Read, Write, Inc.

Read, Write, Inc is new to both the children and teachers at Menstrie as well as the parents, so I understand there may be some unanswered questions. Here is some information about our new literacy scheme. Additional information can also be found on the Ruth Miskin website.

  • Read Write Inc. is a fast paced, comprehensive and rigorous programme which will develop all areas of literacy and work for all children.
  • It is comprehensive, it builds strong links between the children’s phonics work, their reading and their writing.
  • It compliments our existing synthetic phonics programme so will be easily accessible for our Primary 1s who are beginning Primary 2.
  • It works – we are confident that this will bring success for your children and there is a wealth of evidence to support that.

What it means for you:

  • Homework should be easier!  Spelling words will be contained in the children’s reading book, so there is no separate sheets to keep track of.
  • Active homework! The focus is on encouraging the children to blend words together and practise their blending techniques.  This should make it far easier to fit in, e.g. that drive to the sports club would be a perfect opportunity to fit in 5 minutes spelling practise!
  • Children are not decoding at home.  Children will have read any given text three times in class, therefore they should be able to sound out words comfortably and fluently.  This does not mean that the read at home is a waste, but that you can focus on encouraging the children to think about what they are reading.  It should also make the experience more enjoyable.
  • You are supported!  The Read Write Inc. website (see Ruth Miskin link above) has videos to support you in reading with your child and ideas for games to practise their spelling.
