Term 1 Overview

Dear Parent/Carer,

Primary One are settling well into the daily routines of school life and are making new friends at Redwell Primary. We have already had lots of fun, enjoying learning in exciting and active ways, inside and outside the classroom and exploring our new surroundings.

I hope you find the following information useful. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

General Information:

Drinking Water

Children are encouraged to bring plain water in a flask or plastic bottle to drink throughout the school day. This keeps little minds and bodies hydrated and ready to learn. Please ensure that bottles are labelled with your child’s name. Children can refill them during the day from water coolers in school. Fruit juice or flavoured water is discouraged unless it is part of a packed lunch or for playtime.

Painting Aprons

Children will have Art with our specialist teacher Mrs Barron every second Tuesday. They will also take part in various Art, craft and model making activities throughout the week. Sometimes things will get a little messy so we ask for all children to bring a paint apron or old painting shirt with their name on it which will be kept in school.

PE Days

Primary One have already met Mrs Morrison, our PE Teacher, and enjoyed their first few gym lessons. They will have PE on a Monday and Wednesday. It is helpful if gym kits are clearly labelled with your child’s name and gym bags stay in school during term time. It would also be very helpful if your child did not wear a school tie on gym days.  Children should not wear any kind of jewellery to keep safe during PE.  If for any reason earrings cannot be removed then they should be covered with tape or plasters before coming to school.

Red Communication Folder

All children have been given a red communication folder which should be brought to school every day. This folder is used mainly for homework but it is also used to send letters and any other correspondence home. Please put all any money in an envelope clearly labelled with your child’s name and class. It is important that Red Communication Folders are checked every night.

Weekly Homework

Following on from our homework consultation last session, homework will be issued on a Monday and returned on Thursday. In P1, homework will consist of letter sound cards/handwriting sheet and one Maths/Numeracy task. Homework should not take longer than 10 minutes per night and should reinforce and consolidate learning in school. Please ensure you sign homework.

Morning Snack

As a Health Promoting School we encourage the children to bring a small healthy snack for playtime, such as fruit or raisins. To promote independence please ensure that snacks are brought to school in school bags instead of packed lunch boxes, as this makes it easier for the children to organise.

Meet the Teacher Evening

Thank you for coming along to our Meet the Teacher evening last week. It was wonderful to see so many of you there. There will be many more opportunities during the school year for you to come into our school and share in your child’s learning. The end of school day is a very busy time in P1, with lots of routines still being established. We would appreciate your support in not distracting your child by approaching or knocking on the classroom window.

Learning focus this term:

Through our topic, Our Community, we will be learning about:

  • what a community is
  • what and where our community is and what makes it an effective one
  • jobs we can do when we are older and people who help us in our local community
  • the difference between a ‘need’ and a ‘want’ and we will be able to link these to the Rights we are entitled to.
  • how to keep ourselves safe in an emergency and develop the necessary skills to make an emergency telephone call.

The children will also learn about the community that Miss Stephens worked in during the summer of 2016, in Rwanda, and will be able to compare and contrast the similarities and differences to our community here, in Alloa.

Core Literacy

  • The children will begin learning their initial sounds. Each sound will be taught in the class and should be consolidated at home by completing homework activities. The children are encouraged to say the sound, say the accompanying rhyme and practice letter formation.
  • There is a big focus on pencil control at this early stage of P1. The children are encouraged to hold their pencil between their thumb and index finger and I would appreciate your support in reinforcing this at home.
  • Formal reading will begin in due course as the children become more confident with their sounds.
  • Writing skills will focus on sequencing of events within well known stories and rhymes, using picture clues and discussion to build a sense of story structure. As well as sharing their news from the weekend and writing some of the sounds taught in class.

Core Numeracy

  • The children will continue to build on their knowledge of numbers 0 – 30. They will learn how to form the number correctly and will learn about value.
  • We will learn about ordering the days of the week correctly, as well as the seasons and months of the year.
  • We will be learning about ten frames and how to quickly recognise how many spots are on our ten frames without counting.
  • We will be learning about ordering numbers and working out missing numbers.

Teaching and Learning

We will focus on establishing rules and routines, promoting independence and children using their own initiative to organise themselves, their belongings and their learning materials. A variety of active and motivating approaches will be used to develop Literacy, Numeracy and Health & Wellbeing knowledge and skills. Hands on, creative and co-operative activities using tactile materials and active games will enhance children’s learning within P1. We will grasp every opportunity to go outside and use the environment as a stimulus for learning. We will begin to use the net books (small laptops) to practise our letter sounds and number skills. ICT will feature frequently as one of our activity learning stations. We place great value on the importance of play in P1 and children have regular opportunities to engage in such activities as construction, role play, problem solving and imaginative small world play.

Health and Wellbeing

As a Health Promoting school we actively encourage and teach our children to make healthy choices, to enable then to become healthy, active and emotionally resilient young people of the future. The children are learning to become ‘Cool in School’ and are beginning to recognise their emotions and how to deal with these appropriately. The children are learning to become more resilient and solve their own problems. For example, they know what to do if they are stuck with their learning task or if they do not have someone to play with.

Please encourage your child to participate in the Active Sports Clubs that are on offer, as well as any school based clubs that take place throughout the year. Keep looking in school bags for further information. We are delighted to say that there is new playground equipment for the children to play with during lunchtime.

We would appreciate your support in promoting a healthy and balanced diet, both in your child’s morning snack and in their packed lunch. We would discourage any type of fizzy juice in school. Children are encouraged to bring in a water bottle, which they can use during class time and refill during the day. There are water fountains situated throughout the school for daily use.

Breakfast Club

As I am sure you will agree, breakfast is such an important meal to start off the day. We offer a Breakfast Club every morning from 8.30am until 8.55am at the cost of 80p per day. Children can enjoy a selection of cereals, toast and drinks then enjoy a relaxed social time taking part in games and activities before classes start. There will be no charge for those children who are entitled to free meals. Please encourage your child to come along and join our already popular Breakfast club. Children will be collected from the front entrance of the school.

 Playground

A reminder that all children who cycle to school must wear a safety helmet and ‘walk’ their bikes whilst in the playground. There are bike racks available.

Golden Time Toys

Children can bring a toy to school on a Friday to play with during Golden Time. Please remember that the school cannot take responsibility for the safety of these toys and therefore we request that your child does not bring in expensive items without your consent. We would kindly ask that no electronic toys are brought to school for Golden Time. We appreciate your support with this matter.

Many thanks for your continued support

Miss Stephens

A fun week in P1

Hello everyone,

This week we have been really busy. We have learned three new sounds, learned how to use our number line in Maths and learned some new songs in Music. We know how to work out one more and one less on our number lines! The highlight of our week was when we went on a number hunt outside, we learned that numbers are everywhere and they tell us different things. We had a discussion about numbers in our house and were able to identify that we have numbers on clocks, cookers, our front doors and some of us even have numbers in our bedrooms! Numbers really are everywhere!

We have been learning about our school community and drew and painted pictures of people who help us in our school. There were some lovely paintings of Mrs Strang, Mrs McQuillan, Miss Fuller and Miss Stephens as well as others.

Next week we will have a number hunt in our school and figure out what the numbers in our school tell us about. We will also learn some more sounds, begin to read some books and learn about different jobs. We will also learn a song about Harvest as we have a special assembly next Friday.

Please check red folders for some beautiful Christmas cards that we have designed. You have the opportunity to have these lovely pictures made into read Christmas cards. Please return these by Friday 29th.

Have a great weekend everyone. Primary 1 deserve a long rest as they have been working extremely hard!
