Primary 7 Tree Planting

P7 went tree planting at Gartmorn Dam with representatives John and Barbara from the Development Trust and Aimee from TCV, alongside some other volunteers.

They planted the Gartmorn Dam’s first community orchard trees, bulbs to attract pollinators, and positioned a hedgehog house.

They also carried out an Autumnal scavenger hunt which helped learners identify different trees and plants and learn about mushrooms.

Our learners also foraged and had a campfire where they toasted marshmallows.

You can read all about this in the Alloa Advertiser

A fabulous day was had by all, and the adults that worked with the class, commended their efforts and attitudes and praised their positive representation of Deerpark.

Deerpark Primary School has been awarded a hat-trick of prestigious awards

Deerpark Primary School has been awarded a hat-trick of prestigious awards.
We have been recognised to a gold standard by School Sports Scotland, the Scottish Book Trust and Emotion Works.
The School Sports Scotland Gold Award recognises the school’s high level of participation in physical education, school sports events, clubs, and broader sports activities.
The school’s sports committee played a pivotal role in achieving the award, contributing to the action plan and providing the assessors with their own evidence.
The Gold Reading School Certificate from the Scottish Book Trust recognises the school’s dedication to cultivating a love of reading among its pupils. The committee was impressed by the extensive work put in by both staff and students to foster a vibrant reading culture. Key initiatives include visits from Macastory, reading cafés, a well-stocked library, book nooks, and classroom libraries.
The Gold Emotion Works Award, recognises the school’s exceptional implementation of the Emotion Works programme over the past three years. This comprehensive programme has supported learners to develop emotional literacy and identifying effective strategies for managing their emotions. From Primary 1 through to Primary 7, learners have embraced the programme, which has positively impacted both their emotional wellbeing and overall school experience.
The school’s headteacher Anne Rice is delighted with the trio of the awards and thanked staff, parents and pupils for their hard work and dedication.

Education Scotland Inspection Report

Dear Parent/Carer,

You will be aware that in April 2024 a team of inspectors from Education Scotland visited Deerpark Primary School. The inspection report has now been published and is attached to this email.

We are delighted and proud that so many of the key strengths at Deerpark Primary School have been recognised by Education Scotland.

The inspection team highlighted the strength of school leadership commenting ‘The headteacher, supported well by her senior leadership team (SLT), has worked effectively to create a calm, purposeful learning environment in which children and adults demonstrate mutual respect. She is highly regarded in the school, the community and by staff in the local authority. She demonstrates drive and determination yet leads with humility’.

Education Scotland also praised our school for having ‘Good’ approaches of ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion that lead to positive outcomes for young people and the community. They added that the focus on relationships has ensured that ‘children benefit from the warm, safe, caring ethos and culture within the school. Staff maintain a consistent and strong focus on promoting and enhancing children’s wellbeing. Staff work well to develop positive, supportive relationships with children, parents and partners, and between children’.

Praise was also given for our work around anti-bullying. They discussed that ‘most children and the majority of their parents believe that bullying is dealt with well by staff in the school’ and recognised that ‘staff ensure there is a strong focus on a restorative approach across the school. Consequently, instances of bullying and discriminatory behaviour are declining’.

The visiting inspectors noted that ‘the quality of relationships and behaviour is very good between all staff and children. This has impacted positively on children’s behaviour’, and that ‘children are very proud of their school’.

Some areas for improvement were identified and discussed with the school. Inspectors advised that the school should continue to have a drive towards raising attainment and focus on approaches to learning and teaching.

We are delighted with the many positives that have been highlighted in this report and incredibly grateful to all members of our Deerpark Primary School community, staff, pupils, parents/carers, and other partners for the support you give us. We are determined to build on the many positives in our inspection report to ensure that Deerpark Primary School goes from strength to strength in securing the very best outcomes for our young people.

Rights Respecting Schools

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded Rights Respecting Schools – Silver Rights Aware status. Silver – Rights Aware is the second stage of the Rights Respecting Schools Award.

The award is granted by UNICEF UK to schools that show good progress towards embedding children’s rights in their policy, practice and ethos. The school was assessed by one of UNICEF UK’s Professional Advisers who looked at the whole school’s rights respecting work.

Achieving Silver: Rights Aware means that Deerpark is embedding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, promotes knowledge and understanding of the UNCRC throughout the school community and is seeing a positive impact of this on the school’s ethos, practice and environment.

The whole school community are delighted their efforts have been recognised and are now aiming to become a Gold Rights Respecting School.
