Democracy in Scotland and the UK:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In this unit you will study the following areas:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>constitutional arrangements\u00a0 ongoing debates<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>about the nature of the political system in the United Kingdom\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>representative democracy the the United Kingdom\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>the impact of voting systems and a range of factors which affect voting behaviour\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>the ways in which citizens are informed about, participate in, and influence the political process\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>implications of the UK\u2019s decision to leave the European Union (EU)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>2. Social Issues (Crime &amp; Law):<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In this unit you will explore the following issues:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>legal rights and responsibilities of UK citizens\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>causes and theories of crime\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>impact of crime on victims, offenders and their families<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>social and economic impact of crime on wider society<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>effectiveness of custodial and non-custodial responses to crime<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>3. International Issues:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This unit will focus on The USA as a major world power. You will examine the following areas:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>the American political system\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>recent socio-economic issues<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>the effectiveness of the government in tackling socio-economic issues<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>\u00a0\u00a0the role played by The USA in international relations\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There is also an opportunity for you to personalise your learning by carrying out a piece of independent research into a contemporary issue of your own choice. This independent research will form the basis of the Higher Assignment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Assessment:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Assignment \u2013 This is a piece of independent coursework (an extended report). Your assignment is externally assessed and counts towards your overall grade. It is worth 30 marks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Question paper \u2013 This is the final exam at the end of the course. It consists of two papers. Paper 1 requires candidates to answer a series of extended responses on each of the three units (see above). It is 1 hour 45 minutes and is worth 52 marks. Paper 2 assesses a candidate\u2019s skills in handling sources.
