Jake Williams Workshops
The P5 visits enjoyed workshops last Thursday with local musician Jake Williams. Jake has been doing a project with Deveron Arts about the River Deveron, and has walked from it’s source near the Cabrach to where it comes out to the sea at Banff. Along the way he has collected songs and ballads from the area. He played some of these to the p5’s. Songs included The Marchioness of Huntly, The Deveron Reel, Drumdelgie and The Burning of Auchindoon. The Song The Burning of Auchindoon was written in 1597 around the time of Mary Queen of Scots, and the p5s are hoping the learn it and perform it at the Launch of the Junior Tour Guides at Huntly Castle in early July .
Pupils had a chance to handle some of Jake’s musical instruments, which included a ukelele and a double guitar. Some pupils also took part in some impromptu highland dancing.
Jake told the classes about how he found two bottles on his travels along the Deveron. Inside the bottles were messages, written by past pupils from Gordon Primary! Pupils found this very exciting, and many thought it would be great to write their own messages to put in bottles.
The children enjoyed singing along with Jake and hearing old songs from this part of Scotland
The Nursery
The nursery went to local shops to find Fairtrade products. They enjoyed looking for food with the fairtrade logo. When they went to the local shops they bought some biscuits for them to eat. They also got some bananas to eat as well. They saw the sign in the window of the Stewarts hall telling us that Huntly is a Fairtrade town. They sat down and talked about fairtrade and fairtrade products .
Back in the nursery they made snack using the fairtrade products that they bought, including some yummy fruit kebabs!
Some of the P6 fairtrade representatives went to the nursery to tell the children about the work of the school fairtrade group and about fairtrade fortnight. The nursery children also bought bananas from the fairtrade banana tuckshop in the school.

Creative Place!
All the prize winners of the Huntly cultural fund met together in the hall of the Parish Church on at 7 o’clock on Tuesday 3rd December.
These included many groups that are developing creative projects in the community, such as the Huntly Pipeband, Huntly Summer School, Dudendance and Gordon Primary’s Huntly Castle junior tour guides.
Philippa and Hannah went to along represent the tour guides, dressed in their beautiful costumes. They did an excellent job of telling other community groups about the Junior Tour Guides and about how we intend to use our Cultural Fund award.
More details about the Cultural Fund can be found here

Well done Philippa and Hannah!
P7 War Day
The Primary 7 WarDay was a great success, they learnt loads!
Sir Patrick Scott came in and showed a presentation about Huntly during the War. He told the class about the blackout and how he had had to deliver eggs to his grandma but because of the blackout he tripped on the kerb and dropped the eggs. He also told us about the home guard and about a boy who had picked up a grenade and it went off and he distorted his face and lost all his fingers. Pupils were told about school in wartime, evacuees and lots more; the class found it very interesting and learnt a lot!
The man from Urban Studies was situated in the Deveron Building and showed the class a video demonstrating what it was like to be near a bomb when it blows up (it was from a black and white film). He also had stations explaining about things during the War e.g Beach Defences, Schools, Anderson Shelters and lots more!
Miss Philip Smith (P7b class teacher) carried out a art lesson, they all made a peaceful scene in the night with moon glowing and a scene with destroyed houses and fire burning down the houses!
Both classes enjoyed the War Day loads!

Halloween Fun.
Primary 4B have been making crow masks that could be worn at the Halloween parade that is taking place this Saturday.
The theme of the Halloween festivities this year is “On the back of the North Wind”, named after a book by the famous Huntly writer George McDonald. Crows feature often in his stories. Crows (or Corbies) will be appearing at the parade, along with the Huntly Pipe Band.
Mrs Chalmers came into school last week to help P4B make the masks. They will be decorated with feathers.
P4s Edible Walk.
Last Monday both P4 classes went on part of Huntly’s Edible trail.
The edible trail is the idea of local artist Norma Hunter. The walk from Battlehill and around the Meadows includes free food, some of it planted and some of it growing wild.
Norma and forest ranger Helen Rowe took the p4s down the Avenue and towards the Meadows.
Children looked at and tasted chives, growing at the Cooper pavilion. They then tasted Sweet Cecily which grows along the banks of the Deveron and tastes like liquorice.
Next they played a fun game trying to collect air, water, soils and light wihout being eaten by birds!
At the meadows they saw elderberries, and had a little taste (they were quite bitter!) and then saw the community orchard, which has newly planted apple and pear trees. After that they all enjoyed a juicy apple that Norma gave to them.
They really enjoyed their walk and learnt a lot about plants and food. Thank you Norma and Helen!
Edible Walk.
One day at school we got told to put our outdoor gear on and we went outside around the school. We first ate some chives down at the Cooper park. When we were walking down further and further we reached the Deveron and Clover ate some nettles and they were stingy! When we were still at the Deveron we had some sweet cicely it tasted of liquorice and it was so sweet. The food was so sweet it almost hipnotised Clover! I really liked it very much.

Summer Tour Guiding
In the holidays some of you guys would have been sunbathing while some people from Gordon Primary were busy at work. Each Wednesday of the holiday some of the P5s/6s delivered tours around Huntly Castle.
The tours were enjoyed by members of the public, including some chinese visitors who were delighted to see the guides with their sumptuous costumes. After school clubs and people from Huntly and the surrounding area also enjoyed the tour. All the Tour guides had to cope with all weather conditions so that means they had to do it rain or shine, including some torrential rain showers! They also took part in the Room to Roam festival in the square (organised by Deveron Arts) where they sang “The Jacobite” accompanied by Keith Cockburn. They also performed at the weekly summer ceilidhs in the Stewarts hall on Wednesday evenings .
