of you again next Tuesday for our Numeracy Workshop. Here’s what else we got up to this week…

IDL and Literacy:

We continued to focus on the fairy story ‘The Three Little Pigs’. In small groups we learned to skim and scan a text looking for our taught sounds. The children were able to skim the text using their finger and identify different sounds and then highlight them. All groups worked particularly well together and helped each other if they required it.

We continued with our word building this week using individual magnetic boards.

‘It was good building the words, I liked using the boards. I found it easy!’ Hana

‘I found it easy to build the word ‘cap’’ Angus

‘I enjoyed making the words.’ Harris

We read the story ‘Baby bug’ during rhyme time this week. We then brainstormed all the different ‘ug’ words we could think about and tried writing them independently on our whiteboards.

With Ms Elizabeth, Primary 1 continued to develop their understanding of basic 2D shapes as well as revising number formation. Ms Elizabeth was very impressed with how the children have improved since she last saw them. has some excellent games on 2D shape games. The children love playing these so let them show you.

If you are out and about see how many 2D shapes you can find.

Primary 1EC

Week beginning 16.09.19

This week in literacy we wrote a story about a dragon. We read the story ‘There’s no dragon in this story’ and then thought about what our own dragon looked like. We decided that a dragon could be any colour we wanted. Discussion took place around what features the dragon might have such as horns, long claws, wings etc.

In phonics we continue to read and build three letter words and learned  two new sounds ‘c’ and ‘k’.

This week with Ms Elizabeth the children started to look at basic 2D shapes and their properties. The children looked at real life objects that contained these shapes, played active games and used topmarks to revise and consolidate their learning.

‘I loved making the straw house’   Darcie

‘I’m doing bricks on the third house on the sheet as the third little pigs house was bricks.’   Rhys

After creating their Three Little Pigs houses in class the children went outside to create their own house, using Loose Parts Play.

Some children worked independently and some worked in pairs or trios.

Miss Higgins and Mrs Cuthbert were very impressed with the creativity.

The rain will be able to get through my roof, I will need to fix it’ Andrew

The children have also been very excited about checking on their beanstalk to see if they have started to grow yet. We will keep you posted…

Primary 1EC Week Beginning 09.09.19

PE: Mr Foley

P1EC have been working hard in their first 4 weeks of PE with Mr Foley. They’ve been developing their ‘Balance and control’ by creating different positions and holding various shapes. They have been exploring different ways of ‘travelling,’ with different speeds, levels, directions and stopping safely.

Emily ‘I like these running games, they’re fun.’

The children are showing improvement in their control and footwork.

Callen: ‘I’m getting better when I move’

We have started some individual and partner throwing and catching, but will continue to consolidate this over the course of the year in different situations.

Overall P1EC have had a great start to PE in P1 and are finding the lessons challenging and fun.

This week we have been developing our Fairyland display. Both Primary 1 classes have been working together to create a beanstalk, giant’s feet, clouds and Jack. Our Big Buddies helped us with the leaves of the beanstalk.

Now that we have learned 6 initial sounds we are able to build some simple words such as sat, pin, ant, pan, tap. Mrs Cuthbert has been very impressed with our word building skills. We can say, make, break, blend and then write the word. In our literacy activities we have been using magnetic boards to build words independently. As part of our consolidation week we created a graffiti chart of the 6 initial sounds S, A, T, P, I, N. We could draw a picture, write a word or practice writing the sound. We worked well together.

We have also made zig zag books for our sounds. We cut out pictures from magazines and catalogues of things that started with our S, A, T, P, I, N sounds.

‘We think these are great!’ Hana

During numeracy this week the children have been using number fans and tens frames to help them with identifying numbers.

Our counting is improving all the time. We are working hard to accurately start counting from any number up to 30 and counting back from 10.

During our pattern work this week we used interactive games, practical activities and a consolidation worksheet to show our understanding.

At the end of this week we spent time looking at each other’s homework for ideas we could use in next week’s homework.

Primary 1EC

Week Beginning 02.09.19

Primary 1EC are doing very well with their morning routines. They have picked this up quickly and are ready to start our daily programme, by just after 9am. Good job!

This week we have revised the sounds ‘s’, ‘a’ and ‘t’ and have learned ‘i’, ‘p’ sand ‘n’. We have enjoyed singing through the songs and doing the actions.

Mrs Cuthbert has been very impressed with our word building. Using the sounds that we have learned we have built words such as pan, tin, sat, sit, at, an, it, tap, pit, tip. We can show you using our homework sound cards. Ask us!

‘Look Mrs Cuthbert I have spelt ants’ Rhys

We have continued to work on our formation of our initial sounds and have used active strategies such as glitter and playdoh to help us.

‘I can make all of our sounds’ Hana

With Ms Elizabeth we have been looking at identifying and continuing a colour and/or shape pattern. We have learned a pattern song and have used online games and activities to support our learning.

P1EC have now had 4 sessions of PE with our specialist Mr Foley. They love going to his classes and ask everyday if it is PE!

We have been learning about taking turns, sharing and working in pairs and small groups. All our activities have been play-based games.

P1EC week beg 26.08.19

Another busy week in P1EC. This week we had a lot of firsts.

First time we had gym with Mr Foley, first time we spent quality time with our buddies, first time we met Ms Elizabeth.

Ms Elizabeth will be in class on Thursdays when Mrs Cuthbert has her day out.

IDL Fairlyand

On Wednesday of this week we had a big surprise when we came back in from lunch. There was a glitter trail leading to the front of the classroom where the children found a fairy tale and a letter. The letter was from a friendly dragon who was asking for our help to rebuild Fairyland.

The children were really keen to help. They discussed which fairy stories they would like to read (the more we read, the more people will believe in Fairyland) what they already knew about Fairy tales and what they would like to learn and do.

Hana wrote back to the dragon explaining that ‘we would love to help you save Fairyland. We want you to be happy’

What we already know…

‘Tinkerbell is a fairy’-Miley

‘Fairy tales always have a happy ending’- May

‘The Beast in Beauty and the Beast was a monster’-Darcie

‘The three little pigs built their own house. The wolf blew them down’- Rhys

‘The three little pigs made houses from straw, sticks and bricks. The wolf couldn’t blow down the house made of bricks’- Callen

‘Little Red Riding Hood visited her Granny’- Summer

This week we started on our phonics programme. So far we have learnt the sounds ‘s’, ‘a’ and ‘t’. We learnt the song and action for the sound and how to correctly form the letter. ‘s’ song ‘a’ song ‘t’ song

In Numeracy we have been enjoying playing on Education City  to consolidate our numbers to 20. We have also been working hard on our formation when writing numbers. Next week the children have asked to use playdoh and shaving foam to help them with practising their formation.

Check out the following links at home!

P1EC week beginning 19.08.19

Primary 1EC have had a really good first week at Primary School. They have investigated the classroom, participated in engaging play opportunities, spent time their buddies and started to create their class charter.

Class Charter

Mrs Cuthbert asked the children what rules we should have in our class to ensure that we stayed safe and had a good time in our class. The children came up with lots of fabulous ideas. Here are just a few:

Isla- ‘no fighting or hitting we should be kind and caring’

Cooper- ‘Sit on the carpet with our legs crossed, in a basket’

Hana– ‘always try our best’

Rhys– ‘practice makes perfect’

Ellie– ‘always listen when someone is talking’

This week we started to look at the characters from our Oxford Reading Tree reading books. We have started learning to recognise some of their names. Mrs Cuthbert was very impressed with us.
