Summer Term!

Welcome back to Primary 6B after our Easter Holidays!

We were very busy last term and had a well deserved rest over the holidays. Hopefully we are all looking forward to enjoying the last term of school this year and are all going to continue to work extremely hard!

Primary 6B will be continuing this term to work hard to complete our John Muir Discovery Level Award.

Last term we continued our hard work from Aug-Dec by completing a litter pick in our wild area and worked with the local ranger to create bird boxes which we will be putting in our area this term.

As you can see we had a lot of fun!

In our Literacy work this term we shall continue to be focussing largely on imaginative writing, using the VCOP approach to writing. We shall be completing some Functional pieces of writing relating to our topic on The Polar Regions, for example reports, posters and booklets.

In Miss Barclay’s Maths Groups this term, the Rectangles will be completing their Second Level Assessment in preparation for high school in the Summer and will continue to work through Heinemann 8. We will be focussing on multiples; factors; primes; squares; cubes in relation to whole numbers; word formula and dealing with negative numbers.

The Squares maths group will continue to work through Heinemann 5 and will be focussing on data handling – bar charts; number properties – sequences; multiples; factors and the multiplication of a 2/3 digit number by 100.

Our topic this term is on the Polar Regions. We will be looking at the Artic and Antartic, their environment, inhabitants, wildlife and threats due to climate change. We will also be visiting Dynamic Eart this term for our class trip, which will hopefully help us to further understand our topic.

This will undoubtedly be a busy term but one I’m sure we’ll all enjoy!

Happy New Year!

It’s a very busy term ahead for Primary 6B! We will be having Scottish week in a few weeks and are already getting into the Scottish spirit of things by starting to read Sleekit Mr Tod, which is the Roald Dahl book Fantastic Mr Fox translated into Scots. We are also hoping to do lots of interesting activities and art work to celebrate Scottish week.

Primary 6B will also be continuing to work towards our Discovery Level of our John Muir Award. Over the next few weeks we are hoping to work closely with the Ranger to build bird boxes and to learn more about our wild environment.

Miss Barclay’s Writing Group

In Miss Barclay’s writing group this term we will be mainly focussing on more functional pieces of writing, as Primary 6 and 7 are doing a whole area topic on The Body, so we will have lots of reports, posters, and information leaflets to write for the topic. We will also continue to work on some imaginative writing this term, using the VCOP approach. We will be mainly focussing on Connectives in our imaginative stories.

Miss Barclay’s Maths Group

The Squares maths group this term will be focussing on numbers to 10,000 and will be sequencing, ordering and adding/subtracting these numbers. Pupils will also be learning their 8 and 9 times tables this term so any additional support and help they get at home with learning them would be greatly appreciated.

Rectangles

The pupils in the Rectangles maths group have now finished working through the Heinemann & programme and have completed their Round Ups so are now working on revision of areas that they found tricky. Pupils this term will revise areas such as finding the area of a shape, using formulae, long division, fractions, decimals and percentages before then moving onto the Heinemann 8 programme later.

The Body is our new topic in Primary 6, so we will be finding out all about our skeletal system, the names for our bones and all about the organs in our body. We will be engaging in lots of fun and exciting activities in co-operative groups and individual tasks.

Busy build up to Christmas!

Primary 6B had a very busy build up to the Christmas holidays!
We really enjoyed our last topic before the holidays, which was on Space. In class we looked at the solar sytem, the planets and the historic moon walk by Neil Armstrong.

Pupils worked very hard to create their own model solar systems and in class art work!

Primary 6 also worked very hard to create beautifully decorated glass scented candles which we sold in the Christmas Fair. It was a huge success!

We all had an enjoyable holiday but are glad to be back and are ready for the term ahead!

John Muir Award Up and Running!

In Primary 6B before the October holidays we had our first outing as part of our Discovery Level of the John Muir Award. We explored an wild place in the surrounding area of the school and found lots of interesting places to investigate!

We wrote poems about the wild area we explored and also drew pictures. We had lots of fun exploring the area. We are planning on starting to think of how we can improve the area and things we can do to conserve it.

Before the holidays we also enjoyed taking part in an assalut course alongside P6F. Even Miss Barclay and Miss Ferguson took part!

Now we are back after the October holidays we are about to start our new topic on Space. We will be learning all about the solar system, planets and astronauts.

We recently had our Halloween Disco and really enjoyed it. There were a lot of excellent costumes on display and even the teachers got dressed up!

Primary 6B and Primary 6F both went to the Smith Museum in Stirling to end our topic on World War 2 by getting the chance to see all the artefacts and even learn some more about the topic that we all enjoyed so much!

Autumn upon us already!

We are now coming into our Autumn term and have been very busy indeed! P6B have really enjoyed our WW2 topic. We’ve been working really well in our topic groups to create excellent posters on Evacuation and Gas Masks.

We have also been working very hard to create our Personal Topics, which were to be either Gas Masks or Anderson Shelters!

We have enjoyed learning about what happens during an air raid and the things people had to wear to protect themselves.

Primary 6 pupils are looking forward to visiting The Smith Museum in Stirling to find out more about WW2 after our October week break!

In Miss Barclay’s Maths Group this term we have been enjoying a lot of active learning! We went outside in groups to record how many activities we could complete in a minute. We recorded our results using tally marks! Who knew doing maths work could keep us so fit?

In our maths lessons we’ve also being learning about weight, in particular how to read scales and weigh things accurately. We even managed to use our excellent weighing skills when creating yummy Crispy Cakes!

In Primary 6B we are very excited that we are about to start working towards our Discovery Level Award for The John Muir Award. We will be working in a wild area just outside the school grounds and will be trying to conserve it in some way.

John Muir was a Scottish explorer who loved being in the outdoors and worked very hard during his life to teach people how important it is to conserve and protect our wild life and nature.

We are hoping in P6 that we too can make a difference and we will keep you posted on all of our good work working towards the award this year.

First term at school!

Primary 6B have now been working hard for 2 weeks and have settled in very well!
We have a very unique class this year that has only 11 pupils!

We are however working very closely and linking up frequently with P6F. We are working together as classes in groups for maths, writing, gym, art, music and topic so we don’t stay a small group of 11 for very long!

In Miss Barclay’s writing group this term, we will be using the V.C.O.P approach to imaginative writing, with a particular emphasis on Punctuation. Pupils will be encouraged to check their work and their peers work carefully for errors. We will also be working on how to build up a good story by creating an interesting opener, colourful characters and convincing conclusions.

In Miss Barclay’s maths class there are two groups, Squares and Rectangles.

Squares will be working on 3D and 2D shape this term and will be discussing the properties of various shapes. We will also be looking at which shapes can tile and which can’t. Later in the term we will be looking at symmetry and will be trying to create our own symmetrical patterns! We will be continuing to learn our multiplication tables this term. We are focussing on the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 times tables but will be looking at the 7 times table soon.

Rectangles will be revisiting Decimals/Fractions and Percentages this term and will be looking at the relationship and links between them. We will also be looking at negative numbers and rotational symmetry within 2D shapes.

For our topics this term our first topic will be WW2. Pupils will work in their topic groups to discover what started the war, what life was like during the war and the main events that took place during it. We are hoping to create a display in the P6/7 open area to share our learning with everyone in the school.

Our second topic in this term will be Space. Pupils will learn all about the “Space Race”, life in space as an astronaut and will learn all about the planets in the solar system.

We have a busy term ahead, which I’m sure we will all enjoy a great deal!
