Cuban Visitors

P4C were visited this week by Celia and Junior, two Cuban artists who are visiting Huntly for 3 months for a residency with Deveron Arts. The artists are developing a project about friends and looking at if and how Facebook has affected friendships.

Celia and Junior talked to Primary 4 about their friendships and what they felt a good friend is. All children agreed that they would much rather play with their friends face to face than talk to them online.

The children asked Celia and Junior about Cuba. They found out about celebrations and festivals (they were surprised to hear that Cubans don’t get Easter eggs at Easter!) , weather, Cuban wildlife, food and music. They looked at a globe to see where Cuba is.

P4C really enjoyed meeting Celia and Junior and making friends with them!

Travelling Gallery

Primary 4 classes were very lucky to be able to visit the Travelling Gallery, which was parked in the Secondary carpark.

It is a mobile gallery which travels through Scotland bringing modern art to towns and cities

The exhibition was called “Turquoise Heid”. It included drawings, animations, photos, sculpture, film, collage and painting. Artists included David Shrigley and Matthew Barnes.

P4 pupils found out a bit about why the artists decided to create the artwork and about some of the techniques the artists used. It was very interesting.

Euan liked the 3D Beano comic . He said “it looked freaky and seemed to pop out into your face!”

Keira said “I liked the pictures and sculptures at the door. If you put the headphones on you could hear the strange noises  like kettles and people screaming>”

Tree Planting 2013

Every class from p4 to p7 has been tree planting last week.We planted black thorn, hazelnut, wild cherry and pine and we did it in the meadows. We had to dig the whole with a fancy shovel and made sure the roots were covered and patted it down and then put a bit of wood what is called a stake beside it  and then put a tree guard around it. When we get older we will have fun watching them grow. I think every one had fun and so did I!

Tadpoles

Last Monday P4c got some frog spawn for their classroom. The spawn soon started to hatch with the warmth of the room, and they now have lots of tadpoles. The class are keeping a diary to record the changes they observe in the tadpoles. They are hoping they will have some froglets by the end of term, and are wondering if they could walk to the Bin Forest to release them into the wild.

The class have been carrying out research about the tadpoles and made eye catching posters about their findings. They gave a talk to the class about what they had found out.

Space

Space craft of all shapes and sizes have been winging their way into Gordon Primary over the last couple of weeks.

Primary 4C were asked to make a space vehicle at home using recycled materials. Each pupil would show their vehicle to the class and do a brief talk about who would use the space craft, its destination, what sort of fuel it used and any other interesting facts.

The results have been very impressive. One space craft comes complete with fridge, television and toilet! The models are currently on display in the P4 area.

Sharing Assembly

Last week  (13th March) Cameron and Katie from P6 told us about the Junior First Aid course that they had taken part in. They had learnt simple but important first aid guidelines, such as two different ways to help if someone is choking.

Well done Cameron and Katie.

Next Chris, Christine and Pietra told us how they have been busy raising money for Comic Relief by bouncing into school and home again on Space Hoppers. They explained how their journey has been made more difficult because of snow and ice …. and they have the bruises to prove it!  Well done Chris, Christine and Pietra for your  effort!

Finally P4A showed us what they have been learning about this term; they performed a poem “The Fight of the Year” by Roger McGough, complete with actions. Some of the class read poems that they had written themselves. Others told us they had been learning about electricity and learning how to make a circuit. They showed us models that they had made which had moving parts (a propeller on a helicopter) or parts that lit up (cats’ eyes).

Sharing assemblies P4C

Last week P6b and P4c shared what they have been doing with the Upper stages.

P4C have been learning about space. They acted out a game show called “Im a celebrity, Get me to Mars,” answering questions about space. The winning team won a trip to Mars.

While they were exploring Mars they suddenly met some aliens. They weren’t sure if they were friendly, but fortunately the aliens, (who were also a bit frightened at first), were friendly and welcoming. The Martians told the people from Earth all about their red, dusty planet.

P4c also showed the posters and alien portraits that they had done in art with Mrs. Wills.

Orchestra

On Monday after school there is an Orchestra practice. Mrs McIntosh and Mrs Innes hold Orchestra and choose the pieces of music we play.

There are several instruments including violins, cellos, trumpets, trombones, oboes, flutes and clarinets.

Sadly, Orchestra is going to stop for Easter and start again at Winter. They are not planning to do an concert.

The songs they are playing now is the Chariots of Fire, Air on the G string and the water music.
