P2M That’s All Folks!

We had our final Show and Tell session of the year.  This week we found out about favourite toys, some art work and a little baby brother!  Thank you once again to our class photographers.

Last week lots of us had a great time at our school disco.  Here are some photos of the night.

Well we have now come to the end of a very busy year.  Thank you to all of our families for your fabulous support.  Your children have worked very hard and it has been a pleasure being their teacher for the last term.

Have a lovely summer and we will look forward to seeing you all in August.

“We are more than friends, we are a team!” Primary 2M

P2M Countdown to Summer!

The summer holidays are getting closer but we are still so busy!  Here is a little snapshot of our week.

We have been continuing to enjoy using the loose parts in our playground.  We have been making obstacle courses as well as enjoying some relaxing time!

On Wednesday we took part in the Redwell Marathon.  EVERYONE in our class ran at least a mile and altogether we ran 38.5 miles!  Mrs Morton was amazed at our achievement.  Thank you to our families and friends who came along to cheer us on and to run with us.  That’s what we call team work!

Wednesday was a really busy day for us as we also had a visit from Mr McLaren who is a local farmer.  Mr McLaren told us all about his farm, what happens throughout the farming year and about the animals and plants he grows on his farm.  We all enjoyed looking at some of the plants and at the fantastic pictures he showed us.  The combine harvester was our favourite.  This was a fantastic way to finish our Food and Farming topic  and also make links to real life jobs. (Thank you to our P2M photographers!)

During our Show and Tell this week we found out about snorkelling, favourite toys, and saw some very cute baby photos.  Well done everybody!  Thank you to E and M for being our photographers.

Finally for this week, we met up with Mrs Johnstone to find our how the school gardens are getting on.  We had a look at the planters and the vegetable garden and we were able to pick some lettuce and beetroot.  We also helped Mrs Johnstone and some community volunteers who were constructing a path near our pond.  It was a messy job but someone had to do it!  Mrs Johnstone is doing a fantastic job in our grounds and we have really enjoyed working and learning with her.

Please remember to look out for any reading books which may still be at home and return any sponsor money as soon as you can.

Thank you!

Working With Others

We started off the week with soft start in the sunshine.  Groups have been enjoying being creative with the loose parts in the playground.  Other groups worked together with other activities such as number games and making silly sentences.

During our Show and Tell this week we found out about favourite toys, pets, special stones found on holidays, exciting holiday rides at Disneyland, birthdays and some judo moves! Thank you to Evie for being our photographer.

We were using the laptops to develop our maths skills on Education City this week.  Our friends in P6 came along to help us too.

On Thursday Mrs Ahmed told us more about Islam.  Mrs Ahmed brought in a beautiful prayer mat and her prayer beads to show us.  We found out lots of information and we asked really good questions.  Thank you Mrs Ahmed!

Also on Thursday, P7S told us all about a project they have been working on about the use of palm oil and the dangers to the world’s rainforests.  We listened really carefully to the presentation and it really made us think.

A few things for next week:

  • We will be taking part in the Redwell Marathon on Wednesday.
  • Please return your child’s Learning Journal if you have not already done so.
  • As we get closer to the summer, please  return any reading books that you may have at home.
  • As usual please sign your child’s Golden Diaries and help them return it to school on Monday.

Have a lovely weekend!

P2M Busy Bees

We have come to the end of another busy week.  We can’t believe there is only 3 weeks left of P2!

Some of our class helped Mrs Johnstone in the school gardens today.  It was hard work helping with the weeding (and messy fun too).  Mrs Johnstone was telling our gardeners about the vegetables we are growing and about how helpful bees are in the garden.  You are amazing Mrs Johnstone, thank you for your help.

We have been writing character descriptions and settings for our own imaginative stories this week.  They are fantastic!

In Maths we have been learning more about < > and =.  The class were very confident with this concept.

At show and tell this week, some members of our class have been sharing information about their favourite toy, their pets and about foxes.  We can’t wait until next week.

