Old Rayne Retains its Fairtrade School Status

 Old Rayne School were delighted to find out that they have retined their Fair Trade Status by organised the events below;

Ran Fairtrade stalls at our school Harvest, St Andrew’s Day, Burns Day, Fair-trade Fortnight and Easter Community cafés. We also serve Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar at these cafés.

Ran two school stalls at the Old Rayne Christmas Fair in the Lawrence Hall, one for Christmas Traidcraft products and the other sold Fairtrade Chocolate Brownie mix in jars and Fairtrade cookies and truffles that we made. They were very popular!

A man from a company called Koolskools gave us an assembly about Fairtrade cotton

We baked all helped make a Fairtrade cake and put it in a competition called The Fair Bake.

We recycled our Fairtrade wrappers to make a sculpture. We uploaded a photo of the sculpture to the Fairtrade Foundation website and we won 3rd prize.

We had a healthy Fairtrade tuck shop everyday in the hall for all the pupils and staff in the school

This evidence from the session was collated and submitted to the Fairtrade Foundation and last week the school heard news from the Foundation that Old Rayne School have retained its Fairtrade School status.

STEM Business Breakfast at Old Rayne

 On Friday 2nd November Old Rayne School held a science, technologies, engineering and maths business breakfast.

Both classes P1-3 and P4-7 are currently studying STEM projects and we set up the breakfast as a whole school enterprise, the upper stages class even worked with senior pupils from Meldrum Academy to help plan and set up learning stations for the event (the senior pupils then attended the breakfast with the depute from the academy.) We ran the business breakfast as an open morning with 15 expert stations set up around the school. Pupils, parents and staff circulated around the areas as the experts shared their specific expertise with us. It was also an opportunity for the pupils to display their work and show it to their parents and the invited experts. We had representation from to name just a few…

… and many many Dad’s of pupils who left their companies for the morning to attend as an engineering expert.

It was a super event and the pupils got so much out of it from start to finish. We have invited a few experts back in to school to share more with us about their jobs as the pupils found them very interesting and want to find out more. We perhaps inspired a few more engineers of the future!

The Inverurie Herald and Inverurie Advertiser attended to take photos and do a wee write up that was in last week’s papers.

Udny Green School

Udny Green Eco Fun Day

Our Eco Fun Day On 25th April 2012, we joined 11 other schools for an ECO fun day at Haddo Estate. On arrival we all congregated in the theatre to discuss the day’s schedule. Our first activity was building bird houses which was a fun challenge. Our next activity was a tour of Haddo House which we thoroughly enjoyed. We especially liked the paintings, finding the secret passage, the library and all the history connected to the house. After lunch we planted Hawthorn and Rowan trees behind the Pheasantry. We discovered that making a T-cut to plant trees was very effective. Unfortunately we were only able to plant two trees per school. We finished the day by becoming Nature Detectives. We had to find and solve clues to a crime that had taken place. A stoat had knocked over a blue-tit nest box and eaten the eggs. We all greatly enjoyed our day out and would gladly do it all again. Thank you very much to everyone who helped organise the day.
