The ‘Creepy House’ reading challenge is nearly here…

This year’s summer reading challenge is ‘Creepy House’. The usual rules apply: just head to your local library over the summer holidays and read 6 books to collect some special smelly stickers and to receive that all important finisher’s medal.

Don’t forget that ebooks and eaudiobooks from our Library2go service count towards your six books.

Keep an eye on our Creepy House calendar for listings of Edinburgh Libraries’ activities or ask at the library next time you’re in to find out what the summer has in store.  You’ll find all you need to know about the Summer Reading Challenge for children, at the Reading Agency’s special Creepy House website.

There’s also help at hand on Library2go, so you can easily get started and download your favourite magazines to your computer, tablet or smartphone.

“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men”

…. and women and children. In fact, what human bean can resist Roald Dahl’s way with words? On 13th September, celebrate Roald Dahl day with perhaps some of his lesser-known treasures. Search our catalogue and find something you’ve not read before.  Have you experienced The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar or the love triangle of Esio Trot ? Or download your favourite from our Library2go ebook service.

With his cast of memorable and remarkable characters and fantastical stories, many of Roald Dahl’s stories have become modern classics. There are not many authors out there who can capture the imagination and induce laugh out loud moments in quite the same way. So where do you go next when you’ve read the adventures of Matilda, The Twits,  Sophie, Charlie Bucket and George? Well you could try Who next…? our fabulous online guide to children’s authors. Search for Roald Dahl or search by genre and you’ll get loads of reading suggestions for that next favourite book. So simple, but so effective, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without Who next…?

An Olympic summer of fun

With the Olympic torch in town this week, it’s time to gear up for a summer of sport and games. Here at the library we’ve put together a page on our Your Library site dedicated to how you can get into the Olympic spirit online. Download a great sporty read from Library2go, and enjoy it on the move. Or there’s craft ideas and colour-ins for when the weather might not tempt you onto the sports field.  Don’t miss London 2012’s very own webpages of interactive quizzes, games and challenges for ages 3 to 19! Or head back to Ancient Greece and find out where it all began over 2,700 years ago with the BBC’s excellent Olympic Games and Fun Facts such as:

The famous wrestler Milo was said to train by carrying a calf every day. As the calf grew heavier, his muscles got stronger.