Our Final photos this week are of some very proud P2 learners:

Please remember to sign and return Golden Diaries on Monday, thank you.

Have a lovey weekend.

We Can Do It!

We have come to the end of another busy week!

Our week started with an Assembly on Monday about having a growth mind set, something we are trying to have everyday.

We took part in a drum workshop on Thursday it was great fun.  Here are some photos from the workshop.

We had our first (official) Show and Tell of the term.  Mrs Given was really impressed by how confident everyone was.  This week we found out about special holidays, horse riding,  diamonds, sleepovers and moon rocks!

During reading and writing lessons this week we have been learning about story settings.  Our class novel, Charlotte’s Web had a fantastic description of the Zuckerman’s barn where Wilbur the pig lives.  We highlighted the key words from the book, drew a detailed picture and then wrote our own story settings.

Finally for this week, here are a few pictures to show us learning in a variety of ways.

Have a lovely weekend.

Briarlands Farm and Sports Day

Primary 2 have had a very busy week.

On Tuesday we went to Briarlands Farm for our school trip and to learn more about Food and Farming.  Farmers Katie and Rob told us all about growing strawberries and the animals in the farm.  We even got to feed some lambs, chickens and guinea pigs.  One of the highlights was finding out that 14 piglets had been born the night before.  On our tractor ride, Rob stopped the tractor and we were allowed to get off to pet one of the piglets.  They were so cute.  On top of this we were on go carts, jumpy pillows, finding our way out of mazes and playing in the sand.  It was a fabulous day!

On Thursday it was our school sports day.  We were working in our House Teams and trying our best.

Thank you to our families who came along to cheer us on.

Just a little reminder to look and sign your child’s Golden Diary and remember that homework should be handed in on Thursday.

Have a lovely weekend.

We started off this week with a lovely visit from Rigby the puppy who belongs to Esme and her family.  Esme told us all about Rigby and what she has to do to look after him.  Rigby was very well behaved and we enjoyed getting a little pat and a cuddle.

On Thursday we had a visit from P6 who helped us enjoy some reading time together.  It was lovely to see both the older and younger children read together.

We have been working with Mrs Johnstone again this week.  We were very busy in the school’s vegetable garden and helped to plant some vegetables.  We can’t wait to watch them grow.

Our final photos this week are of some very proud members of P2M showing their creative work ….

Please remember to look for Golden Diaries inside red folders and sign them, thank you.

Finally we have a new P2M class motto:

“We are more than friends, we are a team!”  This was said during a discussion and we just love it.  Thank you Esme.

Have a lovely weekend.

A Busy Start to May

Wow! We can’t believe it’s May already!

This week at Soft Start we have been working with our friends at a variety of activities.  One of our favourites was playing Farm Bingo.  We have also been developing our cutting skills and enjoying some time in the shared area.

We are very lucky to be working with Mrs Johnstone over the next few weeks to learn more about our school gardens, planting and learning about what plants need to grow as part of our Food and farming topic.

Today we were measuring the height of some of the plants in our planters.  Fertiliser is going to be added to one of the planters so we are going to watch carefully to see what difference this makes.  We knew our knowledge about measuring would come in handy!

Our Golden Diaries are in our bags today.  Please have a look and sign it before returning them back to school on Tuesday.  We have been working really hard this week and deserve lots of praise!

Enjoy the long weekend!

Learning in Term 4

                                                               2018-2019

Class Newsletter: Term 4

 Mrs Given (P2M)

 Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you find the following information useful. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact either of us.

Learning in Term 3:

Lots of our work in term 3 focused on our topic about our bodies. The children’s learned about the skeleton and major organs in the body, including the brain, heart, lungs and digestive system. We also learned about our senses. Another focus through this term was on one of our school values, resilience, and have continued to build our resilience throughout the term.

In writing, we were continuing to focus on good quality sentences, with capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Children developed their use of connectives such as and, but and because. The children also became better at self-identifying errors in their writing. As a class, we particularly enjoyed writing about some of our favourite stories, including Giraffes Can’t Dance and The Fish Who Could Wish.

