We can’t believe the school’s almost ready. Primary 4 from Claremont and St. John’s visited the site last month and there was a staff visit too. Here are some of the photographs.
St John’s P3 Visit – 28th February
On Friday 28th February P3 had a fantastic tour of the inside of our new school!
We felt very lucky to get inside the school!
Craig and Cameron made a great team and looked very professional!
We loved putting on our P.P. gear! Then Craig explained the site to us and told us what we would be doing.
We had lots of photos taken which made us feel very special!
We spent time in the P7 classroom and enjoyed looking out of the big windows.
We learned about the safety signs on building sites, then we worked in pairs to complete a quiz. It was great fun!
We asked lots of questions about building the new school and Craig answered them.
Councillor Forson and David Leng wanted to have their photo taken with us too!
We looked at the classrooms, the cloakrooms and the new dining hall.
Finally we left through the dining hall. We didn’t want to go!
P6/5 and P7/6 Visit
Two classes took a short trip along to see the progress of the construction during the week. First time as a group for about 4 months – it’s been a wee bit wet recently!
Last time we saw it there were lots of steel frames – they’ve gone and are almost completely covered in brickwork. Big difference!
Some of the childrens’ parents are involved in the construction as well – they recognised the vans, hence the picture!
We noticed the Anderson Shelter is still there.
We also noticed some of the asteroids that helped wipe out the dinosaurs (we know they are just big boulders, but it’s more fun with a good imagination). The children want to keep these as part of outdoor learning/play – hope the planners and builders read this blog.
We also went along to the Red Well from where the school gets its name. We are hoping this feature will be restored so that it looks nicer.
Primary 1 Visit
Primary 1 recently visited the site to learn how to build a wall. This is related to their Houses and Homes topic.
Some children were lucky enough to help build part of a wall down at the site. Everyone really enjoyed their trip and learned a lot about how to safely and securely build a brick wall.
More packing!
The huts are nearly empty now!
Out with the old…
The clearout operation is well and truly underway. The crates have arrived, the skips have been and gone and resources are being boxed ready to move in the summer.
Class Visits
P1, P2 and P3 have all had a chance to visit the site this month.
Each class got a tour of the building as it stands just now and they even got to see where their classrooms will be.
The classes learned a lot about the machinary on the site as well as the different materials used to build the school.
Anderson Shelter Construction
This week Primary 5 from Claremont and Primary 7 from St John’s went to visit the site to see a replica Anderson Shelter being constructed.
This was an excellent opportunity for a real life context to support their World War II topics.
The chidren who went to the site went back to school full of enthusiasm about construction and design and explained that it was the Joiners that were putting the Anderson Shelter together.
After getting into the appropriate safety clothing the children got to go into the Shelter. It’s huge!
Robertson have very kindly made two Shelters and are taking them to each school in Friday.
P 5/6/7 Site Visit
Some Primary 5s, 6s and 7s from each school went to visit the site last week.
On arrival they were given appropriate safety clothes to make sure they were safe and visable whilst on site.
Next they met the site engineer. He is a civil engineer and he explained that his job is to survey the site to check that every brick, piece of wood and piece of metal is put in exactly the correct place.
They use special equipment to do this and the children got to see a demonstartion of this is action.
The Gym Hall
Lots of classes at Claremont have been down to visit the site this week. When they were down they could see the steel framework that will be the gym hall. It is very tall.
The classes have been thinking about how they are feeling about the move to Redwell. Each class at Claremont is making up a frame to show their feelings and these will be displayed outside the front office at the main entrance. Photos of these will be posted soon.
