{"id":16,"date":"2016-09-03T15:09:05","date_gmt":"2016-09-03T15:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/an\/digitallearningprototype\/?p=16"},"modified":"2016-09-03T15:51:58","modified_gmt":"2016-09-03T15:51:58","slug":"bocsh-talking-about-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/an\/digitallearningprototype\/2016\/09\/03\/bocsh-talking-about-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"BOCSH Talking about learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday I had a pleasure of attending the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BOCSH_Scot\">BOCSH<\/a> talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/bocshconference2016\/\">learning conference<\/a> at St. Andrew&#8217;s RC School, Glasgow.\u00a0\u00a0The workshops run by <a href=\"https:\/\/bocsh-group.co.uk\/\">BOCSH <\/a>(<span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Building Our Curriculum Self-Help) and SCEL I attended were all on digital learning.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first one by Sheena Boyle (MFL), Sandra Convery (English)\u00a0and Lewis Hamilton (Physics) of Balfron High School.\u00a0 Sheena started with it&#8217;s not about the technology it&#8217;s about the learning.\u00a0 The technology provides feedback, choice, autonomy, independence and encourages a can do more attitude.\u00a0 Tablets can reduce barriers are helpful for low confidence pupils or those with ASN.\u00a0 iPads are used in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/balfronhigh\">Balfron High School <\/a>and a number of apps were mentioned:<\/p>\n<p>Flash card app, Padlet, Sticky notes, Mindmap apps, Showbie, Explain Everything.<\/p>\n<p>Sandra shared using technology for recording feedback for pupils.\u00a0 Voice recording and annotation means pupils less likely to forget feedback and saves time compared to all writing or chat with each pupil.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"474\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Technology for English feedback <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/balfronhigh?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@balfronhigh<\/a> recording voice feedback and annotating essay. Andrew Bailey \ud83e\udde1\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83c\udfeb (@andrewkbailey13) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andrewkbailey13\/status\/770923740876136448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 31, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>He has also used PowerPoint on Glow collaboratively within a lesson where different pupils worked on the same Mission to Mars task, divided into parts for each, leaving Earth, journey to Mars, Landing, What to find out.\u00a0 He reported the online collaboration meant pupils could see what the others in their group were doing at all times and we spurred on after seeing good work by others to improve their section.\u00a0 Upon returning to school I have discussed using O365 collaboratively with staff and shown them how to do this.<\/p>\n<p>The second workshop was by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrPaterson1\">Derek Paterson<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LarbertHigh\">Larbert High School<\/a>.\u00a0 He shared the development of Glow within his school and how\u00a0they had a digital learning week to promote digital learning and used Teach meets within school to share experiences across the school with sessions on Glow, Qwizdom, Edmodo, Class Dojo, Socrative and more.\u00a0 Back in school I have mentioned this Teach meet CPD model to the DHT&#8217;s as I think this would be a good way to collaborate and share experiences.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"474\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Technology for school improvement from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LarbertHigh?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LarbertHigh<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BOCSH_Scot?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BOCSH_Scot<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/digitallearning?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#digitallearning<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bocsh2016?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bocsh2016<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5rdBaUkOoe\">pic.twitter.com\/5rdBaUkOoe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Andrew Bailey \ud83e\udde1\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83c\udfeb (@andrewkbailey13) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andrewkbailey13\/status\/770937137273397248?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 31, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The thirds workshop was on Flipped Learning in Maths by Craig McDougall also at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LarbertHigh\">Larbert High School<\/a>.\u00a0 He described the journey of the maths department at Larbert High School into Flipped learning.\u00a0 In an ambitious use of flipped learning they created a YouTube channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCeJ1pRPUBkh5S5mzh5UvYfg\">Larbert Maths<\/a> and now have videos for the N5 Maths course and much of the Higher course.\u00a0 He stated the advantages of flipped learning as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A way to deal with the high volume of content at N5 level.<\/li>\n<li>Promoting pupil discussion and higher order thinking skills.<\/li>\n<li>Enhancing self evaluation of skills<\/li>\n<li>Enhanced differentiation of learning<\/li>\n<li>Good for absentees<\/li>\n<li>Good for cover<\/li>\n<li>Good for pupils with ASN needs<\/li>\n<li>Helps consistency of learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pupils need training on how to actively watch the videos, when, where and how to take notes from them.\u00a0 Lessons work better when what is done in class is more of a joint activity.<\/p>\n<p>Suggested have a question at the end of the video that pupils have to answer and bring into class.\u00a0 Pupils returning to class assessed themselves and started on the appropriate task, bronze (simple), silver (more complex) or gold (course exam level).\u00a0 Then move up to do the other tasks as they become more familiar.\u00a0 Can&#8217;t hide as they can with homework as learning is more visible.\u00a0 If unable to do it in class have to be strict and say what did you do with the video, watch again.\u00a0 Teachers can help clarify but shouldn&#8217;t explain everything otherwise no point to watch the videos.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of ideas to take from this session, short videos, include example and question at the end.\u00a0 Potentially more differentiation of task in class depending on pupil self assessment.<\/p>\n<p>The conference was\u00a0book ended\u00a0with a good introduction from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GL1718\">Gerry Lyon<\/a>\u00a0and a Teacher leadership or Teacher Teachership session from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fearghal_scel\">Fearghal Kelly<\/a> of SCEL and a reflective plenary.\u00a0 I have taken away lots of useful ideas and it was great to meet teachers and build networks to share ideas and practice.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"474\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Great having lunch with @StMungosComp <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BOCSH_Scot?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BOCSH_Scot<\/a> talking <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GlowScot?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GlowScot<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MIEExpert?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MIEExpert<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GlowScot?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GlowScot<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/digitallearning?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#digitallearning<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bocsh2016?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bocsh2016<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/claganach?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@claganach<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash;
