Mild Numeracy – Sharing – using symbols

Thank you so much for all the photographs you have sent  showing you sharing an amount of objects equally.

Let’s think about sharing a box of crayons.

Dividing a box of crayons equally between jars.

We can write number stories using symbols.

This is the symbol we use for sharing.

÷

There is one dot on each side of the line. Both have the same.

I think it looks like two people sitting across from each other, ready to be kind and share with each other.

Have a look at these examples.

HWB: MILD – Emotional Crayons

Morning Everyone,

I hope you are all enjoying our mini project on conflict with our featured story ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’.

After reading or listening to the story a few times we notice that the crayons are expressing their feelings to Duncan as to why they have quit and left Duncan.

Use the questions below and discuss the family members, everyone might have different answers as it is their opinion.

Can you describe what each crayon is feeling?

What words can you find in each letter that tell you their emotion?

Which crayon do they feel most sorry for, and why?

Which crayon seems happiest and why do they say this?

Which crayon would they most like to cheer up?

What could they do to make one of the crayons feel happier?

Which crayon is the angriest one and why?

What could Duncan do to calm this crayon down?

Use the sway below to go through some examples.

#EveryCrayonCounts

The Crayons all come from the same box, they are all apart of a larger team. Just like you and your family we can all have different emotions but we should all still come together.

Follow the link below to make your own every crayon counts sign to share with family.

Literacy – VE Day poetry – Spicy/Hot

Good morning, everyone. Today I have an extra Reading and Writing task for you.

Click on the link at the end of this post to read two poems which were written about VE Day.  The first was written in 1945 when the war ended.  The poet was 11 years old at the time.  The second was written 60 years later, as she reflected once again on VE Day.

When you are reading the poems, discuss any unfamiliar words with an adult or look them up in a dictionary and write the meanings in your Home Learning journal.  Then, think about the following questions:

  1.  Do you notice any differences or similarities between the poems?  What are they?
  2. Which poem did you prefer and why?
  3. Was there anything you didn’t like about the poems?
  4. How do you think YOU would have felt at the end of the war?
  5. Next, write your own poem to commemorate VE Day, as if you were there at the time. Try to convey your feelings, knowing that the war is finally over.
  6. Remember to include adjectives, similes, onomatopoeia, etc. to bring your poem to life for the reader.
  7. You can choose any format you wish – acrostic, free verse, shape poem, haiku – and it can be rhyming or non-rhyming.

I look forward to reading them.

Magic Words – Spanish

During this period of being at home we have learnt to be more thankful about people, moments and opportunities. Also, the beautiful Assembly we had yesterday gave us the opportunity to think of different ways to say thank you.

So when we are thankful about something or someone we say “Thank you”  and that is our first Magic Word. We usually use 3 magic words all the time, can you remember the other 2?

Your challenges for today is related to these important Magic Words, click on the sway to see them.

Magic Words
The following words can make a huge difference in our lives by using them. We use them all the time and lately we might have been using them even more. Today we will use them as much as we …

Spicy – Literacy – Writing no.3

I selected ‘The Six-Legged Spider’ as my focus.  It contained a conflict between the main character, the spider, and a long list of employers.

This was the front cover I redesigned.  This was my second attempt.  On my first try I included some of the challenges she faced in the story, but then I thought it might give to much of the plot away, so I had another go.

I looked at some other blurbs before writing mine. I came across some that didn’t give too much away, but made you want to look inside to find out more.  I tried to keep mine similar to this, as well as short and sweet!

I can’t wait to see what you come up with Spicy writers! You can show yours to your teachers over on your Sway Journals or on Seesaw. 📝

Mr Reid’s Music Journey – Term 4

Hello everyone,

I hope that you all had a lovely weekend and you are now more settled into your Home Learning routine.

I didn’t practise as much piano throughout the holidays as I had wanted to but I am still making progress. Having my Sway and being able to see the difference between Day 1 and now Day 35 helps to keep me motivated to carry on.

Question – Can you tell me the name of the song that I am playing this week? Why do you think I chose to learn this specific song?

What was the best part about being back to Home Learning last week?
