Literacy at Montrose Academy.

The Library:

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
Jorge Luis Borges

The English department have a library liaison officer which is Miss Ross. Our library is a wonderful place, with many excellent books and is ran by a dedicated and knowledgeable staff. It is hoped that we will be able to work more closely with the library this coming session. It would be fantastic if we can run at least two competitions for reading; a BGE one whereby the younger pupils are presented with reading ‘medals’. We also aim to offer a senior reading competition, using a selection of books from ‘The Times’ 100 books to read list. We already have a Kindle Fire for the top prize thanks to the generosity of McDonald’s Arbroath and we have other local businesses on board, to support literacy in our young people.

21st of May

Literacy Working Group:

The group met tonight to discuss a number of key points which are as follows:

  1. Mrs Webster  to share new literacy blog with group
  2. National Literacy Trust
  3. Use of NLT audit in Montrose Academy.
  4. National Literacy Survey.
  5. AOCB

The group was attended by Mrs Smith, Mr Fox, Mrs Peal, Mrs Robertson (SFL) and Mrs McKenzie. The chair was Mrs Webster.

There was plenty of productive discussion around Literacy both here at MA and on a national level. We agreed that if we could use the Literacy Trust audit for our young people, it would not only give a realistic picture of Literacy here but would also offer information which could then be used for developing our Literacy policy.

The group have looked at the first stage of the Literacy Trust Survey, the results of which will go towards the policy also.
