We used what we learned about tally marks to complete a road traffic survey. We had to watch the traffic carefully and tally mark each time we saw a different vehicle. We did a really good job and were able to total up the number of cars, lorries, vans, buses and cyclists we saw.

3D Shapes
We have been learning all about 3D shapes. We know some of their names like a cube, cuboid, pyramid, cone and sphere. We investigated their properties by looking closely at how many sides and corners 3D shapes have and also if we could find any 2D shapes within 3D shapes. We even had a go at created some 3D shapes using sticks and marshmallows.

Almond Valley Trip
P1, along with P1B and P2/1, thoroughly enjoyed their class trip to Almond Valley, near Livingston. It was a great first school trip experience for all and P1A have many fun memories. Meeting many friendly farm animals, including Highland cattle, rare breed sheep, goats, ponies, horses, and some very ducks was a highlight. They had mots of fun and engaged their imagination in a range of play including jumping in the bouncy castle, bouncy pillow and trampolines and playing in the Adventure Zone. They also discovered some old farm machinery in the museum.
More tricky words…

We have been learning some more tricky words this week in lots of fun ways; tricky word splat and writing them on a partner’s back. We are starting to recognise and read more of them and can even use them in our writing.
2D Shapes
This week we have been learning all about 2D shapes in Maths. We can name 2D shapes including squares, circles, rectangles, triangles, pentagons and hexagons. Some of us can even identify and name semi-circles and octogons. We could find 2D shapes in real life and create some of our own using lollipop sticks and playdough. We can count how many sides and corners 2D shapes have.

Making delicious sandwiches for Mr Grinling
We created delicious sandwiches for Mr Grinling’s lunch. Some of us made a jam sandwich, others made a cheese and tomato sandwich but a few people made a cheese and jam sandwich. We are sure Mr Grinling would enjoy eating them, we certainly did.

Afterwards we created our own set of instructions. We planned our instructions by drawing what we did first and used these to help up write a clear set of instructions for someone else to follow.
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch
Our topic this term has been based on the super story “The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch”. We have really enjoyed the story and listening to the other books in the series.
We have sequenced the story using pictures, written stories about the characters, recreated Mr and Mrs Grinling’s little white cottage and helped to create a fabulous wall display. We have also looked closely at lighthouses, what they are for and where you can find them. We can tell you all about Grace Darling, a real life heroine, who lived in a real lighthouse and saved 9 people’s lives.
