The column method is a way of solving calculations with the numbers set out in columns according to ones, tens, hundreds and so on.

It is important to note that this method can be used to carry out a range of operations – not just addition. Sometimes this method is incorrectly referred to as “CHIMNEY SUMS”. The word “sum” refers specifically to addition.
