Literacy Intervention

Despite the best efforts of all involved, some of the children do come to secondary with reading scores which do not match their age and stage. Pupils may also struggle with spelling, grammar and handwriting. Obviously such challenges will have a serious impact on the pupil’s progress but it can also drive disruptive behaviour as the child is anxious, frustrated and angry at not being to make sense of the work in front of them.

To this end, a number of staff have recently attended an intensive two-day course on the fantastic Fresh Start programme. The Read Write Inc. Fresh Start is a successful intervention programme developed by Ruth Miskin to rescue pupils age 9 and above who are below age-related expectations.  The English department at Montrose Academy has invested in the entire set Fresh Start resources, we just needed the training which myself and Mrs Stewart have now received. Two members of staff from our SFL faculty also attended the course.

The next steps for us are now to look at which pupils need the programme. This will be determined through looking at the reading ages of our S1-3 pupils as well as the new P7 intake. The performance of pupils who read at age 9 and below will then be closely examined, looking at previous and current work across English. Once the Reading Leaders have this comprehensive data, we will look to meet with the parents of the pupils identified in order to fully explain what the programme will entail. Such communication is vital if we are to have your support in improving your child’s literacy. Currently,  course will be delivered between the SFL and English faculties. However I would hope to offer colleagues from other subjects the chance to become involved once the programme is established.
