Focused Approaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3137 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/as\/public\/aberdeenshireeps\/uploads\/sites\/2304\/2020\/11\/23123138\/Focus-on-Solution-problem.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/>These were developed in America in the 1980s by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg.\u00a0 After spending many years studying problem behaviour and trying to change it they changed their focus to studying &#8216;solution behaviour&#8217; and how to promote it.\u00a0 Two simple ideas underlie these approaches.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Nobody is perfect and this applies to our problems as well as everything else.\u00a0 If no one can &#8216;do&#8217; their problem perfectly there must always be &#8216;exception&#8217; times when the problem behaviour is not seen.\u00a0 Whatever the person is doing differently at these &#8216;exceptional&#8217; times will be the basis of a potential solution.\u00a0 The aim is therefore to discover whatever a person is already doing which might contribute to the resolution of the problem with which they have come.<\/li>\n<li>Knowing where you want to get to makes the getting there much more likely.\u00a0 One of the common consequences of a serious problem is that it clouds our view of the future.\u00a0 We know that we don&#8217;t want the problem but we have lost sight of what it is we do want.\u00a0 Solution focused approaches ask lots of questions about what life might be like if the problem was solved.\u00a0 This enables a picture of a preferred future to be created and the clearer this becomes the greater the possibility of it beginning to happen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brief.org.uk\/about-us\/what-is-the-solution-focused-approach\"><u>Adapted from what is the solution focused approach <\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Assumptions underlying solution focused working<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Whatever the problem there will always be exceptions (times when the problem is less or absent).<\/li>\n<li>All individuals have hopes for the future where the problem is not present.<\/li>\n<li>Everyone has the resource to solve their problems &#8211; they just don&#8217;t know it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>The essence of solution focused working aims to:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3138 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/as\/public\/aberdeenshireeps\/uploads\/sites\/2304\/2020\/11\/23123159\/Solution-ahead.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" \/><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Work with the person rather than the problem.<\/li>\n<li>Look for resources, strengths, abilities, useful qualities\/beliefs and skills rather than deficits.<\/li>\n<li>Explore possible and preferred futures.<\/li>\n<li>Explore what is already contributing to those possible futures.<\/li>\n<li>Treat all individuals as the experts in all aspects of their lives.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid trying to understand what causes and maintains a problem and how to fix it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Educational Psychologists are trained to use solution-focused approaches within consultations, with groups and individuals.\u00a0 Solution focused intervention offers a framework for thinking within all of the work which the service engages in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some examples of solution focused questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>So what did it take to do that?<\/li>\n<li>What helped you achieve it?<\/li>\n<li>How did you do that?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3139 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/as\/public\/aberdeenshireeps\/uploads\/sites\/2304\/2020\/11\/23123214\/Problem-talking.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"217\" \/><\/li>\n<li>How did you deal with that?<\/li>\n<li>What did you learn about yourself by managing to do that?<\/li>\n<li>What might others have learned about you from that?<\/li>\n<li>How will you know that things are improving?<\/li>\n<li>How will you know that the problem is solved?<\/li>\n<li>What will you be doing differently?<\/li>\n<li>Who will notice first?<\/li>\n<li>What will others be doing differently<\/li>\n<li>Let&#8217;s imagine that tomorrow turns out to be a good day for you, how will you know that it is going well?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Some examples of techniques<\/h4>\n<p><strong>The Miracle question script:<\/strong> Imagine that tonight while you are asleep a miracle happens and your hopes all come true (or your problems are solved).\u00a0 Because you are asleep you don\u2019t realise that a miracle has happened.\u00a0 When you wake up, what is the first thing you\u2019re going to notice that is different and that tells you the miracle has happened?\u200b<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scaling:<\/strong> helping individuals or groups to consider where they are on scale from 0-10 in relation to problems can be effective in charting the next small step or end aim.\u00a0 Example scales \u2013 where are you on the scale?<\/p>\n<p>Work is