In maths, our main focus was fractions. We benefitted from working with a principal maths teacher. We looked at solving fractions problems using practical materials. We also learned about multiplication, money and measurement of length, volume and weight. We continued to develop our mental maths skills, focusing on addition through 10 (e.g. 8 + 4 = 8 + 2 + 2), and doubles and near doubles ( e.g. 7 + 8 = 7 + 7 + 1).

Learning focus this term:

Through our topic Food and Farming we will be learning about:

  • Where food comes from
  • What plants need in order to grow and develop
  • Different types of agriculture in Scotland and our local area
  • Healthy food choices

If you have any experience in this area, please let us know. We would love to have some ‘experts’ come in to share in our learning journey.

Core Literacy:

  • As you are aware, we are continuing with our Read Write Inc programme for phonics and spelling. We are now using Storyworld books and other texts for our reading, along with our class novel, to help develop reading and comprehension skills.
  • We will be discussing the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts, learning about the words that authors use and how it makes us feel and/or the effect it has on the text. We will also be recognising facts and opinions.
  • Our writing lessons will have a focus on imaginative writing this term. We will be writing about a character, a setting and creating a simple story with a beginning, middle and end. We will also be developing our handwriting skills.
  • We will continue to work on our listening and talking skills through Show and Tell, Book Blessings and sharing our news at circle time.

Core Numeracy:

This term will be focusing on

  • Division using practical materials
  • Subtraction
  • Using symbols for more than (>), less than (<) and equals (=)
  • Chance and uncertainty, i.e. how likely is something to happen

We will also be learning about Islam.

Health and Wellbeing:

This term we are learning about:

  • Food and health
  • Relationship, sexual health and parenthood. Details to follow.

Yellow Wing Cuddle on the Couch:

Please help us to promote reading by joining us for Cuddle on the Couch. Come along to the Yellow Wing and spend some time reading with your child. Details to follow.

School Trip:

This year P2 will be visiting Briarlands Farm on Tuesday 14th May. Your child has received a letter about the trip which includes all of the details.

Lost Property:

We are aware that children sometimes misplace jumpers and other items of clothing. Please ensure that your child’s name is on every piece of clothing that comes into school. Children are given opportunities to find their property in class and throughout the school. If your child comes out of school without some of their belongings, they will be given the opportunity to retrieve their property the next day.

Other Information

Homework will be given out on a Monday and should be returned to school on Thursday.

Golden Diaries go home each Friday. Please look at how well your child is doing and sign it before helping your child remember to return it to school on Monday.

Your child can bring in a water bottle to drink during the day. Please make sure this is filled with water and not juice.

I am looking forward to teaching P2M for the last term of P2. Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.

Kind regards,

Mrs Given

More learning

Another busy week has past and I have had very little time to take photos of our learning!

We have been continuing our phonics learning around magic e words and finished up last week with u-e (huge brute). We enjoyed sharing our knowledge on show me boards and in our jotters, where we are extending our ability to hold a sentence then write it using different skills.

In writing we linked our learning to our topic by writing about the funny bones story, remembering and sequencing the events that happened.

In grammar lessons we moved on to learning about verbs, again linking this to our topic by matching verbs to different body part pictures.  The children were extremely focused and determined during this activity!

In Maths lessons we continued with our daily number challenge and added days of the week and months of the year to help us embed our already learned knowledge of knowing and ordering these.

We also continued our work on fractions, consolidating our knowledge of halves and quarters and for some extending this to thirds and fifths. We were challenged by being given odd numbers to share and had to explain how we would solve this so that we were still sharing equally.

With Mrs Given on Friday we were learning about money, naming coins and ordering them in relation to their value.

The children were also excited to receive their sumdog logins that you will find in the back of their homework jotters. I can see that some children are accessing the site already. In class we are working through the diagnostic test, which records the children’s progress and then sets the games at a level that will provide appropriate challenge for their individual skills and knowledge.
